Recieved a call from 770-894-4718 this morning. When answered no one answered and call went dead. When I called the number right back (within 5 seconds) I get a recording that the number is disconnected. How can that be???? I have just connected my home number w/in 3 weeks now (Comcast digital). Have already sub'd it on the do-not-call listing due to repeated telemarketers calling at all hours but was told it takes a few weeks to be activated.

I just read this from Verizon
      by Chloe Albanesius

Verizon Wireless on Wednesday filed a lawsuit against fraudulent telemarketers who target wireless customers with promises of extended car warranties.

Since January 2008, more than 2 million Verizon Wireless customers have received calls from numbers starting with 281, 614, 801, and 562 area codes, the company said.

Those who answer their phones hear a pre-recorded voice that tells them their car warranties are about to expire, and requests that they press 1 for more information. They are then directed to an operator who asks them for the make and model of the car, but if callers ask questions, the call is disconnected.

Customers who miss the call and dial the number in their missed call log are greeted with a non-working number message.

Verizon alleges that the telemarketers are using "spoofing" techniques to mask the origin of their call, and a violation of the Federal Telephone Consumer Protection Act, which bans auto-dialer calls to cell phones, as well as state fraud and privacy laws.

"Telemarketers are using increasingly sophisticated methods, such as illegal autodialing, to harass our customers," Steven E. Zipperstein, vice president and general counsel of Verizon Wireless, said in a statement. "Whatever the method, these unlawful telemarketing calls are an annoyance to our customers and invade their privacy, and we will continue to use every weapon in our legal arsenal to stop this activity and protect our customers."

Verizon is looking to uncover the identities of the callers with its lawsuit.

Chloe and several other responders are exactly right.  Whatever entity or entities that are doing this are violating federal law.

REPORT THE CALLS TO THE FEDERAL COMMUNICATIONS COMMISSION AT
        WWW.FCC.GOV.

They have a complaint section.  You can fill everything out online.  The bastards that do answer the phone just hang up on me even when I politely ask them to remove my number from their systems.

I've received at least 30 calls from these bastards.
        Other numbers they've used:

        570-596-4591
        and others

Hello, I also have received calls from 770-894-4718.  Three times now.  And each time it is a voice recorded message where a male voice notifies that "I still have time to renew my car insurance."  (I don't even OWN A CAR!)  It doesn't state a company and when I call back, I am told the number is disconnected.

This is costing me minutes!  And it needs to stop!  How can I solve the problem?  Anyone?

Also receiving phone calls for this 'second notice regarding extending my car warranty.'  This is the first time it's used this number.  All other times it's called as "Private."  Sprint customer.  Has called about seven times now for me.

I also have received a call from 770-894-4718 with the "you still have time to renew your car warranty" message. This time, I pressed "1" to be connected (probably a mistake on my part) -- when the male operator answered with "Can I have the make and model of your vehicle?" and I said "Who ARE you?", I was immediately hung up on.

I have received similar calls like this recently, both on my personal cell and business desk phones.  Other posts say scams like these originate internationally, which is why the number is "disconnected" when you try to call back.

Ditto.  I have received this call 4 times and it's annoying as it's to my work number!  I hit 0 trying to speak to someone and no one was there.  I called the number and it's disconnected.

Received telemarketing call, on a business line, when expecting another call.  Auto warranty recording, hung up as soon as it was recognized.  Called back to ask for calls to stop, and got "disconnected" recording. Same call again the next day.  Reported to FCC.  Have been getting similar calls every so often from different numbers.  Time to jump on this and put an end to it.
