tried to verify my work information, a strange lady with strange accent. When asked for what purpose, she hanged up.
I've had the same experience twice this morning. First a guy calling himself "Chris Lawrence" tried to get me to verify my job title, office phone, fax number, etc. I gave him a pretty hard time, including mimicking his accent and asking him if he really expected me to believe his name was "Chris Lawrence," after which he hung up. About five minutes later, a woman with a pleasant voice and a similar accent (although her articulation was a bit crisper) called me and began asking the same questions. I asked her where she was calling from, and she started talking about "a" firm that that maintains government databases -- at which point I stopped her and asked specifically for the actual name of her company and where it was located. She also hung up. The next one who calls I will try to keep on the line a bit longer, since it's so much fun to f*** with these people.
My co-worker just had the same thing happen for her boss. I got on the phone to try to figure out what was going on and when I questioned who they were, they requested my email address. Said they were verifying a Federal Contact Directory. Sounded like a foreigner to me.
Just got a call half an hour ago. Woman with some sort of accent who wanted to confirm my job title. I asked her name and she mumbled something. When I asked the name of the company on behalf she was calling she hung up.
Same thing with me. Got a call today from a lady with an accent calling from 632-859-0400 asking for personal info. She said she was with a federal verification form, and when I asked on whose behalf she was calling she hung up
This # called me twice (DOC in DC) back to back. I was busy/didn't recognize # so I didn't answer. When they called the 2nd time, I thought they were trying to get my cel # off my voicemail- was waiting for that to ring, but it didn't. Guess they didn't want to push their luck calling a gov't celphone. This really bothers me they call government numbers at random looking for information - what bothers me worse is that some idiots give it to them! How do you know this is not a terrorist?!?! Why do you think they removed all location information from gov't listings on the web and just list our phone numbers?
I received a call from this number at my place of employment. I could not tell if the call was transferred to me or not. The woman had an accent and had my name. Then she asked to verify my title. My title was not the same as she had. Before I could get anything from her, she hung up. A search of NANPA.com indicates this is a general purpose code. I sent an e-mail to NANPA to see if they could provide any info on where this number originated from.
Same experience as others. The caller had my info -- fax number and email address, knew my name and phone number....he just called to confirm it. All of this is available on the web, so I'm not sure how this scam works.
I just got a call from a number 632-859-0400. A woman asked me to confirm my fax number. When I asked who she was she said Sidney from the Federal Government Directory. When I asked for additional information she hung up.
I also received a call from this number asking my confirmation of my name. When I asked who was calling, they hung up. When I tried to recall the number, I received a recording stating this number was not in service.
I work for a Federal agency and I just got a call from someone asking for my boss. When he asked if he could send me a FAX, I asked what it was regarding and he hung up.
I answer the phone with my name, "This is ..." so I think the guy was confused. There was a long pause and I said hello and he said, "My name is John, is this ... and is your title ...". I confirmed both and he hung up. I don't get it. All of this information is free to the public. What is the scam and why Federal employees?
I received a call 4:25 pm 5/8/08 at my place of employment. I answered with my office name, title, and last name. A man with an accent (who apparently did not hear what I said as I answered) asked for me with full first and last name and my previous title. When I responded with "This is she", he hung up. The number on the caller id was 632-859-0400.
I had a message on my answering machine with this number associated with it. The message was just some breathing and maybe touching of the mouth piece and such, but it lasted for 15 or 20 seconds. I googled the phone number and found this site. Interesting! I'm in higher education at a private university.
