Called offering roofing services. Got angry when I told him we were on the Do Not Call List. Caller refused to identify himself or his business name (oh, that sounds legit, right?) but Caller ID said "Openwave".

Finally picked up one of these calls from Openwave, couldn't take the constant calling and hang up anymore. I didn't say hello, waited for them to respond. The caller knew me by name and said they would be on my street the next day doing "free" roof inspections due to recent hail in our area for insurance companies. Upon further questioning, he named one insurance company they were performing these inspections for, which I said asked what company are you representing for me. He started to back pedal and say that one insurance company was an example. Mentioned several times it was free. Come on, nothing is free, what is the catch.

I kindly said, I will pass on your free inspection, thank you for calling, and remove me from your call list. He was taken back and didn't know how to respond. The last I heard as I hung up the call was, uh oh, uh. Must not have been on his script for how to handle that type of NO answer.

We will see if they continue to call. Next time it will not be as pleasant experience for the caller.

Sounds like the rep was caught in scripted lies, which violate the Telemarketing Sales Rule. The magic phrase is NOT ''take me off'' or "remove my name", but ''Add this number to your Do Not Call list''. Telemarketers must obey no-call demands and maintain a scrub list. The worst frauds don't bother, thus inviting lawsuits.

We have registered several times to the "do not call list". Really does not make a difference.

Well, it won't make a difference to illegal, scam callers! It just stops legitimate telemarketers. One valuable purpose it serves well is that it tells you anyone who *does* call is a law breaker and not to be trusted.
