- brenda| 1 replyPortfolio blah blah.......is this company also called Calvary? Buyers of junk debt at portions of pennies on the dollar. Debts often out of statute of limitations. I have been inundated with calls from collection agencies of late and I know who I owe, they will be who I pay. Not these opportunistic leeches. This practice is ruthless and dirty, strictly a greed kind of idea. They count on the consumer: 1) not being educated 2) having a knee-jerk reaction of fear (for their credit, for their bank account) 3) the consumer not keeping records (for extended periods of time). I learned all this in less than 3 hours of research on the net. All these people avoiding the phone, a service they pay for! We, we pay for.
What is to be done? Anyone? Write letters to political people who are asking you to vote for them? Maybe blog, write to a newspaper? I have been stewing over ideas, if you can think of something, carry it out and tell others. I bet they have the same story, the phone rings all day and no one answers because they don't recognize who is calling- Call type: Debt collector

- Dan replies to TeresaGot a call at 7:30 pm PST, if its not this one its the other one leaving messages late on sunday asking you to call them back with an "account" number
- RD| 2 repliesCalled on Christmas Eve at 8:30 pm. What in the world?? I am going to figure out ALL the appropriate places to submit a complaint. The funny thing is that I have already gone through proving identity theft on the account that they are trying to collect on with the last company who bought the account. This is an account that was opened when I was like 15 years old. Even if it was mine, I wouldn't be liable because of it being opened prior to me being of legal age to enter into a contract but the worst part is that it never was mine. Someone is getting screamed at after the holidays!

- NekoNeko| 2 repliesI'm STILL recieving calls from these guys (and others like them) because neither of my two worthless sisters want to give out their phone number for their debt collections. I tried calling these guys to get them to take my phone # taken off, but I'm told that their offices are closed & all of their answering service boxes are full. Probably from people like us calling to tell them to bugger off, more than likely. I hate to say it, but I'm leaning towards just getting my number changed b/c I'm just tired of having debt collectors keep calling even though I keep saying that they no longer live here & I don't have their current information. They don't believe me & leave all of the info as is. I'm tired of being victimized because other people have given out my phone number as their own. I think that congress needs to pass stronger laws on sh*t like this so that when we tell them to not contact us any longer it should go into effect for anyone that debt company passes their information on to as well. I work hard & pay my bills on time so I can avoid crap like this. There is no good reason I should have to put up with it for my sisters.

- Cynic replies to NekoNeko| 1 replyNekoNeko: If your sisters are giving out your number as their own, they are committing fraud. Report them to the police--or at least tell them you will.
- AB| 1 replyThese people are calling about a Citibank debt that was written off in 1993. It was $6,0000 at the time. Since then I have cleaned up my credit and bought a house a year and a half ago, and here they come. I got rid of them for a while but I paid off my car and here they come again. I told them that Citibank has written off the debt. The guy started yelling at me, that's when I told him to get a life, a woman and a real job, he said he had a woman and I said no "YOU HAVE A MAN" that really ticked him off. Anyway before you start talking ask the person for their extension in case you get cut off, then after they close call the extension and blow a whistle into the voice mail, I did it 32 times, that usually gets rid of them. I know it sounds Psycho but trust me I am sane, whatever works.

- AB replies to ABThat should have read 6000.00.
- fcra no-how replies to CynicNeknoee and Cynic: Not only are the sisters committing fraud but the collector is breaking the law by calling when they have been informed not to continuing calling. Report them to the State Attorney General in VA, as well as your home state. Also report them to the FTC, FCC BBB AND the Banking and Financing department for VA and your home state.
I received a call at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday. I HAVE NO COLLECTION!
Problem is per FCRA guidelines they can call between the hours of 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.
BUT I also know before any telephone calls for collection can be made by a 3rd party collector they must attempt to contact people via mail. You have a 30-day right to dispute any collection claim. And this must be printed on the collection notice mailed to you, be it on the front or even very light nearly unreadable print on the back of the collection notice. ALWAYS send the dispute letter via return receipt and a cross-copy to the original creditor. Ensure you demand they deal with you via mail and NOT telephone. Then keep records of all the future telephone calls. If you told the original creditor not to call they are required to pass this information along. Therefore any telephone call prior to mail notice and/or after notification of "Do NOT call me" will be a violation of the law.
Taking your name of the do not call list will not help as they feel they are collecting a "rightful" debt. Don't talk. Write. Everytime they call, note the time, date and who called. Keep this for all the different people you contact to complain. I am with you!
