They said they were the department of treasury. And hire a lawyer, and they were sending the police to arrest me.
I am a law bidding person. No reason for a call like this.

Same thing just happened to me. They called me stating they wanted the name of my criminal lawyer and that agents would be coming to arrest me today for tax violations. Inspector Jason Brown was the person I spoke with. Stated it was regarding my 2009 taxes. Any idea if this is an April Fools joke or scam?

SCAM - YES!!!!!   If you did owe money, that would be a civil case - NO arrest, etc.  The IRS mails letters if there is a problem.  The website - www.irs.gov  has a link to the scam.

Received call (voicemail) from someone identifying himself as 'Allen' from the Dept. of Legal Affairs of the U.S. Treasury, helpfully giving me 'formal notification of a legal enforcement action' being started against my name. Had a very heavy foreign accent, Indian most likely, making him difficult to understand, but I believe he advised me to have my attorney call him back to he could help me with this 'legal mess.'  Looked up the number he called from and determined it was from an exchange, so cannot trace.  Almost sorry I didn't pick up the phone to talk to him while he was leaving his message -- might've been fun.

Total scam.  Originates in either India or Pakistan.  Ignore and block the calls.
    See:  http://www.irs.gov/uac/Newsroom/IRS-Reiterate ... -Telephone-Scam

    Report them:
    http://www.treasury.gov/tigta/contact_report_scam_ok.shtml

IRS does not file lawsuits.   Court action, if any is handled by the DOJ and all parties are entitled to legal assistance if it is a criminal matter.  But--tax disputes are for the most part civil matters.  90% of all IRS tax disputes are settled administratively.  IRS has absolutely no authority to call on local law enforcement for anything. Local law is never involved in IRS tax disputes. IRS has no powers of arrest.    If LE is necessary, US Marshals do the job.  IRS does not cold call anyone and ask for money. IRS does not accept Green card money paks for payment in any case.  No one is prosecuted for ordinary tax disputes. IRS has absolutely no authority over anyone's professional license. Professional licensing is handled by state governments.  Yes, levies on property to satisfy an existing tax obligation do occur, but only after a very long period of negotiation. And yes, liens are placed on individuals but  usually after a lot of negotiation and a failure to reach a settlement.    All determinations of tax liability are subject to appeals.  All  contacts by the IRS are initiated by US mail.

Same here.  Just got a call and reported it on the government link as a scam!  Introduced himself as Roy Johnson with a thick foreign accent and asked me to call the same exact number and ask to speak with my case worker, Bryan King.  WOW!  What losers!

My wife just received the same kind of call mentioned by other people on this thread.  A person sounding like some old woman speaking very softly, almost inaudibly, mentioned my wife's name and that the U.S. treasury planned unspecified legal action against and for us to retain a lawyer.  Unfortunately, for them I have a sister who is an attorney who has received similar baseless, harassing calls.  Please know we wish the best for anyone harassed by these characters.  My caller ID for the number referenced Baker, California.  Somewhere in that town sits a very disturbed individual.

A guy just called me claiming that he is from the treasury.  I made a rude comment and hung up.  He then called back saying that this could put me behind bars.  Total scam.  If there were issues with the treasury, you would receive a letter.

    Not falling for it
I have to laugh after I answered this call knowing it was a scam. Man asked for my husband, I told him he wasn't available and asked to take a message. He said his name was Nelson Carter (Indian accent) and to have him call the U.S. treasury back. I told him "in the United States the treasury doesn't make collections over the phone they'd swnd a letter. Good luck with that." I then hung up. I was amused when the caller id showed the same number so I answers it. The same guy tells me the cops are coming and to get our Crimson lawyer ready. I laughed and said I don't think so.  So much fun getting a rise out of the caller. If they're going to wate my time in going to waste theirs.

I had a message left on my voice mail -- same as others have described.  Male with an Indian accent. (I could hear others speaking in the background.) He was from the department of legal affairs-- or some such.  I or my attorney must call back immediately.  I have had a similar call several months ago.  Obvious scam for the unsuspecting and venerable.

These are criminal extortionists operating in overseas boiler rooms using VOIP to alter their identities and locations and out of the reach of US law enforcement.

If someone calls saying he's an IRS agent and demands that you send money immediately, hang up.
It's a phone scam.In fact, it tops the IRS "Dirty Dozen" list of tax scams this year, and it's been surging in recent months, the agency said Thursday.

The Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration (TIGTA), which oversees the IRS, has received reports of 290,000 scam calls since October 2013 and said nearly 3,000 victims have been swindled out of $14 million so far.

By altering their caller ID number to make it look like they're calling from an IRS office, these scammers often threaten vulnerable people like the elderly and new immigrants with things like arrest, deportation or the loss of their driver's license if they don't pay immediately for money purportedly owed.

Often leaving messages that say it's "urgent" you call them back, the scammers use common names and sometimes say they are from the IRS Criminal Division. They may even claim to know the last four digits of your Social Security number and send follow-up emails that appear to be from the IRS, TIGTA said.

They often demand that payments be made by prepaid debit card.

Once they make their threats, the scammers have been known to call back and again disguise their caller ID so it appears they are calling from the police department or the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV).

Or sometimes when they call, they may say you have a refund due and ask you to provide personal information so you can claim it.

The real IRS will usually contact you by regular mail first, if it needs to contact you at all. And the agency never demands immediate payment by phone or asks for credit card or debit numbers if they do call. It also never asks for personal or financial information by email, text or social media.

If you get what you suspect is a scam call, report it to TIGTA through its Web site or call 800-366-4484.

I found a call on my machine (4/6/2015), supposely from the Dept. of Legal Affairs, US Treasury.

Heavy accent, lots of noise in the background.  Obviously a scam to get money and/or information.  They used my nickname "Ly," which does not appear on any legal documents.
