An Indian man called 7:10am claiming to be James Cook from some division of the IRS. He said my info was wrong and he needed me to call another person named Dexter Cruise at ext 359. He gave a "case number", and when I asked for the address he said they are in Rochester, NY. He gave me a partial street address and refused to give the rest. Having worked in telemarketing in the past, I know the laws according to the Fair Debt Collection Act. When I told him he was committing a crime by calling me before 8:30am and that he is legally required to give me whatever information I request, he started to mumble. I asked for someone else that speaks English, and he said I have to go and hung up. When I got off the phone, my relative told me that they heard kids in the background when they initially picked up the phone. I did a google search and can't find anything about this number or the partial address. Just wanted to let people know.

We received a similar call and the caller used my wife's name from before she received US citizenship in the 1980's.  She has not used this name for over 25 years.  He said she has committed criminal activities.  I phoned the IRS about this and was told to share the information with an IRS legal investigation branch.  I am curious about how the caller got my wife's name from a quarter century ago.

You're welcome. I looked up info on the IRS website and it states to ask for the badge # of anyone that calls claiming to work for the IRS. Apparently every employee has one. Anyways, glad it helped.

From research I've gathered on the internet, they find the info about you from primarily 3 sources. When you change/open/close your banking info, take out/pay/or close a pay day loan/advance, or apply/pay off a loan or a credit card. Somehow they collect bits and pieces of info from these various sources, and then use it against you when they call.

The same Idian sounding guy left a message on my machine also. The sound quality was really bad. Sounds like a internet phone (VOIP) with slow internet speeds. That is probably how they can get away with saying that they are the IRS and are not afraid of getting caught.

A man with a heavy Indian accent called 10 times within 15 minutes and left several messages claiming to be from the IRS.  The caller ID showed a number in Reno, NV, while his messages listed this number to call him back, so he is spoofing his caller ID.  Not surprising for a criminal fraudster.

Caller claiming to be an IRS agent. Thick Indian accent. Tells me to call "Officer Dexter Cruz at the same phone number from which I received the call 585-310-3285. The accent on "Officer" Dexter Cruz's voicemail sounds exactly like the original caller. No answer. Was told I had a "deficiency on my last income tax return." This isn't the correct wording an IRS agent would use nor the correct wording an accountant would use, it is not an IRS agent calling. Do not give them any information and hang up.

At 12:54 of 1/31/14, this Indian accent man left a message on my voice mail saying his name being Jacob Wallace from IRS and there was "deficiency" on my tax return.  I happen to know IRS doesn't do business by leaving a voice message.  He left a return phone as 585-310-3285 (also on the caller ID log). I googled the number and found this discussion.  Since I have the voice mail, I am thinking about sending the recording to FBI. Reading the messages here, looks like he is calling a lot of people.

He just called me today (1/31/14)! He called around 4:00 by the name of Alex Marty. His voice was very mumbled and said if I don't return his call there could be possible legal actions against me. Normally the IRS doesn't call, they send letters so I know this guys a fake, plus he didn't speak good english and it was really muffled. Has anyone tried to call them back?????

I have been receiving calls from 5853103285, claiming that he is from IRS. He has asked me to call the investigating officer Dexter Cruz at the number above. When I call back I heard people talking in Hindi in the background and they hung up. I received a call from him again and when I told him that I have checked out with IRS and there wasn't a Dexter Cruz there, he said he is going to send a Police Officer to my house.
Is there a way to report this to IRS?

WASHINGTON — The Internal Revenue Service today warned consumers about a sophisticated phone scam targeting taxpayers, including recent immigrants, throughout the country.

Victims are told they owe money to the IRS and it must be paid promptly through a pre-loaded debit card or wire transfer. If the victim refuses to cooperate, they are then threatened with arrest, deportation or suspension of a business or driver’s license. In many cases, the caller becomes hostile and insulting.

“This scam has hit taxpayers in nearly every state in the country.  We want to educate taxpayers so they can help protect themselves.  Rest assured, we do not and will not ask for credit card numbers over the phone, nor request a pre-paid debit card or wire transfer,” says IRS Acting Commissioner Danny Werfel. “If someone unexpectedly calls claiming to be from the IRS and threatens police arrest, deportation or license revocation if you don’t pay immediately, that is a sign that it really isn’t the IRS calling.” Werfel noted that the first IRS contact with taxpayers on a tax issue is likely to occur via mail
Other characteristics of this scam include:
Scammers use fake names and IRS badge numbers. They generally use common names and surnames to identify themselves.
Scammers may be able to recite the last four digits of a victim’s Social Security Number.
Scammers spoof the IRS toll-free number on caller ID to make it appear that it’s the IRS calling.
Scammers sometimes send bogus IRS emails to some victims to support their bogus calls.
Victims hear background noise of other calls being conducted to mimic a call site.
After threatening victims with jail time or driver’s license revocation, scammers hang up and others soon call back pretending to be from the local police or DMV, and the caller ID supports their claim.
If you get a phone call from someone claiming to be from the IRS, here’s what you should do:
If you know you owe taxes or you think you might owe taxes, call the IRS at 1.800.829.1040. The IRS employees at that line can help you with a payment issue – if there really is such an issue.
If you know you don’t owe taxes or have no reason to think that you owe any taxes (for example, you’ve never received a bill or the caller made some bogus threats as described above), then call and report the incident to the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration at 1.800.366.4484.
If you’ve been targeted by this scam, you should also contact the Federal Trade Commission and use their “FTC Complaint Assistant” at FTC.gov.  Please add "IRS Telephone Scam" to the comments of your complaint.
Taxpayers should be aware that there are other unrelated scams (such as a lottery sweepstakes) and solicitations (such as debt relief) that fraudulently claim to be from the IRS.
The IRS encourages taxpayers to be vigilant against phone and email scams that use the IRS as a lure. The IRS does not initiate contact with taxpayers by email to request personal or financial information.  This includes any type of electronic communication, such as text messages and social media channels. The IRS also does not ask for PINs, passwords or similar confidential access information for credit card, bank or other financial accounts. Recipients should not open any attachments or click on any links contained in the message. Instead, forward the e-mail to phishing@irs.gov.

More information on how to report phishing scams involving the IRS is available on the genuine IRS website, IRS.gov.
