That is because the number displayed on caller ID was not the real number that called you. Search on caller ID spoofing for an explanation of what that means.

That's not necessarily true.  There are VoIP phone companies with call filtering options that can reject a call and, while doing so, play a "number out of service" to the caller.  But you can still call out using the line that is supposedly "out of service" and have the caller ID number show up properly as the assigned number.

If the call filtering is set up cleverly, it can create a blacklist, a whitelist, or just a list of numbers to reject.

The upshot is that a number on a caller ID for a call you just received isn't *necessarily* spoofed just because you receive a "number out of service" message.

Another possibility is that the message could simply be a voice mail greeting recorded by a caller to make it seem like the number is out of service to encourage people to hang up before the voice mail starts recording.  Those "in the know" will just wait, while everyone else will hang up.

these intellectually challenged actually came up really stupid stunt, the caller ID says: "Eat Here". Just how more obvious can you get that it is a scam from a prefix that isn't even in your state.

I was called by a banker at my local Wells Fargo.  I knew the reason for the call so it wasn't unsolicited.  I had a question that he had to get back with me on.  Few min later a call from this number came up but it wasn't the same as the banker caller ID from earlier.  So it went to vm but when I checked it, it was the banker leaving me a message to call back, but he left a different number to call back. When I called both numbers back it just rang and rang.  So not sure with how they are calling from numbers that apparently do or don't belong to them.

There are numerous Wells Fargo scams in the works, both via email and phone calls. Always be sure the number you call back is a valid number for Wells Fargo, and even though the first call you got was one you expected, it's always wiser to hang up on that cold call and call back a number you know to be correct for the place you want to reach.

Names and numbers on caller IDs can be faked easily, so although your caller ID might show Wells Fargo and a valid Wells Fargo phone number, the person calling might NOT be from Wells Fargo at all.

My CallerID said "Eat Here," which is interesting because I have already blocked another "Eat Here" with a number just two lower than this one.  The 250 blocks I get on my Panasonic are up to 225, many of them added just this month.

Received a call from the number. No message left.

This was a call from my doctor's office confirming an appointment for Friday. Their office number usually pops up, not this Georgia-based number.

Got a call from this number. I was driving so ignored it. Called back 5 min later and it says its not an active number???

This is strange. I work from home on VoIP. My office number (Utah based) usually shows up on my client's caller ID, as it should.
I am not a telemarketer and I don't make unsolicited calls. My real number is actually in most of my client's contact lists so I rely on it showing up when I try to reach them so that they know it's me calling.
Just now one of my clients reported to me that she almost didn't answer my call because her caller ID said I was calling from Georgia 678-365-0480.
This is a total mystery to me because I can assure I not only don't purposely mess with caller ID numbers, but my company and I actually want and rely on my number showing up accurately for my clients.
So my IT department is working on this now. But after reading the other comments here - I have a feeling that this is an issue with VoIP and can happen with a large number of calls being attributed to this mysterious Georgia number inadvertently somehow.
I, too, called the Georgia number to see what's up and it's not in service.

A guy from this number left me a two-word message. The first word was "hello", and I could not understand the second word. Then he just hung up.

I received a call from this number twice now. Both times it was my Mom calling me from her landline in Florida. She has her own number, not VoIP either. Strange!!

I got 2 calls the same day from this number. 1st one was identified as "Eat Here" and the 2nd as "Triple Crown Co." No message.

I just received a call from this number (Georgia). They left a message stating that my Child Support money had been deposited. It is not the number that typically calls and usually my deposits and phone call comes on Wednesday. In the message they said if I had any questions than I needed to contact a different # (which WAS our Indiana Child Support hotline). I called it and checked my balance....apparently it was deposited today.

I'm in Alabama and called a friend in Chicago.  She said it was strange because her caller ID said EAT HERE with that Georgia number. When we hung up I called my cell and the name and number showed OK.

My caller id displayed Eat Here.  Have no clue as to who or why they called.
