- Jessica| 5 repliesI just got a call from these people today saying that they have a fraud matter with me but could t give me any info except the last 4 of my social and my very old address! They said I would have 2 warrants out for me if I didn't pay them. They couldn't tell me the loan amount or the year I supposedly did this, which I didn't! They have called from other numbers before as well.

- KB replies to Jessica| 3 repliesI just got the same call. They stated that I have two felony charges against due to a payday loan. I told them I never had a pay day loan. Had me scared. So is this really a scam?
- JustinCase replies to KBYes it is, pay no attention to it. It's an extortion scam or the beginning of one. You cannot be arrested for those and you'll be hearing about it in the mail if it were real.

- Caller: fraud division
- Call type: Debt collector
- BigA replies to sally"When is something going to be done about this? " Well let's see. These are criminals calling you. they have obviously concealed their identity and are using caller ID spoofing to conceal their true phone number. So like any real case in the real world, you will find that it takes time to find them a build a case. In the meantime, you can do your part to help by reporting them and all the phone numbers that they are using.
Read up on your rights here, get template letters to send and also make a complaint at this government site: http://www.consumerfinance.gov/
Also file a complaint with your State Attorney General's office.

- ConcernedThese people are very threatening in tone. Once they realize that you are on to them they hang up the phone. They threaten with legal action but they cannot verify any information. I blocked them once but they called from another number.
- Call type: Debt collector
- Tami replies to JessicaExactly the same issue for me. Used my old married name and referenced an account back in 2010.
- CWG40 replies to DBeing in ordinary civil debt is NOT a crime and you cannot be arrested for it. This is a total scam. Trying to scare money out of you.
Report them:Just because someone on the phone calling you says you owe a debt does not mean you actually owe it.
If a voice on the telephone claims you owe a debt:
1. Demand the person give you his or her name, company name, and address
2. Demand a debt validation letter by US mail. E-mail no good.
3. Do not pay the collection agent or anyone else a dime until the debt is validated
Of course they won’t do this, no scammer ever will, so simply ignore them and block their calls.
If they are bothering you, report them:
http://www.consumer.ftc.gov/articles/0149-debt-collection (Threatening criminal process in order to collect a civil debt is a clear violation of the Federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act.)
Also contact your local attorney general
If they continue to bother you, and you know you do not owe any money, tell them that you know this is a debt scam and that you are making a complaint to the police for extortion. Once you get a copy of the police report and they call you again , just read out the file number and the name of the PD or Sheriff’s office involved. Tell them you’ll be glad to send a copy to them at whatever address the jack***es are working out of now.
You'll probably have to yell at them and talk over them. Tell 'em no scammy debt collector is going to push you around.
You have to get tuff with these people because, being akin to thugs, brute force is (metaphorically speaking). the only thing they understand.
