- RDJust got a call from this number threatening about being arrested at my home or workplace. I've gotten calls like this in the past. They don't even mention your name or anything so it's a scam. sick and tired of these dumb calls. I ignore them and let them go to voicemail. One thing I am knowleadgble of is that these calls are definitely in violation of the FDCPA. Know your rights people!
15 USC 1692e
§ 807. False or misleading representations

of any debt. Without limiting the general application
of the foregoing, the following conduct is a violation of this
section:
(1) The false representation or implication that the debt
collector is vouched for, bonded by, or affiliated with
the United States or any State, including the use of any
badge, uniform, or facsimile thereof.
(2) The false representation of—

any debt will result in the arrest or imprisonment of
any person or the seizure, garnishment, attachment,
or sale of any property or wages of any person unless
such action is lawful and the debt collector or creditor
intends to take such action.
(5) The threat to take any action that cannot legally be
taken or that is not intended to be taken. - LisaJust recieved a call had a voicemail on my phone. I've had scan calls before but they r usually foreign accented people that use the name bob smith or believe this "John Hancock" haha. Ridiculous. Anyway this time the woman was very American sounding and telling me I am going to be arrested for check fraud to do with a pay day loan. I have a pay day loan I have been doing business with for three years with no problems and that's how they got my info. From the damn computer and if anyone has ever gotten a pay day loan you know you get 100 emails from other business after you apply one time. I told the woman I havnt even written a check in two years and I don't use checks also if I don't receive anything in writing then I guess I'll have to just be arrested!! This is horrible what they do to people!! Horrible!! I hope they get caught I really do!!

- KevinI just spoke to a person who said he was from the Jones Sullivan Law Firm in Davis, CA. (This was the number he used.) He gave the same information that I was being charged with three felonies (Violating Federal Banking regulations, Check Fraud, and Theft by Deception). I asked him to provide the documentation and said he could only do that in court. (If it is legitimate, they should be able to provide the documentation.) I have had payday loans and I have paid them (taking them out is a horrible mistake, but emergencies happen and it seems like I can never get enough saved for those emergencies. Every time I get a few hundred extra dollars, something happens exactly what that money is. My car always knows when I get an extra check.) Anyway, I must conclude this is fraud since they are unable to document anything. I also mentioned that it is in violation of Fair Collections and he said he wasn't trying to collect money.

- Vannybe| 2 repliesJust received a call from a Law firm of John Hill saying that I owe a money and I will be arrested in an hr. They told me an amount that I owe and that I was geeting sued for check fraud and money laundering. I can take care of it now to avoid getting arrested and everything to get cleared. They sounded Indian and I did get hung up on when I said that i didn't understand what was going, on I have not committed any crime. He said he didn't appreciate it my attitude and hung up. Called back a second time went through the same process the amount went up they mentioned online loan companies when asking questions to better understand they said they didn't have time to give me any more explanation and hung up again. I called the the loan company they said and varified that they have no account for me. She said its the scams going around. What a way to ruin a persons day!

- RD replies to Vannybe| 1 replydont let it ruin your day. It's not worth it, they are just trying to scam innocent people and you were only target. I laugh all the time when I listen to these voicemails. Arrested??? Really??? No debt collector can arrest you if you can't pay, they either have to sue you for the debt and even then they still won't do it cause of it's going to cost more in legal fees than the actual amount owed.
- Alfalfa replies to RDThe Federal Trade Commission (FTC), the nation's consumer protection agency, is warning consumers to be on the alert for scam artists posing as debt collectors. It may be hard to tell the difference between a legitimate debt collector and a fake one. Sometimes a fake collector may even have some of your personal information, like a bank account number. A caller may be a fake debt collector if he:
•is seeking payment on a debt for a loan you do not recognize;
•refuses to give you a mailing address or phone number;
•asks you for personal financial or sensitive information; or
•exerts high pressure to try to scare you into paying, such as threatening to have you arrested or to report you to a law enforcement agency.
If you think that a caller may be a fake debt collector:
•Ask the caller for his name, company, street address, and telephone number. Tell the caller that you refuse to discuss any debt until you get a written "validation notice." The notice must include the amount of the debt, the name of the creditor you owe, and your rights under the federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act.
If a caller refuses to give you all of this information, do not pay! Paying a fake debt collector will not always make them go away. They may make up another debt to try to get more money from you.•Stop speaking with the caller. If you have the caller's address, send a letter demanding that the caller stop contacting you, and keep a copy for your files. By law, real debt collectors must stop calling you if you ask them to in writing.
•Do not give the caller personal financial or other sensitive information. Never give out or confirm personal financial or other sensitive information like your bank account, credit card, or Social Security number unless you know whom you're dealing with. Scam artists, like fake debt collectors, can use your information to commit identity theft – charging your existing credit cards, opening new credit card, checking, or savings accounts, writing fraudulent checks, or taking out loans in your name.
•Contact your creditor. If the debt is legitimate – but you think the collector may not be – contact your creditor about the calls. Share the information you have about the suspicious calls and find out who, if anyone, the creditor has authorized to collect the debt.
•Report the call. Contact the FTC and your state Attorney General's office with information about suspicious callers. Many states have their own debt collection laws in addition to the federal FDCPA. Your Attorney General's office can help you determine your rights under your state's law.
http://www.consumer.ftc.gov/articles/0258-fake-debt-collectors - RebeccaJust received a voicemail saying the same stuff. They are a lawyer and its about my case and I'll be arrested at my home or workplace. Dumb. My question is why they are asking for lawyer info? - MelissaI just received the same type of phone call from 714-602-3772. I let it go to voice mail. The caller said that it was in regards to a law suit filed against me and that I would be arrested at my home or workplace if I did not call her back immediately. It has to be a scam. I've never even received anything in writing about any debt I owed that was in collections. I do have loans but they are all paid on time. Horrible, horrible people. Don't be scared just call them out on it and they will hang up.

- Alfalfa replies to JessicaThey do because they can. These extortionists are very convincing, which makes their scam so successful---in addition to the fact it is next to impossible to track them down because they are either using disposable cell phones or spoofing numbers and the names of firms utilizing VOIP to make them appear they are legitimate.Your best protection against becoming another victim of these criminals is to educate yourselves with the following facts (straight from the FTC's website):

- Ms. BrownGOT THE SAME DAMN SCENERIO TODAY. Just got my phone number two weeks ago so no one has it and I don't have any type of debt in collections. You must be served law suit papers or any other type of court papers. So the court and petitioner know you recieved the papers along with court dates, and to give you a chance to reply to them.
Tell the caller to cease and desist. This is an order or request to halt an activity (cease) and not to take it up again later (desist) or else face legal action. The recipient of the cease-and-desist may be an individual or an organization. Cease-and-desist letters are also known as "infringement letters" or "demand letters".[1]
