I received a text message from this number thanking me for visiting WalMart online.  It said I would receive a free $20 gift card and to call 877-680-4175.  I called the number and they began to ask me my name, my address, my phone number and then they asked for a credit card for a $4.50 charge.  I refused and ended the call.  I then called WalMart and they said they do nothing like this and they do not reward gift cards.  There is a full explanation of this type of thing on their website.  NEVER give your personal information, credit card numbers or social security numbers to anyone you don't know!

Thanks for the tip. I didn't call. At least they had enough respect to up the bribe, from $20 to $200.

Exact thing just happened to me. I called the number they offered me $200. When she asked for my credit card information I asked her what company she worked for and she said "uhhhh hold on let me speak with my manager" she got back on the phone and said, "ok so i am with (named some company) if you want this voucher im gunna need your credit card info" These people are seriously stupid. Isnt there a way to report them and trace the number. I actually traced the number that text me to the Bronx in New York.

Left a message with the DA in consumer affairs in NY.  Hopefully they'll do something about it.  Call the State's Attorney/District Attorney or whatever they call themelves in the particular jurisdiction where the call originated from in order to help stop this from happening (at least by this particular syndicate).

Just got a text message from this same number with the same request to call and receive my $200.00 Wal mart card.  I was suspicious but wanted to see if I was correct.  The guy asked for my date of birth!!!!  I asked him why he needed my birth date and he said to get to the next screen (I didn't give it to him) then I asked if I was going to have to buy something and he said I would need to pay shipping and I said that I didn't want it and hung up.   These people are thieves!!!  How does Wal-mart let them get away with using their business like this?????

Just received the text. I called the 1-877 number and was transferred over to a man. He immediately started asking for my name. I gave him a fake name and told him before I gave him any more information I wanted to know who he was and why he texted me. He told me he needed more information before he could "go to the next screen". I told him he should know why I was calling, since he sent me a text saying I won a $200 gift card. He then sighed and hung up on me.

I think this is somehow tied to a debt collector.  Some [***] named Peter Smith has been giving his creditors my phone number.  I have owned this number for over 10 years, and I have never known anyone named Peter Smith.  I also don't owe anyone one red cent.  But for the past year, I have been getting VERY annoying calls from his creditors, who refuse to believe that I don't know him.

Well, I got this text yesterday and it is addressed to Peter.  It reads:
"Peter Free $200 Retail Gift Voucher.  Get yours today by taking our quick 4-question survey..." blah blah blah...you know the rest.

Now why in the world would they think this was Peter Smith's number if they didn't get the info from a creditor or collection agency?
