- John| 4 repliesAlso got a robo-call from this number about an hour ago, claiming to be IRS and left a name and number with an extension number to call before the IRS takes action against me. I have a simple tax return with no 'discrepencies' so should have no issues with the IRS, am on Social Security. Am on hold now waiting to double check with IRS and report this number. Beware if you get a call from this number, it's also listed as a robo-dialer scam caller on another site, so beware if you get this kind of call from this number.
- JohnGot a robo-call from this number claiming to be the IRS and to call a different number immediately before they take action against me. I can find no connection between this number and the IRS.

- Alfalfa replies to Lynese MillicanWASHINGTON — The Internal Revenue Service today warned consumers about a sophisticated phone scam targeting taxpayers, including recent immigrants, throughout the country.
Victims are told they owe money to the IRS and it must be paid promptly through a pre-loaded debit card or wire transfer. If the victim refuses to cooperate, they are then threatened with arrest, deportation or suspension of a business or driver’s license. In many cases, the caller becomes hostile and insulting.
“This scam has hit taxpayers in nearly every state in the country. We want to educate taxpayers so they can help protect themselves. Rest assured, we do not and will not ask for credit card numbers over the phone, nor request a pre-paid debit card or wire transfer,” says IRS Acting Commissioner Danny Werfel. “If someone unexpectedly calls claiming to be from the IRS and threatens police arrest, deportation or license revocation if you don’t pay immediately, that is a sign that it really isn’t the IRS calling.” Werfel noted that the first IRS contact with taxpayers on a tax issue is likely to occur via mail
Other characteristics of this scam include:
Scammers use fake names and IRS badge numbers. They generally use common names and surnames to identify themselves.
Scammers may be able to recite the last four digits of a victim’s Social Security Number.
Scammers spoof the IRS toll-free number on caller ID to make it appear that it’s the IRS calling.
Scammers sometimes send bogus IRS emails to some victims to support their bogus calls.
Victims hear background noise of other calls being conducted to mimic a call site.
After threatening victims with jail time or driver’s license revocation, scammers hang up and others soon call back pretending to be from the local police or DMV, and the caller ID supports their claim.
If you get a phone call from someone claiming to be from the IRS, here’s what you should do:
If you know you owe taxes or you think you might owe taxes, call the IRS at 1.800.829.1040. The IRS employees at that line can help you with a payment issue – if there really is such an issue.
If you know you don’t owe taxes or have no reason to think that you owe any taxes (for example, you’ve never received a bill or the caller made some bogus threats as described above), then call and report the incident to the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration at 1.800.366.4484.
If you’ve been targeted by this scam, you should also contact the Federal Trade Commission and use their “FTC Complaint Assistant” at FTC.gov. Please add "IRS Telephone Scam" to the comments of your complaint.
Taxpayers should be aware that there are other unrelated scams (such as a lottery sweepstakes) and solicitations (such as debt relief) that fraudulently claim to be from the IRS.
The IRS encourages taxpayers to be vigilant against phone and email scams that use the IRS as a lure. The IRS does not initiate contact with taxpayers by email to request personal or financial information. This includes any type of electronic communication, such as text messages and social media channels. The IRS also does not ask for PINs, passwords or similar confidential access information for credit card, bank or other financial accounts. Recipients should not open any attachments or click on any links contained in the message. Instead, forward the e-mail to phishing@irs.gov.
More information on how to report phishing scams involving the IRS is available on the genuine IRS website, IRS.gov.

Got a call today - a recorded message from the "IRS" telling me not to "disregard this important call" and to call them back at (585) 861-7881.I called back immediately. They identified themselves as "IRS" they wanted me to give them info. I refused. I wouldn't tell them my name. I said I was calling them back. I gave them my cell phone number. [They then knew my name. Must have had a reverse look up of unlisted numbers.] They asked if I was driving. Yes. They asked me to pull off the highway to answer their questions. I refused. I told them I didn't think they were the IRS and that they weren't going to get any info from me. He said that he didn't want to talk to me while I was driving. He asked me to call back. I said no.

The IRS never initiates a contact via phone.
They always send a snailmail first.

Actually, it's a magicJack, not an IRS office. Knowing that this is probably some cowardly would-be extortionist in another country that actually treats the scamming of Americans as just another job, use your judgement as to what to do. - Cindy EppsI have received 2 calls from the above number. I know it is bogus. First I got a call a month ago on my home phone from a different number but same group, and now I am getting them on my cellphone/work phone

Do you have any reference to document this report? If true, it would be the first instance I've heard of where a magicJack number was ported to a cell phone. Or they may have downloaded (and registered!) a magicJack application (they do exist) on their cell phone, or found a way to spoof the number given when they make a cell phone call -- which actually isn't difficult to do at all. - ElisabethI received a voicemail from 585-861-7881. Automated message from Officer Julia Smith left the message stating I needed to call back before IRS began taking legal action against me. Called back immediately and the line was busy. Called again and they said "Thank you for calling IRS how can I help you?" with a foreign accent. I hung up. Came here and found this info.

- MBReceived several calls from 585-861-7881 in the last 2 weeks. Missed all. Checked the area code, NY. Called the number but could not leave a message, box was full. Got a message on Monday, saying it was the IRS with the same info as all of the above except at the end they say "have a wonderful day". Dead give away. Got a call this morning, missed it, called them back, couldn't understand the guy, he said if I didn't speak English I should have someone else call for me and hung up. I called back, same guy, asked his name, Steve Mathews from IRS and a badge number.
He asked what I wanted, told him he called me what did he want. Said he wanted to [***] me, did I want to [***].
I hung up. Reported the number to the IRS scam department. You all should do the same.
