- not Michael replies to erinIts a scam, and its all over this board. The scammer is trying to scare you into paying a debt you don't owe. You can safely ignore it.
If the calls don't stop you may want to install a call blocker. - WolfmanJack replies to erin| 3 repliesThis is a common ploy by criminals masquerading as debt collectors who are attempting to extort money from people by scaring you into believing that you will be criminally charged, go to jail, lose your driver’s license, have wages garnished, be sued, and a variety of other variations on this, all for an alleged or nonexistent debt. One of the tricks they use is to call your work place, friends, or relatives repeatedly in an attempt to shame you into paying. They also use the “process server” ruse who calls and claims he is going to serve you, but then says you could avoid it by calling another number
Federal law (FDCPA) requires them to send you a letter (US MAIL ONLY) within 5 days of their first contact that contains their name, physical address, the creditor’s name, and the amount of the alleged debt. It also must contains “mini-Miranda” telling you that it is an attempt to collect a debt and that all information will be used for those purposes. The one other important thing that this letter must also have in it is that you have a right to dispute the debt within 30 days of receipt of the letter and if you do so, all collection activity must be stopped until the debt is verified.

- AnnonymousOh this was such a fun phone call to handle. Some guy with a fake Australian accent tried to say he was law enforcement in New York. I have a warrant for my arrest for an unpaid loan. I started laughing. He got pissed that I was laughing at him. I then explained that I know he's a fraud and he is misrepresenting himself as law enforcement which is a crime. He then stated that I do not know that he is not law enforcement. I started laughing again and advised him that unpaid bills or debts here in America are not considered a CRIME and you cannot be arrested for that. So he's either A) ignorant as hell or B) obviously not in America. I advised him that I have his voicemail saved and I will use it to sue him and I will will. I am also going to report them to the FCC. He then told me to "[***]" and hung up on me. I immediately called back and he refused to answer the phone. I received a voicemail. I then laughed on it and told him I had our conversation recorded and I would be using that in court as well. SUCKER!
