Stated they had kidnapped my brother and would shoot him unless I sent them $2000.00, and even told me what road they were on.

Very famous scam. As always, call the person they claim to be/be holding. Updated extortion scam right out of the 30's.

Make a police report, quicktime!  Go down to the police station in person.  The more complaints made in writing the more the police are under pressure to investigate. There's a lot of this going around in Florida also in and around Rhode Island for some reason.

Literally received a call from this man today, and my situation is exactly like in the previous comment. He told me a relative of mine had an accident. But I'm a foreign student and I have no relatives here. I told him that and he got kind of nervous and finished the conversation.

Just received the same call in Miami.  Text was in English.  Called back the number, gentleman only spoke Spanish.  Wanted to get more and more information from me.  I asked them to describe the people in the car accident -- they couldn't.  I asked them to tell me which hospital they were going to -- he told me Miami International Hospital.  I checked online quickly and found that the hospital is for animals not for people.  I hung up.  Be wary of what information you give out.

I received the following text message: "Sorry, it's been a car accident here in Miami at a gas station with someone you know and is very injured.  Please call back at this number."  Four minutes later, he called me.  He was aggressive and asked questions about my family: do I have a sister, cousin, or parent who drives; what are their names; etc.  He was bilingual (English and Spanish).  He told me the accident was between a white Nissan and a darker car.  He hung up the phone when I refused to give him information.  I made a report with the FTC and intend to make a police report.

It's a variation on the Grandparent scam. Very well known & has been on the news a lot. As you did, never give out personal information on a call you did not make. Someone's injured? Call them & ask. You'll find them in perfect health. Imagine that.
