I don't have any bad debt but I still get calls from this company.  I don't know how to stop it so I don't answer (and they aren't very helpful if you do answer).

These idiots keep asking for some other turd that I dont even know. I tell them I am not the person they are looking for and don't know them. Today they openedly called me a liar and I am hiding my identity from them. I told them to I would place a law suit if it continues only to have them call more frequently. I was better off not answering, seemed like once they knew they got a live body their protocol is to increase call volume to your number. I really believe its harassment.

It is harrasment and you can ask for their address so you can send a "Cease and Disist" letter to them. Then they legally have to stop or risk a lawsuit.

Started calling one year ago. If you have caller ID do not answer. They are a collection agency and will harass you repeatedly. They use different numbers and locations throughout the US. Block their number. When they can't get through on one number, they have another area code and phone number they are able to use.

Though Portfolio Recovery has been calling due to my name being similar to someone they are looking for (in a different State!), I have been told by an attorney that there is not a damn thing the National Do Not Call Registry can do.

In fact, Federal Laws (and State Laws crafted around the Federal Laws), many crafted in Washington by our representatives over the past 12 years, virtually gives these companies an unfettered playground to operate. Many will receive "a fine" for unethical and illegal practices, but the penalties imposed are but a small swat on the butt compared to the profits being gleaned from these practices. One best things that companies like Portfolio Recovery respond to is legitimate and well crafted civil suits against them that produces punitive damages.

Just got a call from them. No message left. I don't even have any debts that are in collection. Why are they calling?

"Cecil Broadway" above, seems to be correct. These vermin started calling years ago, apparently for a credit card account closed and written off in 1997. They must have paid all of $50 to obtain this particular line on a computer print-out. They have NO way of verifying this debt. They have been contacted by the state Attorney General's office, and compelled to identify themselves in the caller ID. These pond scum have, according to some lawyer who works for them, decided to "cease collection efforts" on this debt, and sent the IRS a fraudulent 1099-C, in the amount of nearly $5000. AND then, did the a*holes stop calling? No, they have continued to call for well over a year after that, and are still calling. This was call number 145 since they "decided to cease collection efforts." Must be a really competently run company. I would send a cease and desist letter, but really, they are sort of entertaining. NOTE: if you send them a certified letter with return receipt requested, they will not return the receipt. But of course, you will still have proof you sent it. Yes, the Best Congress Money Can Buy is serving its masters on Wall Street and the banking industry well, and your welfare is not a consideration. Get used to it.
