"number does not exist" says the telephone company's automated system.
isn't Caller ID spoofing illegal?

Yes, for the most it is illegal.   However,  there are some measured exemptions.    Law enforcement,  Private detectives,  bail bondsmen,   and unfortunately debt collectors,    can use spoofing to a limited degree.   Just another hole in the government's  system of allowing certain considerations to its chosen few.

I missed a call from them and when I called back. They said it was for some home security system. So I hanged up since I already have some lol.

Spoofing to mis-identify the caller's identity is never legal.  There are exemptions for robodialing, but not for spoofing.

I got one of these call and I wonder if these reporting companies make from us, when we pay for their services.

This number called me and when I answered no one responded. I called back and turns out number don't exsist.

I finally was able to actually get a (real) company name for this "spoofed" telephone number. Caller ID shows the fake number and the caller as PrimeAlm; the real company is HSS Home Security Services; they want to place a sign in your front yard in exchange for a "free" alarm system. Their robo-call recording offers an "opt-out by pressing a number" but the opt-out does NOT work!

I took the time to go through their sales pitch and booked an install... To a non-existent address.

It's funny... they say they'll remove you from their list... I've threatened to go down there and cut the skin off their faces, and they *still* continue to call me at least once a month, and every single time they "take me off their list"

I got a call on my cell phone from this number.  I rejected the call, looked them up here, got no real info, so I called them back.  Turns out it is a company trying to sell security systems.  I do not know the name.  When you call them, you get an automated message telling you that if you are interested to do something but I hung up before receiving the rest of the instructions.  

This is a robo-dialer checking to see if the line is active.
For those of you with Android phones, just add the number to your reject call list.
You'll never get another call from them again.

If you advise them that the call is being recorded they will hang up an never call back.  I love this trick!

Same here in KY they wanted to sell me a security system. I cut him off short and told him I was secure and ended the conversation.
