- tS replies to tS| 1 replyUpdate to previous post: I called the Capital One 1-800-955-7070 from their web site and this was a legitimate notification of potential fraud. Be careful, though. There are always potential scammers out there.
- DianaI received call today and a man stated he worked for Capitalone and wanted to verify some info regarding my credit card application, I told him I've never applied Capitalone credit card. The man told me hold a moment then lost connection. Be careful, this crimal action is still going on.
- dr| 10 repliesThree calls leaving messages purporting to be from Capital One Fraud Department. Calls from Emmanuel and Tamika wanting a return call to identify my phone number when call is returned. Calls on April 8-9. Never returned calls.
- pg| 3 repliescall received from 804 area code left message asking me to return call to an (800) with long extension, they then started asking me to verify questions, but i was skeptical and asked how i knew they were capitol one. she told me to call the # on the back of my card, and i could not find a fraud department.
- Caller: capitol one
- pg replies to pg| 1 replyjust posted above and found out it is a legitimate #.
- Gregg replies to dr| 9 repliesI also got a "Freud" call from someone claiming to be Capital One, at the same number. It sounded WAY suspicious to me, so I called the number on the back of my card, who confirmed it was legit. Still seems very odd to me though.......
- TexThey seemed to have branched into business letters. I received a letter stating someone may have opened an account in my name and to contact 800-239-7054. I did not call.
- Deb replies to Gregg| 1 replyI received 2 calls and a letter with this number. I called Cap One through the # listed on the website and was told there was no account open in my name. I gave her the 800 # listed on the letter and left in the phone messages and after looking it up, she said that number was not affiliated with Cap One. You said when you called they told you it was legit...what did they do about it?
- Deb replies to DebUpdated the post my prior post. I noticed on the letter there was an account number listed. I called Cap One again with this acct #, they asked for the last 4 digits of my social, that i felt fine giving, and then the representative recited the rest of my social saying that is what was listed for the account. He asked what state I lived in, I said Fl, and he continued to list a Miami address. I don't live in Miami. So, they are filing a fraud report. This all just seems strange to me...I put a fraud alert on my credit report just in case.
- fishie| 1 replyi received 3 (count 'em, three!) letters in the same day stating to call this number. when i called capital one, they can't find my info (BECAUSE I DON'T HAVE AN ACCOUNT, hello?).
the envelope had the capital one logo, but the letters did not have colored letterhead, as i would expect OFFICIAL letters to have. guess it cost too much for criminals to pay.
come to find out, there were two accounts opened with my ssn in a different name. interesting. - Rose in Las Vegas.| 2 repliesI got a voice message for me to call the Capital One fraud department at 1-800-239-7054 on Nov. 14, 2008. I called the number the following morning. A girl answered with a "hello?" like someone answering a regular home phone. The girl asked for my name, and the number of the credit card I had just received and said the number I read was not the one shown in their records. I did have another existing card so I thought that it could have been that older account that she was seeing. She then asked for the last 4-digits of my social security, which I did, and confirmed that the new number of the card I had just received was indeed on file, then asked for me to read the numbers on the back of the card. I've felt suspicious and uncomfortable about the conversation, especially when there was loud conversation noises in the background like a call center would. My previous experience with talking with someone at a credit card fraud department had always been a very quiet conversation that felt very private. At this point I refused to give the girl the numbers she asked for and I just told her I'd call Capital one using the number on the back of my card instead.
- MM replies to Rose in Las Vegas.I received the same call this morning. "Shannon" from Capital One's fraud department called my cell (which I didn't answer) and left a message requesting a call back asap. The number on Caller ID was from the 804 area code and different than the 1-800 number she left. I called the first number, and a message came on saying it was an invalid number at Capital One. I called the 1-800-239-7054 number that was left on the message and was connected to Capital One's fraud department. The person immediately asked me for my 16-digit account number, I said I was uncomfortable giving that out given that the call was solicited from me, and the woman said I should call the number on the back of my card and they would route me to the fraud department. I called the number on the back, asked to be transferred to the fraud department, and the very nice man at the fraud department said 1-800-239-7054 is NOT a Capital One number. I filed a report with them, filed an online report with the FBi ...
- Irritated in PA| 2 repliesI just got a call to my cell phone # tonight (didn't recognize the # so didn't answer). The message from a "Ralph" said that he was calling from Capital One and that it wasn't a Sales Call and for me to call back ASAP at 800-239-7054. I called the 800# left and was immediately asked for my 16-digit account number. I told them I just wanted to know why a "Ralph" was calling me and they said they needed my credit card # to pull it up.
Something didn't sound right at all - especially since I NEVER gave my cell phone # to Capital One for my account. I also worked for a credit card company credit center 15 years ago and I knew that they didn't need my account # to look anything up if I didn't feel comfortable giving it. After persistence from this girl, I just told her that I would call back.
I immediately called the # on the back of my card and spoke with a very nice man at the REAL Capital One. He could not find 800-239-7054 at all for one of the Capital One phone #'s. He said that it was very smart to NOT give out any information. He also gave me the phone # to Better Business Bureau to report this: 804-648-0016.
Hopefully others will not give into this potential scam!- Caller: Scammer!
- dimples2000| 3 repliesReceived a call from (800)427-9428 (I got this # through *69) the caller identified themselves as "customer protection" from capital one. They gave the name of someone I know as the cardholder, but that person has never lived here. I called the (800)955-7070 fraud dept number on the capital one website. They had no record of someone calling my number. They did however identify the calling number as the main fraud department and the call back number left (800)239-7054 as the number of a fraud specialist. Crystal from the fraud dept, to whom I was speaking, asked for my social security number to verify none was trying to open an account in my name. I told her I would not provide this. Anyone have any idea what is going on? Tomorrow I am handing this all over to the state's attorney.

- Lia replies to dimples2000| 2 replies800-239-7054 IS A LEGIT FRAUD PHONE NUMBER for the Capital One Fraud Dept. Their main Fraud Dept number is 800-427-9428, but this is a LEGIT number too. I called Capital One Customer Service and the Main Fraud number and they ran the 800-239-7054 number in their system and it is a legit number.
I also had someone commit credit card fraud and it was fixed via the 800-239-7054 number and reflected through the Customer Service number later on. You can trust the 800-239-7054 number. It's just a different dept of the Fraud Dept - a higher level. - Cathy| 1 replyI just got a very muffled message on my home phone at 7pm on a Friday from 1-800-427-9428 asking me to call 1-800-239-7054 and to reference a number (that they did not leave on the message), it sounded like they said it was a doctors office. If it's anything to do with Capital One, I was approved for a credit card 3 days ago, and already received a call from capital one on my cell phone asking me to verify that I received a message to let me know to expect my 'welcome package' in 7-10 business days. Is this security gone mad? Or has someone already stolen my info from a CC approval from only 3 days ago? - if so they need to vet their staff. I'm waiting to see if they call back.
- sam replies to Lia| 1 replyMy brother received three phone calls "Capital One Fraud Department" They left a message for me to call them @ 800-239-7054. I did recently apply for a capital one credit card last week and received an approval letter. I never gave my brother's telephone number! How did they get my brother's number and leave a message for me? We live in different states. I called today (feb 22) and a man in a foreign accent asked for my credit card number without asking any other questions. Doesn't seem legit but I called the number on my card and they verify the above number as legit
