Wanted to know if I had a security system

This was strange.  A woman (description, Spanish accent) sounded caught offguard when I answered, and knew my name.  She said she was calling "from ADP".  I figured she was a telemarketer trying to sell me a security system (which we already have, and have had for several years); so I explained that we already have a security system in our home.  She sounded confused for a moment and said, "Oh yes, that's right, ma'am, I see from our records here that you have been a customer of ours for 3 years."  And I said, "Uh, NO, as a matter of fact, we are a customer of a ~different~ brand of security system -- not ADP."  "Oh!  My mistake," she said, apologizing.  I said, "No problem.  But, how is it that your records indicate that we are a customer of ~ADP!~?!"  She apologized again, saying that she had looked at her records wrong, and that she had misread it.  It sounded lame.  I wondered whether she was hired by would-be thieves, trying to find out who has (and doesn't have) a security system.  I was a little suspicious.  If anyone else has a similar experience, please share it here.

I got the same strange call as the previous poster. "Our records indicate you have an ADP security system for the past 3 years".  Totally bogus.

Don't waste your breath or engage in that far of a conversation. Requesting that often brings rude, crude responses and they don't understand that. Hit them harder by completely ignoring mystery numbers. If they're calling people and getting no kind of answer, they've got nobody to toy with.

Spanish accident. Wanting to sell home security. At first they said they were from time warner cable.  They knew our name. That will make me sleep with my finger very near the trigger.

I strongly suspect calls from bogus businesses about security systems  could be someone trying to find out if your house is protected,   with perhaps unsavory intentions.
I normally tell them my heavy weaponry,  pit bulls,  and the crazy old crippled man who stays here 24/7 is all the security I need.

More along the lines of getting personal and possibly financial information from you. If you're tricked, they now have a name, address, phone number, and maybe a credit card or checking account number. They can now resell that so other scammers have your personal information on hand when they call. These "security systems" will always have a catch, too, like a fee.

Got the same information. I called back and stated that I did not want them to call again. They have since called at least 4 more times.

Sounded like they were on a speaker phone or cheap cell phone. Ask how I was, I believe she gave the name Susanne, had a accent. When she mentioned having a security system with ADP I hung up. I called the number back it rang then went to voice mail which stated was full.

I am glad I did not answer this, especially after reading the comments here. No message left and no caller ID identifier on my landline number. Called after 7pm.

Got a call from someone who said she was from ADP if I understood it correctly - the thing is, the security outfit is ADT - ADP is a respected computer payroll outfit.  I called ADT and the sales person said they were not engaged in this sort of direct phone campaign.  I suspect, as others, they have used a phone book to try and scam folks - I really doubt ADT would do this with people who can barely speak english, using some kind of internet or spoofing device to make teh call look local.

yes, ADP or ADT, can't remember.  This person sounded Middle Eastern.  There was a security system in this house before we moved in 15 years ago. Problem is they knew my name.  It was never in my name.  How did they know my name and the fact that there was a security system here before.  Except they indicated it was active and that I was paying too much, and someone would stop by to discuss new pricing with me.  What is that about.  I told them we were very safe with two protection dogs, the Fire Hall across the street and the current security system.  Oh, but he wanted to give me a new price, a better deal.  I guess I talked too much.

How did they know your name?  Anyone can find that out in about 2 seconds by entering your address or phone number.  They probably guessed on the alarm installation.  Safe bet in that a lot of people have them.  Or maybe it was listed on the sales listing before you bought the house.  Nothing magical about this, they are simply scammers who do their homework to try to make themselves look more legitimate.
