- Cameo| 3 repliesReceived a call from this number asking for my hubby. The gentlemen on the other end had what sounded like an Indian accent. Told me he was calling from the IRS. I do actually owe the IRS some money but have NEVER received a phone call from them and am currently working on resolution. He proceeded to tell me that unless I made a 10% payment today and payment arrangements for the future I would be hauled into criminal court, I would need a criminal attorney, my assets would be frozen and my business license would be revoked for 3 years. I didn't give him any info but called the guy representing me in a panic! He proceeded to tell me this was a scam and to ignore the call. The guy purporting to be from the IRS was hard core and was demanding payment in full (or 10% to stop proceedings). Once the panic subsided, and I received reassurance from my rep, I realized the IRS doesn't even take payments over the phone. You can only pay via EFTPS or thru one of their approved vendors. Did a little more research and found some additional info on this scam. Here's the link related to the scam and what to look for.

- NickiMy recently widowed aunt just recieved a call from these people claiming they are the irs. She loaded $800 onto a greendot credit card and was told she needed to get another $1200 by tomorrow or she would be arrested and her property would be siezed. Because she hasn't paid taxes for the last few years she fell for this scam. We are currently in the process of trying to get her money back and reporting them to the IRS phishing department. According to google the telephone number belongs to 01 Communications out of Cottonwood California.
- pattiCalled yesterday and then again this morning at 6:58 am. Called 3 times in a row and left garbled voice mail saying from IRS and must contact immediately. Same scenario as above and when I said my husband wasnt available he asked for my Social Security #. When I said I didn't give this info over phone, he hung up. This guy must be stopped before he preys on others.

- LH| 2 repliesThe Indian sounding man called himself "Robert Parker" and said he was calling on behalf of the IRS and even gave me an employee number, RPP1006372. He was very difficult to understand. We have some tax issues so I thought maybe it was legit but had doubts as usually everything is by mail. He said I should call the number back in 10 minutes as the man that could resolve this, "Michael Johnson" was on another call. He would not give me the year of the tax problem he was referring to (red flag) and said it was some kind of error on our part and we could resolve it by calling back to the number. This was yesterday. Early this morning he called back and was very aggressive asking if I had called back the number. I said no because I wanted to contact my accountant first. Which, by the way I did. He asked if I had an attorney, which I said no, and that since I did not call back yesterday they were coming after us with lawsuits and judgements and that I must call back in the next 10 minutes. I had felt this was possibly a scam when he called yesterday but did not have time to research the number. After this mornings aggressive call I called back the number he gave to see what would happen. It just clicked, no anwer or ringing. I googled and found this site. BTW, the tiger from the Indian zoo in the movie "Life of Pi" is named Robert Parker. LOL!

He told her she owed $6000 to the IRS, but could start paying in little payments to stop legal actions. She knows she owes no money, so she was immdietly suspicious. Just don't call back, he's desperate for money.
- patti| 1 replyThis #, according to link from someone above, belongs to a company called 01 Communications in Cottonwood CA. The one thing most of us have in common is that we have had some issues with IRS. Ours was several years ago but there must be something in IRS data base that this guy is able to tap. Scary.
- Tamianth replies to pattiNope, this isn't the only number with the IRS scam going on and some folks do not have any problems with them. Its just a scam..
- Washington State| 1 replyGot a call this morning, Saturday, from Mr. John Miller of the California IRS. Asked for my wife on tax matter. I told him this is Saturday and state offices are closed. He said this is a part time position. Asked for his email address, he gave me one that is not ending in .gov. I told him I will report him to the FBI. Oh yes, he does not sound like any John Miller I know.

- Jimmy| 2 repliesI got the call from same # 530-377-6497 calling from IRS and there is tax issues and should call immediately or i will be put to jail and when I ask his name and employee # he started using F word and threatened to kill me and then he hang up the phone.
- Alfalfa replies to Jimmy| 1 replyWASHINGTON — The Internal Revenue Service today warned consumers about a sophisticated phone scam targeting taxpayers, including recent immigrants, throughout the country.
Victims are told they owe money to the IRS and it must be paid promptly through a pre-loaded debit card or wire transfer. If the victim refuses to cooperate, they are then threatened with arrest, deportation or suspension of a business or driver’s license. In many cases, the caller becomes hostile and insulting.
“This scam has hit taxpayers in nearly every state in the country. We want to educate taxpayers so they can help protect themselves. Rest assured, we do not and will not ask for credit card numbers over the phone, nor request a pre-paid debit card or wire transfer,” says IRS Acting Commissioner Danny Werfel. “If someone unexpectedly calls claiming to be from the IRS and threatens police arrest, deportation or license revocation if you don’t pay immediately, that is a sign that it really isn’t the IRS calling.” Werfel noted that the first IRS contact with taxpayers on a tax issue is likely to occur via mail
Other characteristics of this scam include:
Scammers use fake names and IRS badge numbers. They generally use common names and surnames to identify themselves.
Scammers may be able to recite the last four digits of a victim’s Social Security Number.
Scammers spoof the IRS toll-free number on caller ID to make it appear that it’s the IRS calling.
Scammers sometimes send bogus IRS emails to some victims to support their bogus calls.
Victims hear background noise of other calls being conducted to mimic a call site.
After threatening victims with jail time or driver’s license revocation, scammers hang up and others soon call back pretending to be from the local police or DMV, and the caller ID supports their claim.
If you get a phone call from someone claiming to be from the IRS, here’s what you should do:
If you know you owe taxes or you think you might owe taxes, call the IRS at 1.800.829.1040. The IRS employees at that line can help you with a payment issue – if there really is such an issue.
If you know you don’t owe taxes or have no reason to think that you owe any taxes (for example, you’ve never received a bill or the caller made some bogus threats as described above), then call and report the incident to the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration at 1.800.366.4484.
If you’ve been targeted by this scam, you should also contact the Federal Trade Commission and use their “FTC Complaint Assistant” at FTC.gov. Please add "IRS Telephone Scam" to the comments of your complaint.
Taxpayers should be aware that there are other unrelated scams (such as a lottery sweepstakes) and solicitations (such as debt relief) that fraudulently claim to be from the IRS.
The IRS encourages taxpayers to be vigilant against phone and email scams that use the IRS as a lure. The IRS does not initiate contact with taxpayers by email to request personal or financial information. This includes any type of electronic communication, such as text messages and social media channels. The IRS also does not ask for PINs, passwords or similar confidential access information for credit card, bank or other financial accounts. Recipients should not open any attachments or click on any links contained in the message. Instead, forward the e-mail to phishing@irs.gov.
More information on how to report phishing scams involving the IRS is available on the genuine IRS website, IRS.gov.
http://www.irs.gov/uac/Newsroom/IRS-Warns-of-Pervasive-Telephone-Scam - sue| 1 replyI got 6 calls yesterday 11/24/13, from this number, 1-530-377-6497, and they left two messages saying that they are looking for my husband and we need to call this number immediately. Since the person's thick Indian accent, none of us could actually understand what the message was about. But this morning at 7:30 this guy called again, and only then I finally understood that he is calling from IRS. Once he is told that my husband is not available to talk, he wants him to call back this number and his name is Scott Watson. But for some reason as he is repeating this number the call got cut off. It did ring again, but no one speaks, so I hung up. He did say that he calls from California.

- MyTaxesArePaidInFullI received a call from 530-377-6497. I knew it was a scam because I have no tax arrears. I could tell the person on the phone was of Indian origin (I am an Indian myself). I calmly took down the information he gave me and told him I had no intention of following up on it. I think I confused him.
