- Michelle| 3 repliesSPAM= Jamaica, NY number. Just got a call from this number. The person from India said my computer was downloading a bad file and I should turn on my computer while on the phone. He spoke very fast and I just had to laugh at him. Of course I just hung up. When I tried to dial the number it was disconnected.
- MichelePerson tried to get me to go on the computer so he could show me I was downloading a file and he would fix it.
- South DakotaScary, the person from India (accent) asked for me by name, and knew what model Dell computer I had, Claimed my computer was downloading bad files. Told him my computer was at the Dell rapid repair depot so it was definitely NOT downloading bad files and hung up.
- Changyu LiuGot this call a couple of days ago. That was an Indian guy telling me my computer was sending some reports to windows server or something. (I did not really understand what he was saying. ) He wants me to go to my computer and do something. I told him I was not around my computer (actually I was) and told him send me an email and hang up.
What is scary is he knows my name, my number and my email. How come? Does he also know my credit card number? - LTJust called & said he had my registration for my Windows 7. I told him to have a lovely day & that I was calling my Attorney General. He hung up. Thick Indian accent.
- JV3rd try from them..... All ignored. They want me...let them leave a message, so I can determine if worthwhile.
- widow Hanson| 6 repliesA very nice indian boy called from the Dell service center. He said my computer needed tuning and he could do it for me. He walked me through various repair procedures and he set things up so he could work on my computer remotely in the future. I paid for a lifetime security package with my credit card. Does anyone know how to contact him? My computer is doing strange things now and going to sites like it has a mind of its own. Please forward this to him asap Thank you..
- Slim replies to widow Hanson| 3 repliesSince the scammers accessed the computer, they probably did one or more of the following:
• Disabled the anti-virus software
• Added nasty malware to the computer
• Copied the Contact List (so they can spam/email your soon-to-be ex-friends)
• Copied any financial data or passwords they could find
• Compromised your ID
• "Zombied" the computer, so it would respond to THEIR commands sent via internet
• Deleted some important files
• Asked for money to repair the damage they caused
What can you do immediately after such an attack?
1. Pull the cables on the computer, or otherwise disable it, so it cannot access the internet.
2. Change ALL passwords stored on the computer.
3. Run FULL malware scans on the computer, in "SAFE" mode!
4. Change the passwords again, particularly if the malware scans showed anything.
5. Inform your bank and credit card companies.
6. Sign up for credit monitoring, and check the status frequently
7. You may have to bring the computer to a local repair shop, and tell them the story.
8. Tell friends what happened, so they can be aware of strange emails from you.
9. Connect to the internet only AFTER all the above have been done.
10. Change the passwords on all online accounts. Even better - access a "safe", uninfected computer, and chance your online account passwords RIGHT NOW.
NOTE:
If your computer set a "Restore Point" while it was infected, any "System Restore" you make will re-infect your computer. Suggest you delete any potentially infected restore points and avoid setting such restore points until after your computer has been thoroughly cleaned!

Honest computer companies do NOT cold-call people, or cause popups from websites to tell them their computers need fixing!
Some scammers even have websites, and falsely advertise they are associated with popular software packages or computer companies; so do NOT believe a "we will fix your computer remotely" site, and allow them access to your computer!

- widow Hanson replies to Slim| 2 repliesI am writing to you on my cell phone as my computer is being workef on.
Your great response overwhelmed and terrified me. After reading it I unplugged my computer and called Dell cust service and was told they hadnt called me about anything and they dont call customers to inform them of problems with their computers.
Then I took the computer to a local repair shop to have it examined. He called this morning and said my computer was completely compromised and he hadnt see one this bad before. He suggested wiping the hard disc drives and reinstallling windows. But he hasnt done anything uet as I couldnt decide what to do.
Thank you so much for your help. Why do people do these things? - DaFox replies to widow HansonTo profit by stealing, that is why criminals commit crimes.
If the repair shop tech suggests to wipe and re-install, that might be your best course of action.
