Got post card saying Notice of parcel claim. It is a beautiful necklace worth 50.00 I would pay ship fee of $11.95 I told them to keep it and through the card in garbage.

This is not a scam, per say, but pretty close. In the old days they would ship you a package C.O.D., usually around $20. When you opened it you'd find pencils with your name on them. This is an updated version. The company probably has about $4. tied up in this, so an $8.00 profit on every nibble. Not bad, in a dishonest sort of way. Shredder ahoy!

Any communication by US mails which appears to be fraudulent should be taken down to the US post office so that the postal inspectors can take a look at it.  Could be mail fraud.

It is absolutely a scam.  This same scam happened probably 25-30 years ago.  I knew a person who paid the fee and received crappy costume jewelry....the postcard says the jewelry is valued at $50 but in reality it is something you could get from a gumball machine.  So tell me Badge714, how is this not a scam???

Got the postcard today, Notice of Parcel Claim, a parcel with contents jewelry with original value $50, from United Merchandise Clearinghouse, UMC. I am to call 800-461-3492 within 7 days and pay the $11.95 processing and delivery fee for the prepaid item, that can only be paid by telephone and only with a Visa or MasterCard. Oh and this postcard is my only notification. Address on front of card says UMC, PO Box 66749, Falmouth, ME 04105 but postage area says Wichita, KS, Permit #1148.  I'm not so sure this ever went through the post office though because there was no postage cancellation stamp and it was the only piece of mail in our box 2 days after a blizzard when the mail person didn't make it up our street Saturday or today.  So who walked up to my door and placed this card in my mailbox?

This seems to be the same scam reported under another toll-free number. The contents are worth far less than the $50 claimed value. This is just a lure to trick you into receiving additional "valuable jewelry items" on approval. Of course you have insufficient time to review and accept or return the worthless items before they bill you and you have to pay the return postage. Just toss the card in the recycle bin.
