These are criminal extortionists operating in overseas boiler rooms using VOIP to alter their identities and locations and out of the reach of US law enforcement.

If someone calls saying he's an IRS agent and demands that you send money immediately, hang up.
It's a phone scam.In fact, it tops the IRS "Dirty Dozen" list of tax scams this year, and it's been surging in recent months, the agency said Thursday.

The Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration (TIGTA), which oversees the IRS, has received reports of 290,000 scam calls since October 2013 and said nearly 3,000 victims have been swindled out of $14 million so far.

By altering their caller ID number to make it look like they're calling from an IRS office, these scammers often threaten vulnerable people like the elderly and new immigrants with things like arrest, deportation or the loss of their driver's license if they don't pay immediately for money purportedly owed.

Often leaving messages that say it's "urgent" you call them back, the scammers use common names and sometimes say they are from the IRS Criminal Division. They may even claim to know the last four digits of your Social Security number and send follow-up emails that appear to be from the IRS, TIGTA said.

They often demand that payments be made by prepaid debit card.

Once they make their threats, the scammers have been known to call back and again disguise their caller ID so it appears they are calling from the police department or the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV).

Or sometimes when they call, they may say you have a refund due and ask you to provide personal information so you can claim it.

The real IRS will usually contact you by regular mail first, if it needs to contact you at all. And the agency never demands immediate payment by phone or asks for credit card or debit numbers if they do call. It also never asks for personal or financial information by email, text or social media.

Got this recorded call this morning - also starting off with 'don't hang up and ignore this message - otherwise they will be forced to take legal action.  'Supposed' IRS agent's name if Nicky Johnson. Believe this may be part of IRS scam reported by CBS New York news on 3/5/15 - am obviously NOT calling her or her department back.

I also got a robo voice from Irs Officer Nicki Johnson that either my attorney or I need to return the call before the IRS takes action against me.

I just got a robocall with a prerecorded computer generated voice saying they were Nicky Johnson of the IRS and said don't ignore this call and that they would take legal action and to have me or my attorney call them back at 585 431 1222.  I assumed it was a scam but I was vaguely intrigued how this does this and called back.  The number was busy.  I called back again and it rang once but then moved on to being busy again.  definitely a scam.  I thought, this stuff should be illegal and I'm sure it is, but they can't catch everyone.  awful -- particularly for people who are more vulnerable.

I received a robotic voice message saying "time sensitive.. I am officer Nikki Johnson from Internal Revenue Service and the hotline from my Division is 585-431-1222."  I repeat 585-431-1222. "Don't disregard this message and do return this call before we take any action against you."

Received this call from supposed IRS agent Nicky Johnson (automated) saying it was urgent and to call her right back. Threatened legal action if we we didn't reply immediately. Also received another call similar to this a couple months ago.

Do consider getting a call blocking device or phone.. You can google them and many are around $50.00 or so.If its a cell phone, some already have call blocking, if not, there are free apps on the web that will work for some. You can google this. If you have a smart phone, there is a free app called call control. Iphones appear to have apps also. Another one is called Mr. Number.

Call while at work and left message that I should call back before legal action is taken against me, they have an attorney to handle this case..says its the Internal Revenue Service ......Scammers

Received a scam call from this number impersonating the IRS.  You can report this to the IRS at :

Person stated they were uploading information with the courts in an hour and that I they will be issuing an arrest warrant. I can be facing jail time. They knew exactly how much I owed and said that they would stop the arrest warrant if I called in 45 minutes and gave them 1,000. dollars. First they asked me how much I had on me and said the minimum they would take is 1,000.

I received another call with the man threatening me and saying he knows that I posted on the 800 notes, asking why I did that, cursing and threatening.
