- sandyI knew it was a scam, but I called because I was curious. Blocked my number and called 1-800-437-5681, was transferred to someone in India. They wanted my SSN. I didn't give any info out and just hung up.

- Paul| 1 replySame as other report above.
Received message claiming to be from Paypal, asked me to call this number back to confirm charges. Called paypal direct from number on their website, and they have no record of calling me. Didn't call number back - KateSame as above callers. but I did call it back. It was automated with no way to speak to anyone, so I hung up. I reported the number to Paypal.
- NancyReceived call from "Paypal" wanting me to return a call to this number and when I did they said "card member services". It was all automated wanting the last 4 digits of my card. They already knew the number I was calling from and what my name was on the card. They wanted to verify several transactions that were on my debit card. I was worried that they knew too much about my paypal debit card, so I hung up and called paypal debit security dept at 1.800.830.8574. She said it was a company in the Phillipines that is First Data and they are contracted by Paypal. I had ordered 3 sample items from a NEWACAISUPREME 8884457469 KN and ACAIBERRYTEAPLUS 8669384832 KN and WEB ACCESS 866-2796513 IA and those were the items in question, each for $5.95. I looked the companies up on line and they are very questionable in their activities. They start billing people right away for almost 100 dollars on each item and you have no say so. The Paypal security dept. put a report on my card for it being compromised and I had to call customer service and was issued a new number within minutes. I hope this helps someone else.

- westronicsI am an eBay powerseller, and use the Paypal card commonly. I started using Stamps.com and volume of transactions was pretty high (They only allow $250 maximum in your account and I go through about 120k/year in postage). It was out of the norm for my account, and I'm sure that is why it was flagged.
I was phoned by the rep, who did sound suspicious, and why I googled the number. I just said I was out of the office before giving any information. Called it back, was asked to verify:
Last 4 of card number (No problem, even if not legit, nothing can be done with this)
I was told the name on the card by the automated system, and followed through verifying 5 transactions - 4 for stamps.com purchases, 1 for a "discount store purchase" which I identified as the charge I placed yesterday from Sam's Club.
If you get asked to give a full social, I would certainly not give it. This is how Paypal handles things, and I have dealt with it for a few years. They must have outsourced this in the recent years though, or I only ever got other reps that spoke very wonderful English previously.
In general, I would say this is legitimate, but if you have any doubt at all - Always go with your gut, and certainly don't give out any real information to anyone.- Call type: Unwanted
- bcarnSame here. Got the call and I will just call Paypal directly, not the number they gave me.
- StryderKCReceived a message on my phone asking me to call 800-437-5681 (computer generated voice). I called the PayPal main number and after several transfers I finally reached a lady saying that there was a note on my account that a message was left to verify a purchase. She took care of it for me.

- J Nosame type of call... Wanting to verify paypal.
- Gary C. replies to PaulI received a call stating that PayPal security wanted to verify account activity. I logged into my account to verify. Saw no problems with account ... used "Contact us" link to call PayPal. PayPal rep was very nice ... I explained situation and gave call back number that was left in my voice mail. Rep stated that (800) 437-5681 was a valid telephone number, but took care of everything without asking for any "Personal" information. The website generates a webpage pin that is valid for 1 hour ... that is the only info they asked me to provide ... other than verifying that I had use a "Secure" card to make a purchase ... they provided the customer name and date. I found no problems with the way PayPal handled this situation.
- Anna MacI received a call from this company DEMANDING to speak to my husband about his "Paypal card" and a problem associated with it. I do all of the paypal activity in this household and I told the person this and they just told me, this is referring their Paypal card.
"What card?" I asked and they replied
"The card with the Logo on it"
-we do not have a paypal card! - and I told the women this and she was somewhat rude...
"I know more about these "cards" than he would - but whatever..." and she just said
"GIVE HIM THIS MESSAGE AND TELL HIM WE CALLED AND TO CALL US BACK AS SOON AS POSSIBLE ABOUT THIS CARD - PHONE # is 1-800-437-5681"
What a scam - I looked up PAypal's customer support # and it's a 1-888#, not a 1-800 #.
DO NOT GIVE THESE PEOPLE YOUR INFORMATION!! WHen you return the call they will start asking for it! - Garry 7This IS a legitimate number.
I don't know why so many are becoming irate over this.
PayPal probably out-sources their help lines and billing to India companies. THAT's why your getting "someone from India"
I reiterate ... this is a legit phone number.
I just got off the phone with an nice Indian woman and all she wanted was for me to verify that I authorized a payment for $480 to Easton Utilities.
No scammer would have known that I made an online payment via PayPal to my local utilities company.
At first the automated system DID want the last four of my credit card (I have 2 listed and one is no longer valid). I put the last four of the now invalid credit card and when the system couldn't find any record that's when I was connected to the woman.- Caller: PayPal Security

- Mary| 1 replyGot a call from 800-437-5681. Claims to be from Pay Pal. Stated they wanted to talk to me about the transactions on my debit card, there are no transactions on my card, so I did not call back.

- Steve Spence replies to MaryI got the message asking me to call back. I did, but did not give my last 4 digits of my card #. Got a live body who asked me for my name and phone number. They then rattled off three recent transactions I made and asked me if those were legitimate. I said yes, and they thanked me. and that was it. This is legit.
- KDawgI received a message having me call this number back about a charge made on my 1st Financial Bank card. I don't think pay pal and 1st Financial would be the same exact number. But I have to say... I am sure a lot of people have been scared and went ahead and called the number giving away all their information. Thanks to whoever started this, you saved me from making a big mistake.

- BlueNote662I got the message too, but mine had my card issuer's name instead of "paypal" in the message. I called my bank, who confirmed they are outsourcing their verification services. I pointed out to them that this fact (and phone #) should be prominent on their website, too much phishing in the world these days. But it DID turn out to be legit. Good thing I called back, they were about to shut my card off for not returning their calls.

- WallygatorIt was a computer generated voice message that wanted me to call about the recent use of my bank debit card. I don't have a debit card with that particular bank. Did not call the number back.
- anonymousI got a call from this number wanting to verify information on my Chevy Chase Bank account. asking me to call 1-800-437-5681.
- anonymousI also got a call wanting to ask about strange transactions on my Chevy Chase Bank account. I went to Chevy Chase's website and got the real contact number. And in fact, a couple strange transactions seem to have occurred in the last two days. Even if the number isn't legitimate, it's fortunate I got that call. Otherwise, I wouldn't have looked so closely at my account!
- ~~~Got a message on my phone asking me to call this number about some transactions on my 1st Financial credit card. Only asked for my name and phone number, which they already had in the message, and the last 4 digits of the card. They confirmed my mailing address and asked about some purchases that I didn't make. They said they were shutting down my card and would mail a new one shortly.
Overall seemed pretty legit to me, but I guess I'll see if I get a new card.- Caller: Card Services

- anonymousSame as above, I got a message asking me to call this number about some transactions on my 1st Financial debit card (clue #1; I don't have a debit card through 1FB). I didn't call back and instead Google'd to find this page.
I will call 1FB tomorrow however to check on this.
