yup! that is correct. They are called Pioneer Credit Recovery. They are for you student loans. They leave a recording but do not say who they are. I have a different 1-888 number they call from too. But when I call back this 718 number it says your call may be recorded then it hangs up on you. They are not too bad when you do talk to them. They are very good about working out a reasonable payment. If you never call them back or try to settle your loan, they will garnish your wages. Once you have paid a certain amount out of default of your school loans you can have it deferred if you cannot afford to pay at that time.

Pioneer Credit Recovery is a legitimate collection agency working on behalf of the U.S. Dept. of Education to collect defaulted student loans.  That being said, their tactics are often unethical at best.  Once the government hands over your Direct Loan account to PCR, you do have to work out a payment plan with them; however, you can then pay the U.S. Department of Education *directly* for the duration of the nine-month agreement, at which time your account is out of collection and back with Direct Loans.

I immediately began paying the US Department of Education when I entered the repayment program, because that was the original creditor and who the mail came from.  Later, I found out that the collection agency doesn't get their "cut" for collecting the debt unless they collect two payments from you, which they can't legally force you to do if you are paying the original creditor as agreed.  So that is probably why the agency will keep calling you ( and me! ), saying that we haven't been paying our accounts and trying to browbeat us into paying that magical second payment.

They could be calling about a relatives' or friends' account. In my case they were calling about my brother and left a message saying he had used me for a reference.
They left an 877 phone number and a "reference" number. The reference number is something creditors use, so I asked my brother. He said NOPE, he'd never use me as a reference unless he asked me FIRST.

No one in our family ever had a student loan.  NO ONE.  I believe this is a scam company and if they persist in harassing us, our lawyer would love to go scalp hunting.    BTW,  we're both in our seventies.

This is a scam! Report them to police!

Do not give out any of your information. They will use it against you and claim you owe them money from a prior loan. It's all a scam. This has been on the news several times. The authorities are trying to locate them and arrest them.
