Received three telephone calls from ASI myself. Since I used to work for them before they shut down their USA offices and know what they really do, I thought I'd wisen you guys up as to how to handle the call. I can guarantee that they'll never call you again. They can't because you'll know what they want and they won't take a chance on screwing up the study with someone who can skew the results. These studies cost companies big bucks, you know.
Number one, ask them all sorts of questions --- they can't hang up until you do. Ask them where they're calling from, how the weather is, what kind of sports they like, do they have kids, do they enjoy their work and listen for all the evasion, so you can enjoy how hard it is for them to get you back on topic. It counts against them if they can't control the conversation. Believe me, the monitors will be listening, so enjoy yourself. Ask them if their conversation is being monitored and how they like their bosses and which ones are the pains to work for. Ask them practically anything that isn't obscene and they can't hang up unless a supervisor tells them that they can. And keep asking questions. It makes them nuts when people do that.
Number two, what they're really interested in is what you remember about the commercials, so if you decide to actually watch the DVD, be sure to take copious notes on the commercials. When the interviewer calls back the next day, use every single adjective that you can possibly think of to describe the commercials. See, they have to ask you what you mean when you use any descriptive term to describe practically anything in the commercials. They'll ask you "You said ____. What did you mean by that?", so keep giving them adjectives in those responses as well. They have to keep asking as long as the adjectives keep coming, so get a thesaurus out if necessary and load them up on any descriptive term you can think of. And when you've exhausted the list of commercials, ask them what they like to eat or what kind of magazines you like.
Number three, speak as fast as you can. They're typing everything you say verbatim, so go fast as you can when you respond. They'll try to slow you down, but if they can't keep up, the monitor will have them end the call.
And when it's all over, let them know that you knew what they wanted were all the details of the commercials, so you made sure that they got all the information they wanted by taking copious notes. Believe me, they'll NEVER bother you again.
