This number used to be the number to call for early contract renewal with Verizon.  Verizon must've abandoned it at some point and a scammer now has it.  I received a phishing e-mail that appeared to come from Verizon stating that I could lower my monthly bill $20 just by calling the number.  It seemed too good to be true so I double-checked it with customer service at Verizon and they confirmed that it's a scam and that this 800 number does not reach them any more.

I called it from an email I received from Verizon  (was leery knowing it would be a sales gimic but was feeling brave and did it anyhow!). If I was using anywhere near the gb's I pay for with verizon I'm sure it would have been an up sell.... but I don't ....so they didn't ....and now I will save $20 per month /$240 over the next year. Amazing when something nice actually happens (kinda offsets the other 50 crappy things that are going on in my life..haha). Ps...they sent me a follow up email confirming no changes to my service / no extension of my contract and the revised bill for next month $20 less than I am paying.

It's legit.  I called 611 from my cell and the guy confirmed that it is an email from Verizon, and he gave me the $20 off per month starting on my next bill cycle.

I just called Verizon directly and also received a $20 reduction with no extension to contract term.  I think it is a defensive measure against lower pricing and buyout offers from competitors.
