- Alfalfa replies to FrustratedThis is a criminal extortion scam operating out of India. They are making the calls utilizing VOIP and the names of legitimate firms to make it appear the calls are originating from within the US. There is NO "company" or "debt" and you will NOT be arrested. They are harvesting and/or buying consumers' personal identifying information from unscrupulous websites like the one you may have filled out an application with, and you need to do whatever you can to protect yourself. This includes: Notifying the FTC: https://www.ftccomplaintassistant.gov/, placing fraud alerts with all three credit bureaus, notifying your bank and employer and letting these criminals know you are aware they are attempting to extort money for a non-existent debt and have alerted the authorities.
ABC News released an investigative report on this scam in June. The FTC has indicted one of its ringleaders for criminal fraud:

- LeeCalled for another person -- Tiffany so and so (not me). The caller said his name is David Marshall with some law office. He's been calling my young daughter's (elementary school age) cellphone. He threatened to "make her homeless" if her mom (again, no idea who Tiffany is) doesn't pay them the money. In his most recent message, he claimed that Tiffany's social security number is the target of a government investigation and that she will go to jail if she doesn't pay up. Ended the voicemail abruptly with "do not ignore this call, Tiffany. We will fight you."
Reported them to the FTC.... - rxtechreceived a call and voicemail from these scammers....4 charges?......owed money?....pay $250 to stay out of jail?.....once we called back they decided to "demand" $100 instead to "keep me out of jail"......what a joke! i won't look back - ridiculous!!!

- KBReceived several messages from an Officer Roger Gibson, stating he was with the State Investigation Department. His messages said that I would be arrested at work, if I didn't take care of this matter.
When I called back, he had a very heavy accent (sounds like he's Indian). He couldn't give me any information about this so called debt that I owed, however he wanted me to get a prepaid credit card, put $454.00 and call him back with the authorization number.
I knew it was a scam, and I didn't owe anything to them. When I began to interrogate him, he hung up on me. I called back to give them a hard time as they were giving me. I told them that I was reporting them to the police.- Caller: State Investigation Department of New York

- XxThere are a lot of law firms in NY with the name Hopkins and none for Ross. My guess is that it's a scam. Usually when these fake companies call and use different caller ID's then it's a scam. And threatening people with jail time is a definite scam
- Sp| 1 replyReceived a call from a Roger Gibson said he was with the State Investigation Department and that this call was regarding a complaint on me and my ss# and I am facing charges and could go to jail if I didn't take care of this. I know it's a scam. But how do I get them to stop calling?!
- Caller: Debt collector
- Gunnar replies to SpAnswer, tell him all your calls are being logged and recorded. Then tell him you know he's a fraud and that he's wasting his time.
Google FDCPA and visit the FTCs website. Know your rights.
Gunnar - DocThey are calling 2-4 times a day and the same guy keeps indentifying himself as different people. Today he identified himself as a state trooper and told me to go turn myself in at any local police station and that there was a federal complaint agaisnt me. Then he proceeds to give me a FL phone number I can call to resolve this with the officer who filed the complaint. I contacted my state police and the said there was no such warrant and that they had other calls about this same thing and it's a scam. They use spoof numbers from all over and in fact called me today on 4 different numbers including 911! In case you aren't aware you will not receive inbound calls from a 911 #. It's a total scam but they don't give up and since they are calling from India there doesn't seem to be much the Feds can do to them.
