i RECEIVED A LETTER IN THE MAIL YESTERDAY STATING THAT SOMEONE WAS TRYING TO OPEN AN AT&T PHONE ACCOUNT IN MY NAME IN DETROIT MICHIGAN AND THEY WANTED TO VERIFY. I CALLED THEM AND TOLD THEM THAT I HAD NOT AUTHORIZED THIS BUT THAT ALSO I WAS A FEDERAL LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICER WITH FRAUD ALERT AND I WOULD BE TURNING IT OVER TO THE AUTHORITIES.  I ALSO ASKED ANUMBER OF QUESTIONS.  THE ENVELOPE LOOKED LIKE IT WAS FROM AT&T BECAUSE THE COMPANY LOGO WAS IN COLOR.  BUT INSIDE THE LETTER IT LOOKED AS IF SOMEONE HAD PHOTO COPIED IT.  I THINK IT WAS A SCAM.  THEY SAID THERE WAS A BALANCE OF 87.99 DOLLARS ON THE ACCOUNT BUT THEY WOULD SEND A LETTER SAYING THAT I HAD NO RESPONSIBILTY FOR THE CHARGES AND THAT THEY COULD NOT GIVE ME THE ADDRESS OF THE PERSON USING MY NAME BUT THEY COULD GIVE IT TO THE AUTHORITIES.  I CALLED THIS NUMBER SEVERAL TIMES, AND TO MY AMAZEMENT THE SAME PERSON PICKED UP EVERYTIME.  SHE STATED HER NAME WAS KIM BRYANT.  I ASKED FOR HER SUPERVISOR BECAUSE SHE WOULD NOT GIVE ME HER LAST NAME OR HER REP ID NUMBER SHE PUT ME ON HOLD AND CAME BACK AND GAVE ME HER LAST NAME BUT NOT HER ID NUMBER.  THIS LET ME KNOW THIS IS A SCAM.  THEY ARE PRETENDING TO BE AT&T.  KIM STATED AFTER I TOLD HER THAT I WOULD TURNTHIS OVER TO THE FBI AND SHE WOULD BE CONTACTED THAT HER SUPERVISOR CANDY HAD RESOLVED THE PROBLEM AND THEY WOULD SEND A LETTER OF RESOLVE IN THE MAIL ASAP.  GO FIGURE.

A relative just received a letter in the mail, same as Machelle, above, stating that someone was trying to request service in his name. When he opened the envelope, it looked suspecious; even more so when they said that the he would be prompted for information authenticating his identify to "AT&T personnel". That was the clincher. It was clear that they were phishing.
I decided to look up the sender - AT&T Global Fraud Management Organization, and could not find anything near that name on the internet. Then, I saw this page. Your incident was a year ago, and now, one year later, they are still at it.
I will be forwarding the letter to the justice department fraud unit and fcc, as well as to the phone company. Hopefully, others will do the same before too many people get scammed.

I got a letter like this as well, my address with a business name and a different phone # stating that "the credit information you provided us when you established your  business telephone service" and then it never finishes the sentence. There is even a double space between "your" and "business"

Is anyone reporting this to AT&T or to some kind of fraud hotline?

My daughter recieved this notice in the mail today. Only it was supposedly someone in Bakersfield trying to get a phone in her name. She actually called the number and she hung up on it. She told me the man in the recording sounded, "like a stoner", lol. I told her to call 611 ( we have AT&T) and ask them about it. The gal from AT&T told her that the number given in the letter was not one of their numbers. She even put my daughter on hold and called the number. She questioned the "agent". She even asked the woman, "What if someone opens up a phone account in my name, what will you do?", the gal from AT&T told my daughter that the "agent" on the other end kept answering, "I don't know.", to all of her questions. WTF? Just wanted to let people that these [***] are still trying this scam.

Fell for it!  Another number, same scam.

I fell for this phishing scam back in Dec 09.  Today I received two more letters, but this time, it just says, I had opened accounts in Oakland, CA, and if I didn't authorize the new service to call 1-866-718-2011, otherwise disregard the letter.

The number rang through to a so-called, "AT&T Identity Center"
It had an official sounding options menu but without an operator option.  When I don't select any option, it hung up almost immediately.

Here it is Feb 2010 and I got a letter just like the ones in the string above.  I too was suspicious and suspect a fraud.  I contacted AT&T. I'm still waiting to hear back from AT&T about this letter. BTW my letter said someone from L.A. was trying to open an account in my name.

It is not an AT&T fraud Hotline. It is a phishing scam. I am on the phone with the real AT&T now to get this cleared up.

I have spoken with AT&T after viewing my credit report and seeing I had a debt in collection. I called the collection agency and AT&T both and this was the # I was given.

So long story short, 866-718-2011  & 800-438-5678 are valid AT&T Fraud Dept. number. I'm not sure why anyone is posting that it is a fraud.

Working in a call center, if at anytime you question the telephone # on any document you receive, go to the companies official website, call the customer service # listed and get transferred. It may take 20 minutes longer, but I'd rather 20 minutes longer than months of fighting a fraudulent charge.

800-438-5678 is the Global Fraud Managament for AT&T
866-718-2011 is the Theft of identity for AT&T

If you got a letter and don't want to respond then DON'T. Let the person who set up service under your name and social run up thousands of dollars in your good name after all WHO CARES right. Instead of just calling and taking care of the situation IGNORE IT. Wait till you go to buy a house or car or something like that and then get told you have $1000's of dollars in phone charges that are'nt yours and then I bet you call no matter what this site says. HA HA you fool. You will wish you had called and stopped it immediately whe you got the letter in the first place then. So go ahead, ignore it. Enjoy your good credit while you can and forgive AT&T for trying to do their job in proctecting you.

Wow, now I am confused. I  also got a similar letter referring to OAKLAND, CA, as the place where tha fraud was attempted. My letter came from AT&T GLOBAL FRAUD MANAGEMENT "ORGANIZATION".
The word organization sounds phoney. Anyway, I have id theft protection with IDENTITY GUARD.

I would think that At&t would CALL from their fraud dept on these type of matters. Soooooooooo
to call or not to call................
