I was called by "National Readers' Service" (NRS)on April 24, 2008. The young woman on the line asked me if I had been receiving my magazines intact because other clients in my area had been complaining about damage.
I have an account with another magazine marketer.  There have been no problems there, but I thought that the contract period for my payments was about over. Since I didn't have my contract in front of me I assumed this was the same group that I had contracted to and am happy with. I was told that I was only a little past the half way point of my contract but that they could drop about $11 from my payment and  require payment only every other month. Without making myself more foolish than I feel, let me say I bought it... Until the original company I contracted called to say that they had been blocked from withdrawing the last payment on my contract from my account.
Anyway, Ive gotten satisfaction with the help of my bank and my original magazine company.  NRS immediately promised a refund upon my call and exposition of the story.

I was called by "National Readers' Service" (NRS)on Feburary 24, 2009. from this number 1 612 605 2419 The young woman named lisa on the line asked me if I had been receiving my magazines intact because other clients in my area had been complaining about damage.
I have an account with another magazine marketer. I have paid off the whole thing after getting my brother to go look at the paper work for me. basically after talking to lisa they sent me to the supervisor just to see if the lady what nice on the phone. the supervisor starts off with those questions then talked about the account i have he said i have 3 years left on the acount and I owed money $1,400.00 right now. I was like no I don't i haven't made a payment in like 2 years. he just goes well your not makeing payments right now cause your on a grace peroid. then he goes into this offers since i made all my payments on time i'm a prestige customer and i can get discount of $10 off my payment and since i'm not at home i couldn't look at the info about my magazines subscription.
so well if i do owe and i missed something on the paperwork i had might as well get it for less money. well basically it seem like they trick you in to renewing for more years since i had one more year left and I paid the whole thing off. so now i called the number of which the lady called me on no answer the number of the company for my magazines busy every hour of the day and now i got a $5 dollar authorization on my bank statement which had this number and i call that which is busy every hour of the day to. so now im disputing this with the bank. so if you get called by this number 1-800-304-8567 and 1-612-605-2419 don't accept anything there just scamming you.

I got a call from them and I'm freaking out. I stupidly gave them my card information (my fiance's gonna kill me). They called and said that I would be put into a million dollar sweepstakes. Then they talked about a magazine subscription they had for me and a $500 gas card. I told the guy I didn't want it, but he said "Theresa, you are getting an awesome discount! $4.95 for 7 magazines?! Come on! NO one gets THAT!" So I went with it. I kept asking how I could cancel it if I wanted and he assured me that I could. He said I'd have to pay for 24 months and get the next 24 free.

After I got off the phone, I looked them up online and found all of this scam information. I've called back three times to cancel, but they always say that I won't be in the system until Tuesday and to call then. I'm really worried! They swear that they aren't the same company that is scamming people and that there are many businesses known as the National Reader's Service.

I'm just praying that it's not the same scam. I got scammed almost a year ago at the same time by someone saying I'd won a free cruise. I lost $200.00 to that. I can't afford another scam. I'm getting married on Novemeber 14th.

    :(

It is not unusual for magazine scam companies to do this. The legality of recorded telephone contracts and cancellation rights evidently vary by state, but do not be discouraged. Given the deceptive means by which this "contract" was made it is very likely that you can get a refund and this account cancelled. Here are my suggestions:

Contact the company and attempt to resolve issues to your satisfaction. If you have already unsuccessfully attempted to resolve your dispute with this company, file a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission. Complaints may be filed VERY easily by telephone at 1-877-FTC-HELP.

If they have been unreceptive in previous contacts, a conversation similar to what follows may increase your likelihood of success. There are certainly more possiblities to include, but here's a list to start with. Be determined, but do not be distracted by losing your temper. Say what you mean, mean what you say, and then do what you said!!

Do not tell them you will follow this course of action unless they comply with your wishes (that's blackmail). This is your plan regardless, and you are simply notifying them of that fact.

"I am informing you of my intentions to:

    1. File a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission (Or inform them that complaint has already been filed).
    2. File a complaint with the National Consumers League.
    3. File a complaint with the Better Business Bureau.
    4. Contact my Bank or Credit Card Company regarding reversing charges.
    5. Contact my local consumer protection agency to arbitrate an agreement on my behalf.
    5. File official complaints or send letters detailing my entire experiences with your company to the The Attorneys General in both your state of operations and my state of residence.
    6. E-mail a consumer complaint to the Magazine Publishers of America.
    7. Contact an Attorney specializing in consumer law.”

Inform them that you expect to receive written confirmation of cancellation or any other agreements within 10 business days. Keep records of all contact with this company.

Follow through on complaints especially to the Federal Trade Commission and the Attorneys General. Official investigations make their ability to do this type of business more difficult!

Convenient complaint submission links and details of my experience with National Readers Service can be found here www.theNRSscam.blogspot.com

    Best of luck to you,

This is a SCAM! I recieved a call from them last night & they told me if I didn't pay them they would report it to my credit report. I do recieve magazines but I thought I had paid for them in full. The lady convinced me to pay by my Visa check card & when I hung up with her I didn't feel right about it so I called the magazine company directly & they told me I did not owe ANY $ & that it is a scam!! Luckily, they only put through $5 so I closed my Visa down. DO NOT GIVE THEM ANY INFO!!!! The lady gave me a 800# to call & cancel it wss.....800-304-8567

HUGE SCAM that will cost you.  They did the same thing to me about 5 years ago. Then I got a charge on my credit card I don't even use anymore.  When I called they said it was an automatic renewal.  I told them I was never told of a renewal and did not receive notification by mail and in fact had not heard from them for 5 years. Thankfully she cancelled the renewal and credited my account.

Haven't heard from these people for approx. 2 years and this morning there's a pending WD on my account. I've tried calling the number that the bank said is attached to the transaction and no one is answering. States it's customer service and the hours are 9 - 6 yet no one picks up. Bank says they can't stop the transaction from going thru, I'll have to call back after it's posted to request a refund and a stop WD's from these people. Rip Off and ridiculous.

You can cancel and then go to the three credit boards and have a line put on your report about this company.
Also make a report to your Attorney General of your State, the BBB, and the FBI because they are all out of state.

That is the same company. Just cancel you credit card.  It's better to have a slightly lower credit score than no money whatsoever.

yeah...i got caught up with this as well...i'm not sure what i was thinking...i got kinda nervous when they asked me for my social secutiry number too and refused to give it to the lady...so yeah i stupidly gave them my debit card...after i got off the phone i started doing the math and realized that according to them i'd be paying close to 1500 bucks for magazines...seems pretty out there so i looked them up...and then i saw they were a scam...during the called i asked if there was any way to cancel the service and that i didnt want it and she got snippy and said there was some sort of buinding contract and then she said she'd lower the rate and i once again asked what i can do to cancel and got the same answer...so after i looked into it i called right back and told them to cancel it...to my surprise the lady showed no hisitation to cancel...i asked if i was charged and she said there might be a 5 dollar verification charge but nothing was fully charge...i also told her to lose my debit information cause i had just called and had it cancelled...they said they cancelled...let's see if they did...if not i honestly dont care...and if they call me again i'll tell them my lawyer will be calling them back :-)

Okay we keep receiving calls saying they are the national reading something (NRS) I don't have any kind of subscription to a magazine. My husband never gives me the phone because he's usually at work when they call. The lady speaks clear English and is bluntly rude & hangs up the phone when he offers to leave a message! The number comes up unknown.  Didn't know if there was a real NRS or is it all a scam. Want to make sure I'm not missing something!

I just settled things with another magazine i was having trouble with and a few months later this magazine company called me telling me that I didn't actually cancel the account that it was merely on postpone. It had been several months later and I had forgotten the name of the magazine so I thought they were referring to that one.

I got the same, people in the area said they never received any magazines and some were damaged and so on and so on. I never received any magazines before and that was the main reason why I had so much trouble before. Like an idiot I fell for the scam. They said it they had a special offer three months only for $50 or so dollars and then I could easily cancel. I took it.

It never came and then they charged me in the end of the month. I called again, but this time I didn't get the manager. I talked to some woman who quickly and easily gave me a refund and cancelled my account supposedly. I received a refund very quickly, but something just didn't feel right. I had called twice before and always gotten the manager who just wouldn't cancel my account and this woman did it within seconds.

I have proof of the charge and refund. However, a few months later magazines started coming in. Worse part is that they aren't even ones I like. But still, I am not getting charged for them. I didn't like it and went to my bank. I have a visa checkcard through them.

They said they couldn't change my account number until they try charging me again. Then it would cost me about $30 to do that. I trust my bank and they had backed me up the last time I had trouble. I couldn't get into my online banking account because I forgotten the password and it kept locking me out.

But I now had the number, but the name of the company does not show simply "KS" whatever that means. I google the number and found this place and realize how I wasn't the only one. After reading others' experience I feel that mine is very trivial. I'm not sure whether to call them or not, but the magazines I keep getting are kinda scandalous and there are children often at our house. I've been collecting them so I could send them back, but they don't have a return address.

I'm praying this doesn't come back to haunt me and that if it does I have enough proof to show that I wasn't charged for them. All the comfort I have is from my bank which now has a free legal services for their customers.
