Ive been getting threatening calls. They claim 2b investigaters and give pretrial #. Called back after hours and theyre a collection co. Told them that DA in New York State said they were mis rep  and could b charged. Tell em u reported them to DA in Niagra falls. They will yell at u but leave u alone 4 awhile

I got 2 calls, one on my cell and the other at my work!!!!!! Very threatening!!!!! Knew the last four of my social and my age!!!!!! Said I had 24 hours to respond and then they were going to send out a summons for me to appear in court!!!!!!  How can they get my social???? Should I be worried because I am!!! Said they are going to come to my work!!!!!!!

HELP!!!!!!!!!! PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!

My EX-mother in law got a call trying to get information about me. Said he was Investigator Green from Buffalo. I have already been scammed 2x by companies saying I have an outstanding debt but will not provide me with the details of this so called debt. I am going to tell them that I am reporting them to the FBI for fraud. I live paycheck to paycheck also and dont need this added stress in my life. Someone needs to stop these people!!!

Don't panic.  These are companies that are simply collection agencies with bad practices.  Whether you owe money or don't, this is not how debts are collected.  I'm even aware of companies that threaten to send the police directly to your house. You'll be wasting your time waiting for them.

What they try to do is settle for a certain percentage on the dollar. They are trying to see what they can get from you at the moment.  As far as sending out a summons, they don't have the authority to do that.  They're just trying to scare you.

First things first. Have them send you all legal documentation via mail. Not email, but good old fashioned snail mail, or Fedex, or registered.

Secondly, inform them the next time (hopefully there won't be one) that they are being taped.  By law you have to let them know.  Tape them or don't, it's up to you. The tone will change.  

Lastly, try to find out what they are trying to collect on.  The tactic they use is simply one of trying to collect on aged debt.  Something you may have not paid when you were 18, but has been forgiven or written off by now.  

Wait until you get something in the mail.  Then pay it or don't.  Nobody is going to come knocking on your door.  Tell them politely to move on to the next person as you no longer have time for this.  

If you owe something to the original company, you can find out from your credit report.  If you don't, then play any games you wish to with them.

I'm not trying to be mean to them, but the way they scare some of the older generation is just not funny. They try this scam on people living on savings or social security.
