- TomRecorded message supposedly from the IRS stating I needed to call back immediately, otherwise action will be taken against me. I did a reverse number look up and found out it was from a landline in Henrietta, NY.
- Caller: YMax Communications Corp
- Call type: Debt collector
- Corey| 2 repliesFraudulent IRS call!
- Sue replies to Corey| 1 replyCory, thanks for posting. These scammers convince elderly people that they owe money to the IRS and manage to convince them to pay thousands of dollars by activating gift cards and giving them the info. Please pass this info along, no Government agency will EVER call you and expect you to pay them over the phone!!!
- Trask replies to SueJust got the call. Caller had very heavy perhaps Indian accent. Told me all the things that would happen to me (including jail) then asked me if I had any questions. I said nope you explained it all very well. He said "you don't have any questions?" again I said "no". He said "then said get ready to go to jail." I said "I will." I call back later and say "hey I haven't been arrested yet, are you sure you have the right address?"
- GdubI just received this fake IRS call also. This is the 4th time now I've received it. Once from 202-241-8602 then 202-241-8722 and then 925-221-2399. The recorded message was the same each time. They spoof a number and dial via an IP system like Vonage.
- Eeriee| 1 replyGot 3 voicemails each day saying the same thing from IRS. The callback numbers are:
585-444-7122
585-444-7123
585-444-7129
Here's the VM:
Record to return the call, the issue at hand is extremely time sensitive, I am ... from IRS, and the hotline for my jurisdiction is: (the numbers above) don't disregard this message and do return the call before we take any action against you. Good by and take care.
I called back and ask who the caller is, he just hung up. Probably the same guy, he has a deep Indian accent. - Anita| 1 replyI also got the call but from Julie Smith @ 585-444-7129 who left a threatening voice message for me to call to prevent legal action. I returned the xall and a male with heavy Indian accent said his name was David Miller. Whats the chance of that?! He wouldnt tell me he was with IRS till after I gave my name and number since my phone number was blocked and told me I had to immediately call back from a phone without a blocked number. I explained I was not near an unblocked phone and he insisted I unblock my number and xall back. Again I explained I could not do that for 30-40minutes. He started to give me another number to call him on and would not text it to me when I said I did not have pen or paper with me. He wanted the number I would be calling from which I gave him. When I called back I got a voice message saying to leave a message but before I could another message came on saying the message system was full and to call back later.
- Caller: allegedly the IRS
- Alfalfa replies to AnitaWASHINGTON — The Internal Revenue Service today warned consumers about a sophisticated phone scam targeting taxpayers, including recent immigrants, throughout the country.
Victims are told they owe money to the IRS and it must be paid promptly through a pre-loaded debit card or wire transfer. If the victim refuses to cooperate, they are then threatened with arrest, deportation or suspension of a business or driver’s license. In many cases, the caller becomes hostile and insulting.
“This scam has hit taxpayers in nearly every state in the country. We want to educate taxpayers so they can help protect themselves. Rest assured, we do not and will not ask for credit card numbers over the phone, nor request a pre-paid debit card or wire transfer,” says IRS Acting Commissioner Danny Werfel. “If someone unexpectedly calls claiming to be from the IRS and threatens police arrest, deportation or license revocation if you don’t pay immediately, that is a sign that it really isn’t the IRS calling.” Werfel noted that the first IRS contact with taxpayers on a tax issue is likely to occur via mail
Other characteristics of this scam include:
Scammers use fake names and IRS badge numbers. They generally use common names and surnames to identify themselves.
Scammers may be able to recite the last four digits of a victim’s Social Security Number.
Scammers spoof the IRS toll-free number on caller ID to make it appear that it’s the IRS calling.
Scammers sometimes send bogus IRS emails to some victims to support their bogus calls.
Victims hear background noise of other calls being conducted to mimic a call site.
After threatening victims with jail time or driver’s license revocation, scammers hang up and others soon call back pretending to be from the local police or DMV, and the caller ID supports their claim.
If you get a phone call from someone claiming to be from the IRS, here’s what you should do:
If you know you owe taxes or you think you might owe taxes, call the IRS at 1.800.829.1040. The IRS employees at that line can help you with a payment issue – if there really is such an issue.
If you know you don’t owe taxes or have no reason to think that you owe any taxes (for example, you’ve never received a bill or the caller made some bogus threats as described above), then call and report the incident to the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration at 1.800.366.4484.
If you’ve been targeted by this scam, you should also contact the Federal Trade Commission and use their “FTC Complaint Assistant” at FTC.gov. Please add "IRS Telephone Scam" to the comments of your complaint.
Taxpayers should be aware that there are other unrelated scams (such as a lottery sweepstakes) and solicitations (such as debt relief) that fraudulently claim to be from the IRS.
The IRS encourages taxpayers to be vigilant against phone and email scams that use the IRS as a lure. The IRS does not initiate contact with taxpayers by email to request personal or financial information. This includes any type of electronic communication, such as text messages and social media channels. The IRS also does not ask for PINs, passwords or similar confidential access information for credit card, bank or other financial accounts. Recipients should not open any attachments or click on any links contained in the message. Instead, forward the e-mail to phishing@irs.gov.
More information on how to report phishing scams involving the IRS is available on the genuine IRS website, IRS.gov.

- Caller: IRS (supposedly)
- Call type: Debt collector
- Manda Field2 messages on my voicemail stating to return call asap due to repercussions. returned call & man with thick indian accent, I explained we were a business and he apologized for the wrong number. Than I googled this. Please find a way to stop this person from stealing from the naive.

- Bruce replies to tombs31I just got the exact same call. I am a CPA and the IRS NEVER calls to contact a taxpayer unless it is a follow-up call to an IRS official notice. I would love to get my hands on these scammers and see them go to jail in an outdoor prison in remote Alaska. Let them scam each other at that point.
- Jay replies to EerieeMy further investigation revealed that these are PAKISTANI ORIGIN young people/men who are perpetrating fraud to finance their ISLAMIC-JIHADI GOALS.
OBAMA ADMINISTRATION MUST UNLEASH CIA & FBI AFTER THESE SCOUNDRELS. HOW CAN THEY CARRY ON SUCH ACTIVITIES FROM AMERICAN SOIL.
I received call from 585-444-7122 and reported to local law enforcement in my city. I'm considering as a service to my beloved adopted country USA, THE SYMBOL OF FREEDOM FOR ALL HUMANITY, to pick up a piece of paper, pen & envelop with first class postage stamp to inform The President at White House, 1600 Pennsylvania Ave., Washington DC
Recipients of such calls may consider doing something about it. - lIZJust received a call from 585-444-7153. Caller ID listed "Henrietta, NY" as the caller. Caller did not ask for a person nor indicated who the call was for. Four adults live here. The message, in a very robotic voice, stated that the call was urgent, an emergency and claimed to be from the IRS. Apparently someone at my home number had 4 extremely serious violations for which the "IRS" was going to prosecute. Demanded that someone (who) return the call so we could avert serious legal action. Very threatening. Since everyone at the house has his/her taxes done by tax preparer, It is highly unlikely that anyone is in trouble with the IRS. Plus the IRS always sends a letter. Didn't call back....it's a scam but apparently it still alive and well, since some of these posts date from 2014.
