- Concerned in CAReturned home late Sunday night and heard two vmm left on Saturday 1/25/2014. Naturally was quite concerned. The vmm both said the same thing. Had to listen to them several times as they are not easy to understand. The accent could be from any number of countries - not making assumptions about it being this country or that. Thought I would try to contact the IRS directly to see if they could simply route my call to that division. In the course of trying to find their # and googling the # came across this site. Yes -- was somewhat suspicious of the call and thought it sounded weird. But like most responsible people, was not going to ignore the msg. Was prepared to contact the IRS. At any rate, this morning Monday 1/27/2014, rec'd another msg on my landline. Note that the call back # was different in the Monday morning msg - though the msg itself is the same. Basically, the msgs were:
"This msg is intended for XX (my name). XX, the very second you receive this msg I need you. Or your written attorney of record to return the call. The issue at the hand is extremely time sensitive. My name is Roger Williams and I am calling you from Investigation Bureau of IRS. Internal Revenue Service Dept. And hotline to my division is 425-568-9101 (on Monday it was 530-422-6099). Don’t try to disregard this msg and do return the call as soon as possible before any legal allegations are expressed against you. So goodbye and take care."
Considering whether / how / to whom to report this. It was disconcerting. I know it would be very frightening for alot of people. Anyway, glad to find the information posted by others. Hopefully this post will help someone else also. Thx- Caller: IRS (purportedly)
- AZ Desert RatCall received twice on 1-27-14 to voice Mail. It was the exact same message as to Concerned in Ca. To report this scam made me realize just how big the Federal Government is. I started by calling the FBI and they referred me to the Feral Trade Commission. They had heard of this scam and that I needed to contact the Consumer Financial Protection. I called them and they said, i would need to file a formal compliant on line (Consumer Financial Protection. gov). With this process, the scammers are protected by our own bloated Federal Government.
- Caller: IRS??
- ConcernedReceived the same message (1/28/14) from 530-422-6099 as that received by "Concerned in CA". It was a relief to note that it was a scam we are being subjected to by someone speaking with a strong foreign accent (difficult to understand) and that IRS is aware of this scam.
Thanks for everyone posting to this stream.- Caller: Scam Inc!

- Elspeth replies to 01jan28This is a well known scam - more info here:
WASHINGTON — The Internal Revenue Service today warned consumers about a sophisticated phone scam targeting taxpayers, including recent immigrants, throughout the country.
Victims are told they owe money to the IRS and it must be paid promptly through a pre-loaded debit card or wire transfer. If the victim refuses to cooperate, they are then threatened with arrest, deportation or suspension of a business or driver’s license. In many cases, the caller becomes hostile and insulting.
“This scam has hit taxpayers in nearly every state in the country. We want to educate taxpayers so they can help protect themselves. Rest assured, we do not and will not ask for credit card numbers over the phone, nor request a pre-paid debit card or wire transfer,” says IRS Acting Commissioner Danny Werfel. “If someone unexpectedly calls claiming to be from the IRS and threatens police arrest, deportation or license revocation if you don’t pay immediately, that is a sign that it really isn’t the IRS calling.” Werfel noted that the first IRS contact with taxpayers on a tax issue is likely to occur via mail
Other characteristics of this scam include:
Scammers use fake names and IRS badge numbers. They generally use common names and surnames to identify themselves.
Scammers may be able to recite the last four digits of a victim’s Social Security Number.
Scammers spoof the IRS toll-free number on caller ID to make it appear that it’s the IRS calling.
Scammers sometimes send bogus IRS emails to some victims to support their bogus calls.
Victims hear background noise of other calls being conducted to mimic a call site.
After threatening victims with jail time or driver’s license revocation, scammers hang up and others soon call back pretending to be from the local police or DMV, and the caller ID supports their claim.
If you get a phone call from someone claiming to be from the IRS, here’s what you should do:
If you know you owe taxes or you think you might owe taxes, call the IRS at 1.800.829.1040. The IRS employees at that line can help you with a payment issue – if there really is such an issue.
If you know you don’t owe taxes or have no reason to think that you owe any taxes (for example, you’ve never received a bill or the caller made some bogus threats as described above), then call and report the incident to the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration at 1.800.366.4484.
If you’ve been targeted by this scam, you should also contact the Federal Trade Commission and use their “FTC Complaint Assistant” at FTC.gov. Please add "IRS Telephone Scam" to the comments of your complaint.
Taxpayers should be aware that there are other unrelated scams (such as a lottery sweepstakes) and solicitations (such as debt relief) that fraudulently claim to be from the IRS.
The IRS encourages taxpayers to be vigilant against phone and email scams that use the IRS as a lure. The IRS does not initiate contact with taxpayers by email to request personal or financial information. This includes any type of electronic communication, such as text messages and social media channels. The IRS also does not ask for PINs, passwords or similar confidential access information for credit card, bank or other financial accounts. Recipients should not open any attachments or click on any links contained in the message. Instead, forward the e-mail tophishing@irs.gov.
More information on how to report phishing scams involving the IRS is available on the genuine IRS website, IRS.gov.
You can reblog the IRS tax scam alert via Tumblr. - Miami ResidentI got a message from 530-422-6099 claimed to be Alex Shawser from Internal Revenue Service Department. Message is time sensitive stating that I need to call immediately before an illegal allegation takes place. There seems to be a deficiency in my IRS contact. I was alarmed and listened to the message several times. The caller seems to be British with hint of Indian accent. I had to searched the number right away to find out if that was IRS. The call came from Weimar DA, California, Placer County, zip code 95713. I will be reporting the call to FTC.gov and that you for your posts.
