they left a message saying they were from the IRS Fraud dept and do not disregard it. I called the number using #33# so it blocks them from knowing my number. I immediately received an answering machine to leave a message. This is BOGUS as can be.

These are criminal extortionists operating in overseas boiler rooms using VOIP to alter their identities and locations and out of the reach of US law enforcement.

It's a phone scam.In fact, it tops the IRS "Dirty Dozen" list of tax scams this year, and it's been surging in recent months, the agency said Thursday.

The Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration (TIGTA), which oversees the IRS, has received reports of 290,000 scam calls since October 2013 and said nearly 3,000 victims have been swindled out of $14 million so far.

By altering their caller ID number to make it look like they're calling from an IRS office, these scammers often threaten vulnerable people like the elderly and new immigrants with things like arrest, deportation or the loss of their driver's license if they don't pay immediately for money purportedly owed.

Often leaving messages that say it's "urgent" you call them back, the scammers use common names and sometimes say they are from the IRS Criminal Division. They may even claim to know the last four digits of your Social Security number and send follow-up emails that appear to be from the IRS, TIGTA said.

They often demand that payments be made by prepaid debit card.

Once they make their threats, the scammers have been known to call back and again disguise their caller ID so it appears they are calling from the police department or the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV).

Or sometimes when they call, they may say you have a refund due and ask you to provide personal information so you can claim it.

The real IRS will usually contact you by regular mail first, if it needs to contact you at all. And the agency never demands immediate payment by phone or asks for credit card or debit numbers if they do call. It also never asks for personal or financial information by email, text or social media.

If you get what you suspect is a scam call, report it to TIGTA through its Web site or call 800-366-4484.

I recieved a recorded voice call from the number (585) 861-4106 claiming that it was an urgent message from the IRS. I attempted calling the number back over a dozen times and there seems to be either not answer or it goes to voicemail. I believe that this is a scam of some sort. I hope that there is someone out there who can put a stop to this.

I received a recorded voice call from the number (585) 861-4106 claiming that it was an urgent message from the IRS. I believe that this is a scam. The voice mail is automated. They make idol threats to take action against you if you don't call them back but they don't identify who they are calling for, so it is obviously a scam. Don't be a sucker and call them, because the IRS won't ever operate this way anyways. Contact your tax person if you think there is a  problem to rest your mind at ease...Besides who calls you with a threat then says " Have a nice day"...what a joke...

Called twice, 10:29 and 10:44.  No message left.

I received a call from this number at 11:57 AM and was left a message stating that "The issue at hand is extremely time sensitive. My Officer Julie Smith from Internal Revenue Service and the hotline to my division is 585-861-4106. I repeat it's 585-861-4106. Don't disregard this message and do return the call before we take any action against you. Goodbye and take care". This was an automated message. Total scam.

This is a scam! They claim to be the Internal Revenue Service. They tell you that you owe back taxes and that if you do not pay $1000 immediately the local sheriff department will come and arrest you and you will be charged with fraud in the government. Do not fall for this!! I called my sheriff's department and they already had many calls about this. They had me file a complaint against the number. Beware!!!

I got a voice mail today without even hearing the ring.  It says the same re urgent matter, gives this phone number, etc.  I googled it and found this site.  I'll not call them back for sure.

According to the ftc, this is a clear scam and should be reported.
