A decade-old scandal has stuck with Schuerger. In 2001, while serving as Ohio State’s Undergraduate Student Government president, his administration was accused of misspending money on a fancy dinner at Mitchell’s Steakhouse. Schuerger was forced to resign—at age 21—when members of his cabinet reportedly destroyed copies of the Lantern that detailed the expenditures.
And while the incident could easily be chalked up to youthful indiscretion, Schuerger’s name showed up in news articles earlier this month, alleging that he was the recipient of an illegal 2004 campaign loan from Youngstown developer John Cafaro, the father of state Sen. Capri Cafaro. Cafaro was charged by federal prosecutors in relation to that scandal, but Schuerger, then a campaign staffer for Capri Cafaro, was not.
Schuerger contends that it was John Cafaro’s error, not his.
