This morning I received a call from (703) 828-0618. The message left claimed to be from the IRS and warned that legal action would soon be taken against me. This does not sound like a legitimate call and I have not returned it.

These are criminal extortionists operating in overseas boiler rooms using VOIP to alter their identities and locations and out of the reach of US law enforcement.

If someone calls saying he's an IRS agent and demands that you send money immediately, hang up.
It's a phone scam.In fact, it tops the IRS "Dirty Dozen" list of tax scams this year, and it's been surging in recent months, the agency said Thursday.

The Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration (TIGTA), which oversees the IRS, has received reports of 290,000 scam calls since October 2013 and said nearly 3,000 victims have been swindled out of $14 million so far.

By altering their caller ID number to make it look like they're calling from an IRS office, these scammers often threaten vulnerable people like the elderly and new immigrants with things like arrest, deportation or the loss of their driver's license if they don't pay immediately for money purportedly owed.

Often leaving messages that say it's "urgent" you call them back, the scammers use common names and sometimes say they are from the IRS Criminal Division. They may even claim to know the last four digits of your Social Security number and send follow-up emails that appear to be from the IRS, TIGTA said.

They often demand that payments be made by prepaid debit card.

Once they make their threats, the scammers have been known to call back and again disguise their caller ID so it appears they are calling from the police department or the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV).

Or sometimes when they call, they may say you have a refund due and ask you to provide personal information so you can claim it.

The real IRS will usually contact you by regular mail first, if it needs to contact you at all. And the agency never demands immediate payment by phone or asks for credit card or debit numbers if they do call. It also never asks for personal or financial information by email, text or social media.

If you get what you suspect is a scam call, report it to TIGTA through its Web site or call 800-366-4484.

Likely spoofed CID lists Centreville, VA. Male voice, speech pronunciations denote Commonwealth, perhaps India. Usual crud about lawsuit from the IRS, no question this is a criminal fraud. Blocked. The criminals seem to come up with new spoofed numbers every month.

I received the call few days ago, and checked my voice mail today. I called them just to see who are they looking for as there was no name or phone number on the call. Each time they hanged up. I am wondering what's the benefit? They didn't even pretend to know my name or my number. They just hanged up each time I called.

Received 3 voice mails from this number yesterday stating that it was the IRS calling and that a law suit was pending if they did not hear back from me by COB yesterday.  I called the number and was on the phone for over an hour between two individuals. Both had strong accents.  I was told that an audit had been done of my taxes from 2008-2012 and that I owed back taxes due to filing errors. Both individuals gave me employee #s, IRS badge #s, case # and said that they were calling from the IRS auditing / bank department. I was read IRS regulations, penalties, and what was going to happen.  I was told that if I didn't make payment before hanging up the phone that within 40 minutes of disconnecting the call that I would be served with an arrest warrant and taken to jail immediately.

I was told that once I had the money in hand, that I would be given the address of an authorized IRS payment center where once I made payment I would be given a voucher.  That an appointment would be made for an IRS agent to come to my home, the next day, review the errors with me to ensure that the  same mistakes didnt happen again, and that I would hand the IRS agent the voucher at which time the case would be considered closed.

I asked to speak with the individual's supervisor, and I was transferred to another man with an accent, but at least I could understand this person a little better.  I told the individual that this all sounded very suspicious and that I wanted a number that I could call to verify the legitimacy of this phone call.  At which point he became angry and stated that after all this time they had spent working with me that they were reneging their offer to settle the claim.  I asked again how the payment process would work and he repeated the same info the other individual had given me reiterating that the IRS will never ask for bank account or credit card information by phone.

I admit looking back that I should have hung up the phone early on in the conversation.  I was so upset.  I had a panic attack over the phone.  The amount of money that they said I owed was more than I make in one year .  Here's the thing, I do owe the IRS, but I have made payment arrangements.  At first, I was trying to ascertain whether or not they were reneging on our previous agreement and whether or not the call was legit.  Once they described how I was to make payment, I was pretty certain the call was a scam.  If I didn't owe the IRS, the phone call wouldn't have gone as far as it did.

This was a very scary, unfortunate incident. Please, if you get a call from this number hang up.
