    Called me.  I didn't recognize the area code, so I didn't answer.  They left a voice message saying something to the effect that action has been taken against my account;  some suspicious activity has been associated with my SSN.  I have no idea what account they are referencing,  but they did use my name.  The number is from the Boston area.  Beware.

    scared the poo out of me.  I called the original company I "owed" money to, and they gave me several numbers and names.  after getting to the right person, they closed the account as of today, so this wouldn't continue.

    this is a scam.  I tried getting an address, but they wouldn't give me that. the people working there are Karen Carol, Tony Robertson and Audrey.  so be careful....

    The Federal Trade Commission (FTC), the nation's consumer protection agency, is warning consumers to be on the alert for scam artists posing as debt collectors. It may be hard to tell the difference between a legitimate debt collector and a fake one. Sometimes a fake collector may even have some of your personal information, like a bank account number. A caller may be a fake debt collector if he:

    •is seeking payment on a debt for a loan you do not recognize;
    •refuses to give you a mailing address or phone number;
    •asks you for personal financial or sensitive information; or
    •exerts high pressure to try to scare you into paying, such as threatening to have you arrested or to report you to a law enforcement agency.

    If you think that a caller may be a fake debt collector:

    •Ask the caller for his name, company, street address, and telephone number. Tell the caller that you refuse to discuss any debt until you get a written "validation notice." The notice must include the amount of the debt, the name of the creditor you owe, and your rights under the federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act.
    If a caller refuses to give you all of this information, do not pay! Paying a fake debt collector will not always make them go away. They may make up another debt to try to get more money from you.•Stop speaking with the caller. If you have the caller's address, send a letter demanding that the caller stop contacting you, and keep a copy for your files. By law, real debt collectors must stop calling you if you ask them to in writing.
    •Do not give the caller personal financial or other sensitive information. Never give out or confirm personal financial or other sensitive information like your bank account, credit card, or Social Security number unless you know whom you're dealing with. Scam artists, like fake debt collectors, can use your information to commit identity theft – charging your existing credit cards, opening new credit card, checking, or savings accounts, writing fraudulent checks, or taking out loans in your name.
    •Contact your creditor. If the debt is legitimate – but you think the collector may not be – contact your creditor about the calls. Share the information you have about the suspicious calls and find out who, if anyone, the creditor has authorized to collect the debt.
    •Report the call. Contact the FTC and your state Attorney General's office with information about suspicious callers. Many states have their own debt collection laws in addition to the federal FDCPA. Your Attorney General's office can help you determine your rights under your state's law.

    I was left both a very LEGAL Sounding message and a callback from (617) 939-0120 that my SSN had been used in fraudulent activity and that if I did not answer immediately, I would be summoned to appear in court.  It is all recorded messages and it appears to be a scam.

    Chris:

    Usually these types of calls are around payday loans.  If you never took one out, then worry pas your head..it's done... they can't touch you.  If you did take out a payday loan, what they're probably trying to do is convince you that you wrote a check to your creditor and it bounced.  Now I know that in some extreme cases, banks will turn over a bounced check to a collection agency but only after they try to reconcile it with you first.

    The other scenario is that these criminals want to convince you that you took out a pay day loan and defaulted on it.  Well here's the thing, you can't go to jail for a payday loan (although anyone who takes one out is nucking futs).  And if you did take out a payday loan, chances are that they are either illegal in your state OR the company trying to "collect" is a boiler room outfit somewhere off the coast of YoooooBooooWakiWaki which means they don't have a license to collect in the USA.  Of course this makes them harder to track down, but you should at least file a complaint with the FTC and your Attorney General.

    Just received a call from this number stating I was receiving this last call warning me of I didn't act now I was going to be served at my place of employment. I called them back and Aubrey answered the phone. She wouldn't give me the name of the company she was calling from. I asked for the name of the company who was "filing charges" and she said it was Capital One. She said I openned a capital one account and purposely defrauded them and this morning, at 7:55, the court released my paperwork for the lawsuit for $3,053.00 and the process server in my area will be coming to my job. I stated I did not open any account with Capital One. She said she believed me, but we could stop this by me paying $553.00 right now. She then gave me my first and last name, SSN and an address I lived at 14 years ago.... A bit scary, but seems like a scam. I advised I would pursue with a lawyer

    Same here.  Confronted guy named Adam about how all our charges are the same and said I was giving the number to the attorney general and he hung up. I called back and asked for the company name and he gave me the name Goldman Associates. I asked for an address and he said he couldn't give the address because of security issues.

    I received the same call a few times, when I try to challenge them they hang up. The caller had said
    something about some sneakers that i recently purchased. I remember i gave me info to someone at providence place mall to order some sneakers. If anyone else is getting the same calls and bought some sneakers at that mall. Beware. Also because they like to harass people on the phone what I do is call them and hang up about 100 times a day. others should join in to do this also.

    OK, i got this same call yesterday -- angry woman left me exact same message that she has been leaving all of you... that she is collecting on a debt, this was final attempt, she needed my address or else she would put a lien on any property I owned, etc.  She did use my full name (first, middle initial, last) and left the call back number of 617-939-0120, plus a case number to reference when I call back.  I called back and got automated voice recording telling me to leave a message -- nothing official sounding... sounded like regular automated voicemail recording on any standard cell phone.

    This call scared me to death.  I am so glad I googled it and found this page.

    I did file a complaint with the FTC and am about to lodge one with my state's Attorney General right now!

    Thanks guys!!
