- Jesey George| 2 repliesIn looking the phone number on caller ID, I figured this was a telemarketing call but decided to answer it anyway. The Indian sounding male caller asked for my wife. When I said she was not here and would give her a message, he said it was an investigative matter by the IRS. I got a chuckle about that since this is a classic phone scam approach and don't think government agencies would initiate contact over the phone. I asked for his badge number, which he gave me (77962) and claimed to be "Officer Shawn Williams" - so he was ready for that challenge, appears the scammers are getting more sophisticated. He said my wife should call them back as quickly as possible to address the matter. After I hung up, I went on to the IRS website and did a search on phone scams - there was a lot of information they provide which supported the idea that they would NOT make any such communications over the phone or via email. They provided a link to the Federal Trade Commission to lodge complaints over such calls, so I went there and did that. They asked for a lot of details about the nature of the call, but unfortunately I did not get more during the call - maybe next time....
- Bob won't be Scammed replies to Jesey GeorgeI had same call. first was in the morning where it was an automated message which was followed up by Indian guy "Officer Shawn Williams". Next time, if I answer I'm going to see what personal info they can provide me.
- Sandi replies to Jesey GeorgeI received the same call earlier today. Officer Black, Badge #77962 from the IRS asked for my sister regarding a legal matter. I told him she was not available and asked for his telephone number (703-879-6753) so that she could return his call. For the record, she won't be returning the call . . .my sister died in 2006. Hahaha scammers can't fool me.
- BeeI just picked up an automated message with an Indian woman's voice telling me I was being sued by the IRS and that I should not ignore this message and to call them back at 703-879-6753 immediately. Initially I was suspicious but still concerned. You see I am a non practicing CPA and should know better but it still startled me. But, since I have been audited at least 2 times by the IRS I know they do not initial contact via telephone. So I was glad my suspicions were confirmed by this blog. Thanks for being there guys.

- AndreaI just picked up an automated message with an Indian woman's voice telling me I was being sued by the IRS and that I should not ignore this message and to call them back at 703-879-6753 immediately. I was suspicious and looked up on line some information. However thought I better call, when I started questioning the woman with a heavy accent she became rude. I told her that I knew this was a scam and not to call again. Filed a report with the IRS fraud line.
