Message stated it was IRS and it was about tax evasion and they were going to send out the sheriff. - Jim| 2 repliesIRS Scam - this is an auto-transcription of the message they left:
"I'm calling you from legal affairs at the Crime Investigation Unit of Internal Revenue Service. We were trying to reach you in regards to a very important issues and spots(?) months and months. We have received an affidavit concerning a tax evasion on your name. The hotline division to reach us out is 703-879-6434. I repeat it's 703-879-6434. Don't disregard this message and do return the call. If for any reason you're busy to call us back. We would suggest to have your retained attorney to do it for you as delay in calling us back may end up into a legal mess for you. Further we will be forced to contact the local Sheriff office and register this case against your name. I hope we can resolve this matter as quick as possible. Thank you." - Alfalfa replies to JimThese are criminal extortionists operating in overseas boiler rooms using VOIP to alter their identities and locations and out of the reach of US law enforcement.
If someone calls saying he's an IRS agent and demands that you send money immediately, hang up.
It's a phone scam.In fact, it tops the IRS "Dirty Dozen" list of tax scams this year, and it's been surging in recent months, the agency said Thursday.
The Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration (TIGTA), which oversees the IRS, has received reports of 290,000 scam calls since October 2013 and said nearly 3,000 victims have been swindled out of $14 million so far.
By altering their caller ID number to make it look like they're calling from an IRS office, these scammers often threaten vulnerable people like the elderly and new immigrants with things like arrest, deportation or the loss of their driver's license if they don't pay immediately for money purportedly owed.
Often leaving messages that say it's "urgent" you call them back, the scammers use common names and sometimes say they are from the IRS Criminal Division. They may even claim to know the last four digits of your Social Security number and send follow-up emails that appear to be from the IRS, TIGTA said.
They often demand that payments be made by prepaid debit card.
Once they make their threats, the scammers have been known to call back and again disguise their caller ID so it appears they are calling from the police department or the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV).
Or sometimes when they call, they may say you have a refund due and ask you to provide personal information so you can claim it.
The real IRS will usually contact you by regular mail first, if it needs to contact you at all. And the agency never demands immediate payment by phone or asks for credit card or debit numbers if they do call. It also never asks for personal or financial information by email, text or social media.
If you get what you suspect is a scam call, report it to TIGTA through its Web site or call 800-366-4484.

- LindaReceived a call from 703 879-6434 telling me that the IRS was accusing me of fraud. The person spoke with a heavy accent and said he was officer Michael Black badge # 7796 at the IRS headquarters and did I want him to speak to my criminal attorney. He was going to read me the charges against me over the phone. I told him I had no written notification of any wrong doing and hung up to call my husband who did a google search and came up with this information. I am writing the IRS about this
- Caller: IRS - or so he said

- Les JohnsonJust received a voice message from a girl with a heavy Spanish accent. IRS DOES NOT phone so knew it was a criminal scam.
- Mike replies to JimReceived call today from (703) 879-6434. They said I owed taxes from 2008-2012 and have clearly defrauded the IRS. It sounded suspicious because person identified himself as "Steve Evans" but had a heavy accent and claimed to be with IRS Legal Dept. I asked why I am hearing about this now for the 1st time and hadn't been notified in writing. He said I had been notified by snailmail 3 times (not true) and by not responding now I am running from the IRS. I am being sued by the IRS, liens will be placed on my home, car, and bank, and I face federal tax evasion charges and a 5-year prison term. I may be able to avoid this by paying $97,000, though he didn't ask for a credit card or otherwise demand payment. He said at end of call, case will be downloaded to court and sheriff will come today to place me in handcuffs and behind bars. I hung up at that point, called the local police and county sheriff, both said this is a scam.
- m. Kay| 1 replyYes it was definitely a scam. These guys asked me to stay on the line and get my keys and check book and every few minutes say "yes" to let them know I was on the line still....they had my address and phone number...It was scary to think they might have someone follow me. Let me say I knew it was a scam but was wanting to see how far they would go and what they would want from me. I told them I was recording this conversation and they hung up...lol.. also I kept calling them back and giving them a hard time. They even had the nerve to call me a "f$%#king old lady" (Im not that old) lol and got indignant because I was using up their minutes...hahaha. He said "how would you like it if I called you and used up all your minutes" I quit giving them a hassle when I thought that they might have someone in the usa who might follow me because why did they want me to go to the bank and stay on the line...little scary but it was fun giving them a hard time.

- JoeyDee replies to m. KayThey wanted you to stay on the line while you drew a few hundred bucks, or more, and then went to Western Union or some place where you could get a green dot money card and give them the card number and PIN.
- JoeyDee replies to ChrisYou should realize you're reporting on a spoofed number. Caller ID info is no longer reliable, as that information can easily be faked, and that's what these scammers are doing. The calls are probably coming from India over VOIP.
- ArleneMy friend just received the same scam phone calls. Beware and don't give out your personal
information.- Caller: IRS
- sharon| 1 replyReceived the same today as everyone else is saying tried calling back after reading posts no answer. Where do you report these people
- Call type: Debt collector
- Mike replies to sharonHi Sharon, you can report them to Treasury Inspector Tax Administration www.tigta.gov and/or the Federal Trade Commission. I also reported them to the police.
- Dan| 1 replyGot a call with exactly the same message as above, ""I'm calling you from legal affairs at the Crime Investigation Unit of Internal Revenue Service…." identical, word for word. They have a script. I called back from a VoIP line and asked them what it was all about. It was the "legal department of the legal department of the Treasury Inspector General of the IRS in Washington in America." I asked how the weather was in Mumbai and the guy hung up.
