- z| 4 repliesA man claiming himself to be a financial representative from CIBC and asking about your postal code and date of birth.
- Burnaby replies to zI had the exact same thing just recently. I think this is a scam.
- bmcWe received a similar call this evening... I called CIBC afterwards to see if it was legitimate and it sounds as though they *do* have representatives calling and that they do request this information (in order to verify they're speaking with the actual cardholder). Still, I'm not about to give my date of birth to a perfect stranger!
What they were selling... something about a line of credit. - CoquitlamYes I got the same thing. I called CIBC about it, and they told me that because it was not a 1-888 number and because branches wouldn't still be open when I got that call (7 PM), it must be fraudulent.
- Gary| 2 repliesI get calls like this too and they come up on my call display as Unavailable but say they are from my bank. I call my bank and they say they have people calling to ask how you like the service. I told my bank they come up on my call display as Unavailable and this is no good. They said they understand and would ask them to make their name known.
- MattMany of the same details as above. He said he could offer me things that my regular rep could not. When they guy asked about my birthdate and postal code, I said, "You tell me what you have and I'll tell you if they're right." To that, he said, "You are unde no obligation to talk to me. Thank you for your time...."
I called CIBC. The rep I spoke with said that, if someone from CIBC had called, it would have been an 800 number. I gave him the number, and he could not find it in his system.
I just wonder where he got my name and phone number. - StephiWhen they called me, I ignored it, but called back the number and got a really weird busy signal, like a busy signal but faster.
- CoquitlamI've tried calling that number several times throughout the day, and I only get a busy signal. Chances are it's a fraudulent guy who leaves the phone off the hook to hide it. Report this to the RCMP, and they will refer you to a phone crime division to tell about it.
Also tell CIBC about this. CIBC obviously let our information get out there to someone, so they have responsibility to fix this. - Aaround 7 o'clock a woman called from the same number asking for my postal code and my DOB to review my acount by telephone banking system however i have never asked for telephone banking. Report this to the RCMP, it seems like a fraud.
- Burnaby 5 feb/08| 1 reply05/feb/08 around 7 o'clock a woman called from the same number asking for my postal code and my DOB to review my acount by telephone banking system however i have never asked for telephone banking. the weird part is that she knew my full name and she called me on my cell phone. i think someone at CIBC is giving away personal information. I emptyed my account and i'm closing too. and i'm going straight to RCMP.
- Same here replies to Burnaby 5 feb/08Got phone call from the number twice in the evening of Friday and the morning of Saturady. Insisting on asking my postal code and DOB. Strange, refuse his/her request.
- Vancouver, 13 Feb 2008| 1 replyHe said that he was from CIBC. He asked for my postal code and DOB.
Said that he had the information but need to confirm my identity.
He said that the information was readily available from city hall
but that he didn't know the details of how to get the information.
He said that he had some financial information that was beneficial
to me.- Call type: Telemarketer
- xtracer replies to Vancouver, 13 Feb 2008When someone calls asking for your DOB, this person is either a scammer or a tracer tracking you down because you owe money. Collection companies use tracers to track down debtors who skip, change phone numbers and addresses to avoid payment. When you call a financial company regarding your account, they will ask for your DOB for security purposes. If someone who claim that this person is calling from a financial institution and then asks for your DOB, BEWARE!! If the incoming call is blocked, do not answer it and let them leave a message. If there's a number showing on your caller ID but no announcement on where the call is coming from like CIBC or Royal Bank on the caller ID, then they are using a fake number. Trust me. I was one of them.
- CoquitlamTHIS IS DEFINITELY FRAUDULENT. I reported this to CIBC and they investigated, and they say yes it is fraud.
Make sure you report this to the RCMP Phone Busters. Their phone number is 1-888-495-8501. - VancouverReceived a phone call from the supposed CIBC Financial advisor (lady) this evening. Same details were asked for DOB and Postal Code. Had some limited account information to hand, most could of been taken from a found bank statement or other mail. Didn't leave me convinced that I was speaking with a qualified CIBC representative. Called CIBC and reported it who also tried to call the number back and got the busy signal. They are now following up and have flagged my account for any unauthorized activity.
- crappyI got a couple of calls from this number. For me it was Canadian Springs Water company's automated service stating that my next delivery is tomorrow.
- Caller: Canadian Springs Water
- Call type: Event reminder
- VancouverThis dude had HARSH east indian accent and wanted to talk to me regarding my mortgage. When I asked him who he was, all he said was he is from my bank's mortgage department. When I asked which bank I deal with, he just hung up.

- Jason replies to Gary| 1 replyI just got a phone call from "CIBC" a few minutes ago. I have noticed an anonimous 1-800 number on my call display several times and, finally, I was home to answer when they called.
After (reluctantly) agreeing to participate in a questionnaire/survey the guy said "We need you to please verify your postal code". After a moment of silence I replied "Well, what postal code to you have for me"? He got a little nervous and stumbled "Ah, well, we need you to tell us that"
Immediately I just knew I was being had and replied "Oooh no,thank you, bye bye" and hung up.
He was obviously phishing for information. What was to come next?..."We just need you now to verify your date of birth; your account number, and your pin code? Please, I wasn't born yesterday. Makes me very nervous that they've got my name and telehone number. How, I don't know, but there it is. These people are disgusting. - BobHas your name; asks if you would like to participate in a survey/questionaiire. Then, asks you to verify your postal code...but doesn't seem to know it when you ask what HE has for your postal code.
Nice try, loser.- Caller: CIBC
- Call type: Survey
- NickJust got a call from a man with an accent (possibly East-Indian or some type of Asian) asking for me by name, claimimg to be from CIBC.
He asked if I would like to participate in a survey or questionaire. I (reluctantly) agreed.
He then asked if I could please verify my postal code. I asked, "well, what do YOU have as my postal code and I'll verify if it's correct".
He became a little nervous as he replied "ah, well, we need you to tell us that".
I replied, "Oh no, thank you, bye bye, and hung-up.
I mean, come on, what was next..."now we just need you to verify your date of birth, social insurance number, bank account number and pin code?
This guy has been very peristent. He has called at least a dozen times while I was out or unable to answer. I always felt a little suspicious and seized the opportunity to find out what it was all about.
I plan on reporting this to RCMP Phone Busters (1-888-495-8501).- Caller: CIBC
