A collection call for someone I don't know with the same last name.  Wow.  How many Johnsons in the world?  My name was somehow associated about 15-20 years ago living at an address I've never had.  Seriously?  I answered only so they wouldn't keep calling.

Called looking for a Peggy or a Steve Z. (Zee?).  I think they're bill collectors but they use the "friend of the family" bit.  Told them to quit calling.

Got a voice mail saying to call them back about a file. File number in the message was wrong. When I called back, they asked for my social, which I would not give until they told me why they were calling me. They got really rude and demanded to know why I wouldn't give them my information. Got "ma'am"-ed a lot. Then they hung up on me.

A little research was done by myself and all information obtained is within this report: it has been a few days but:
I too received a call from 757-392-2094 at 8:47am, and no message was left. The Caller ID captured their Number & I returned the call.  A lady answered with "how may I direct your call", I stated "I didn't know" and informed her they had called me.  I was asked what my name was, I replied with "what company are you with", she dodged the question and instead stated "We Are A Preliminary Hearings Paper Filer" and then asked "is Josh Martin there"; I asked her "Who is that?" the lady then stated "we're sorry, we have called the wrong number" and hung up on me.

I ran a search on the number 757-392-2094 on 7/27/2011 after the call; the results are as follows:
    Line Type: Land-line
Phone Carrier: Kmc Telecom of Virginia, Inc.
    Country: USA
    City: Portsmouth City
    State: Virginia
    County: Portsmouth City
    Latitude: 36.8400
    Longitude: -76.3200
Owner information for this number and cellphones associated with this number are not apart of public records.

    Being that It's common knowledge if someone is going to file paperwork for a preliminary hearing, this would be done from an office of the court, so;

I have contacted the City Council in Portsmouth City, Virginia by e-mail (council@portsmouthva.gov) and have not yet received response concerning the matter. This is why I waited to post the report. When and If I get a response from them, it will be posted here in a separate report.

I have also contacted Portsmouth Circuit Court in Virginia by phone at (757) 393-8671: The gentleman who answered was made aware of my location, the phone call mentioned above and the possible fraud. The gentleman asked for the phone number and I gave it to him. I then asked the gentleman: "Do you have a Preliminary Hearings Paper Filing office at phone number (757) 392-2094"; the gentleman's repose was as follows:

"No, If there were any papers to be filed, our office would handle that".

He wanted me to talk to someone else about the call and transferred me to a lady's extension. I started over and told that lady about it, she asked me for the number I gave it to her. I stated to her that I believe it to be a fraud against their court and her immediate response was as follows:

    "No, it's not!"

The lady then asked for the number again. I got as far as 75739 and was interrupted with "You have called the wrong number this is area code 757 not 753; You need to call 753 area code". I then asked if I could be transferred back to the man who transferred met to her and she stated: "I can't, I don't know who that is", i told her good day and ended the call.

"I could not believe Portsmouth City Virginia courts disregard on the issue; with that conversation I'm beginning to believe the lady at that number doesn't care that someone is calling around the country pretending to provide services for the court of Virginia to obtain people's private information, or she is in on it; that's just my opinion."

Simply for the sake of knowing where the VA court wanted me to address this issue to; I called an operator in Virginia at (757) 555-1212; then asked "Where is area code 753 located at?"; the response I got from AT&T was: "That area code is not located anywhere within the United States", which was surprising; you think it would at least be somewhere right? For verification of this nonexistent area code you may call directory assistance and/or 1, the area code, followed by 555-1212.

The Virginia Circuit Court by way of 2 different employees conflicting personal statements, claims that it is both:
    a) not a number designated for a preliminary hearings filing office for the court; and
    b) that is also not a fraud being perpetrated

I say if this number calls you, do not give them any information about yourself, after all, the Virginia Court System didn't even know who they are...

If you wish to address area code 757 for the possible fraud being committed the email address of city council & phone number of the Virginia Court are within this report... Take care of yourself and be absolutely certain a company's authentic before handing over your personal information.
Someone calling your house and asking for information about you constitutes a search and seizure and is a violation of your Constitutional rights without a warrant, Just hang up, you do have the right to remain silent.

Hope I have been of some help

Got 2 calls in 2 consecutive days at 8am...Calls were for my exhusband who has never used this number and as a different last name than me (I went back to my maiden name after our divorce 14 years ago!!)....I knew it was a collection agency by the messages left...I'm an excollector and they violated the following the FDCPA by calling before 9am, and not leaving a toll-free number to call them back at...They are in Virginia, and I'm in Oregon...I'm calling a lawyer and getting paid!...As an excollector I understand the importance of people paying their debts (which I do)...As a private citizen with no deliquent debts, I value my privacy...

the law is actually not to call before 8am ... & they do offer a toll free number if asked for one :) it's called skipsearching previous addresses and comparing last names to eventually get in contact with the DEBTOR  my friend works there you have no case dear :) they can call you for 60 days consecutively if they want as long as they are only calling once a day it's not considered harrassment so this post sounds very silly to act like you are going to get 'paid' because you were called twice on 2 different days. & sadly in the world of internet no one has privacy

In the world of Bottom Feeding Debt Collectors, These folks have scrounged old debts from the files of other collectors.  Some of these debts are valid, Some of these debts are paid but not marked as such.  As a creditor, they are not bound by the same rules as telemarketers.  Just because you have no relation to the debt, does not excuse from getting the annoying phone calls.  I even went so far as to put the bottom feeding collection agency in touch with the actual debtor.  I stood in front of him while he gave them his correct contact information and made arrangements to pay the debt.  I received a call 2 days from the same company.

These people are annoying, but if no laws are violated, there is nothing we can do.

I recieved a call from this number 1-757-392-2094. The message had a case number and the lady on the phone said she had some documents fixing to leave her office and wanted me to know the seriousness of this issue. I called back and she told me about two different credit cards that I owned but the dates were wrong and I have not used those cards since 2204. Is this a legit company or a hoax? She told me she was giving me to 7:30 this evening to make arrangements paying a debt or she would be sending my paperwork to an lawyer. This company does not accept checks the only way they would take a payment is to be debited out of your account.

Thank you for your information!    I have never given my son-in-law or his phone # as a reference on anything, but he is the one they called first - then they called my #.     After reading your post, I'm going to go back and make sure my phone # is on the do-not-call registry (I put it on there a year ago).  But after reading your post and several others' posts, I certainly not going to waste my time by calling them.  If you do come up with any further info, please let me know.  My email is sunniione2008@gmail.com.  Again, many thanks!

Received a call asking to speak to EH, my mother-in-law. She has never lived with us or, as for as I know, you my address for any purposes. I suspect my dead beat sister-in-law may have directed these vulture's in our direction. I called them back once, and have not heard from them since. Used the same tactics: case number, urgent, no information who they are....TELLING TO SAY THE LEAST.

Thank you, Howard, for taking the time to investigate as you did AND to post your findings here for the rest of us.  There is also a "process server" at 304-205-0244 (West Virginia)  that says the person being served MUST be home at (specific date) to accept the summons to court.   I don't think that is the way things are done but, if so, then all criminals would be hot-footing it out of town when the server shows up. Right?
    Thank you again.

DO NOT GIVE THEM YOUR BANK ACCT NUMBERS!  They are hoping that people will get scared enough and will give them any info they want.  Close your bank acct if you did give any info. Report to your Atty General and  also the FTC.  And contact a lawyer specializing in these areas.  There really ARE people who can help.

The company called me after not being able to contact my dad who lives in another state. The caller had an accent and her line had static. When I asked her who she was she told me it was Sophia. I then asked what company she was with and how she got my info. She said she was protected by federal law and wasn't allowed to give out any info. Then she hung up!.I called back & someone else answered, I asked for Sophia & was put on hold. The next person I spoke to knew my name without me telling her and asked what I was calling for. I got the same federal law protection speech from her. I told her not to call me again & asked her questions about her company. She then got very rude & said I was only calling to harass her. She then stated that if I ever call again I will be charged w/ harassment. What a joke. This company is a bunch of pukes.

A bill collector asking for my husband's deadbeat ex-wife. The woman caller was polite, and when I told her "Rosalee" was my husband's ex-wife she offered to take my phone number off their calling list. (Fat chance that will happen!) At least she was polite.

I received a calll from these idiots, and they were asking for the name of an individual who sexually assualted my daughter!!!  They swore that he left this (my) number as an alternate number to call.  Bull Sh*t!  I called them on it and said that the S O B is in prison for what he did.  Instead of apologizing, and admitting their company made a mistake, this bimbo insisted that they were a legitimate company trying to reach this guy.

Icalled her and idiot, a SOB and told her never to call this number again.  Can you believe the jack [***] had the audacicity to ask me to give her the name of the prison he was in.  I told her to Google his name, it's public information, unlike the phone number of a minor who's been assaulted.

I hope she friggin got hit by a car on her way home!
