Rcvd this call a few days ago, approx. Oct. 17th.  Said that in March 2011 we had filled out a "ballot" or form of some sort, at a pharmacy or grocery store and that we had been selected for 5 prizes.  This is an old, old, approach, reported on many blogs for years!  Appears it's still going, but instead of from an 800 number or other toll-free, it is from an area code in south-central New York State.  Despite this, they guy calling claimed he was in Woodbridge, Ontario.  The organization he was calling from sounded very generic and very phony -- like, Ontario Centre, or something like that.  He had my name, but when I denied ever having filled out such a form, he asked if I was "sure".  I also mentioned there is more than 1 person with my name.  (True).  That was enough for him to apologize for bothering me (!!) and to say a polite "good-bye"!!  A lot different from the usual.
ATTN. WEBMASTER:  UNDER "CALL TYPE", WHAT DOES "SMS" MEAN?  PLEASE WRITE IT IN FULL.  THERE APPEARS TO BE NO CATEGORY TO COVER "PRIZEWINNER" TYPE OF CALL.
    • Caller: Something like Ontario Centre (phony?)

We just had a call from this number.  There was a pause when I answered & they named someone in our household and asked to speak to that person.  The person did not speak clear english and the whole thing sounded absurd when he said we had corrupt windows files that could crash our computer.  He said he needed to access our computer to fix this.  He named his company but I never heard of it before and I said we would have our in house tech support look into this claim.  I hung up.  Total scam - don't let anyone access your computer.

Got a call just now from 'John' who has a heavy Indian accent, claiming to be with some financial services company based in Bocca Raton, speciliazing in mortgage rate renegotiation with current mortgage lender.. I asked for details but he wanted to check whether I would qualifiy for this government sponsored program. He claimed he would be able to reduce my rate to 1, 2 or worst case 3%! I refused to give him one answer and I also refused to pay 1/3 of the fee upfront (500$). So he got mad at me and told me to go to hell twice before hanging up.
I tried to call this number back, but ended up with a fax machine.. clearly a scam attempt!
Does anyone know who is behind this number?

Got a call from Mr. Bell at this number, said he represented Microsoft, worked for Help PC Online based out of the UK and told me that my computer was sending him error messages through Microsoft's "Main Server".  When I asked him why I wasn't seeing these messages on the computer, he said, I can show you, go turn on your computer.
I started to ask him questions about his business, asked for his supervisor's name and phone number.  He gave me his super's name, but wasn't authorized to release his personal number.  He did offer his callback number, which I had on my call display.
I asked him about all the background noise, it sounded like a party going on, and he said I'm not the only person working in this office.
I told him that this is a scam and he said, so if your computer dies in the next 20 days, you admit right now that it's your fault, that I gave you a chance to fix it?  I said yes, then said he was the worst customer service agent I had ever dealt with...he said I was his worst customer.
    Total scam.

this number phoned our land line but when I answered there was no-one there. It was like a computer was calling and when a real person answers you get switched to a live person, but they weren't fast enough.

I received a call from 607-767-0057 at 9:46 PM, Edmonton time.  The male caller said his name was Kevin and that he was calling from Microsoft Windows.  I asked if he was aware that it was 9:46 PM and he said he was.  I told him it was unacceptable.  He said he was calling about a serious problem with my computer.  I asked for his last name - Smith.  I asked for an office number I could reach him at and he gave me 4 different numbers - 1) 1-201-114-2095, 2) 1-201-1395, 3) 1-201-113-9543.  I asked for the name of the company he worked for - Microsoft Windows.  I asked for his office address - New Jersey.  I asked for the full addres - Cherry Hill, New Jersey.  I asked for the street adress - he hung up!

I've had several of these calls, all from people calling from "Microsoft" about a problem with my computer (always remember too late that what I SHOULD say is that I don't have a computer).  My favourite names have been "Justin Bieber" and "David O'Brien" (I suspect that's a combination of David Letterman and Conan O'Brien).

My favourite tactic is to keep them on the phone wasting their time and long-distance minutes for as long as I can.  If you can't beat 'em, join 'em, in a way.

    Nice Try!!!
Got a call from this number claiming that my computer was infected and had downloaded errors from the internet (thick East Indian accent).  I played along with her and pretended to get the computer up and running so that she could "help me".  She then asked that I hold down the windows key and the letter "R" at the same time.  I asked what that would do.  We went back and forth a few times with her trying to get me to press those keys but not letting me know why.  Eventually I asked where she was calling from and she indicated Toronto...Although area code 607 isn't from Canada.  This conversation lasted for 8 minutes when I finally asked her what she would think if I told her I was a computer technician and that I thought she was full of s**t...She hung up before I could say another word.
