It the cops.  They call from another state and they want money for your local police.

28 MARCH 2014    I called it back from another telephone, and this A "police protective" is what it's voice mail said!  What lengths some will go to try and scam you and scare you.  Why can't the NSA stop this crap!!!

I'm in Ohio and the call came up as Wireless Caller.  I didn't answer it.

Ah, so you think the local police are outsourcing this now?  We used to get calls directly from the Police Athletic League (PAL) in our city.

Got the call today and told them to remove my name.  They said they were exempt from the "Do Not Call List".

Quite possibly, particularly if they are criminals.

The DNC list does not automatically block calls.  Instead, it provides a list of  "do not call" phone numbers to legitimate telemarketers who pay a fee for the list.

The DNC list exempts political callers, survey organizations,  charities and companies with preexisting business relationships, but these organizations might have their own, internal Do Not Call list (ask them).

The DNC list  is not effective against criminals, spammers and scammers, because those people do not subscribe to the DNC list, and do not care if you are on or off that list.
Its purpose is to stop calls from legitimate telemarketers, and it does a pretty good job at that.

This number just called our home number and when I answered, you can hear the caller hang up.

They have to remove your name from their list if you ask, whether they're exempt or not.  

The call is obviously from a scammer.  Don't answer if you don't know the caller.  If it's important (legit), they'll leave a message.

Same here: This number just called my number and when I answered,  the caller hung up.  Thats not telemarketing, that is harassment.

This number hung up on me when I answered it, but it's the "Police Protective Fund".  It's a pseudo legit charity, but almost all the $ they collect goes to fundraising (getting more $)...mostly it goes to one of the employees (as no one can "own" a charity) to pay office rent and phones.  I wouldn't recommend donating anything because most of it will go to the "non-owner" who apparently makes a great living by doing this!

I also got the call from 740-818-5143.  He said his name is Bill Roach and is collecting for families of injured or killed police officers.  Since this is not even in our area code, I don't have time for the long speech.  

They didn't answer when 8 said "hello".  I called the # back back and the recording said I had reached 'the public awareness office for the police department....'  
Annoying...especially when you hurry to grab the phone at "nap time" (1:30 p.m.)

Not completely they aren't. Charities may call you one time, but if you then request to be removed from their call list, they must comply or be in violation of the law and you can report them. It may take some time, I had to get rude with callers from Infocision, but the calls did eventually stop. If they don't know the law, tell them!

Same here, Called at 7:15 PM, when I answered they hung up.  I am getting so sick of these annoying calls.  No Id on call.

after receiving a call from these guys and of course all they want is money and bank/credit card numbers. i told them i was in the middle of something with family to call back later, that i didn't have that info available at this time...So i could research
and plan for the next call. i called the police dept and asked if they were soliciting money for fundraiser, they said no. Only legit solicitation was for FOP shop with a cop program. they haven't called back yet.
