The real police don't call people at random for money.  If that is the case no doubt a scam.  I did not answer.

Made the mistake of picking up.

Some guy called about state troopers (I think) fund raising money. They wanted to send a badge/package to my address (was going to ask for it) in return for a donation or something.

Felt fishy/sounded fishy. Kind of a spam number as well.

Caller said he was from Illinois Police (I think he said State Police). Anyway 773 is a Chicago Area Code. Caller asked if he could mail a packet to me for donation and that the minimum donation was $15 to cover their cost to send packet.  Caller said they are not a charity so I cannot claim the cost on my tax return. He seemed sincere but I am always cautious of scams. I gave him an address to mail to (not my home address - just in case a scam). He asked my last name only - which I gave him a hybrid of a name - in case this is a scam. Once the materials come I will make a determination. I would rather contact the State Police directly and donate to them, not by them calling me.

They are not a charity BUT they  want a donation???  That seems very strange!!  Check with your state law enforcement.  They can tell you if this is a scam or not.  Many police departments do NOT solicit funds!

    - Police wanting donations. It seemed  legitimate. I didn't experience any pressure. When I told him I didn't have the amount of money they were looking for, he was willing to try next year with a call.

Telephoning is a relatively expensive way for a charity to ask for donations.  Even a legitimate charity the telemarketing firm hired to make the calls often keeps more than 50% of every donation to cover fund raising costs.  For charities with "fire department", "police", or "sheriff" in the name the telemarketing boiler room often keeps more than 95% of the donations.  Never donate to any charity because they called you and asked for money.  If you like the charity find a snail-mail address for them and mail them a check.

They will call again, but they won't wait a year.  They probably won't wait a week.  They'll drive you crazy with calls begging for money. Don't answer the calls.  Block the phone number.

Well just some food for thought.. if you google the number and it doesn't attach to anything but non-solicited call sites (like this one).. likely a scam.  If it were state police.. it seems to me it would come up in a search.  Just sayin..........

Multiple calls from this and unknown numbers with no messages left. When I have answered there was no one there except once when someone asked for someone else in the family saying they had a survey.
