They called home, I wasn't available so they left the 1-800-508-5476 number for me to call back.. When I called they said it was ACS from Wachovia Student Loan Services and that they needed my social security number, Name and Address...  I hung up after that.  If they have my number, how come they don't have my name and social security number?

They are a real collection agency who work with EdFund and other student loan programs. They use social security number for verification.

    No personal info
OK Dan even if this is a real collection agency collecting on student loans, no one in their right mind is going to give out personal info such as SS number to a company they dont know. Why do these agencies call and call and never send anything in writing? Is our govt that stupid? (OK retract that question I already know they are). Anyone who has any smarts knows that if it is not in writing it doesnt mean anything!!! If someone owes a debt send them proof in writing and demand payment or you will sue. If not shut up because most people are not stupid enough to accept a phone demand for payment. There are still careers for ex-collectors such as bowling alley pin technican or fast food worker. Beats prison doesnt it? Or suicide is always an option for you. Good luck D-head!!!

These people keep calling my home phone, but i never pick up because im not home. the message is quite stractched up i cant tell what is happening in the background but maybe its to throw us off. If these people were legit, and more professional, there wouldnt be minor errors like this. We can know that these are people that are totally fake and that we shouldnt give anything to them. I just wish i knew a way to get them to stop calling me.

I agree w/Dave. I just received a call from this number and there was alot of noise in the background (you know when you're on a cell phone and you have the windows down... blowing in the wind bit).Left little detail about what the call was about. But if they were ACS I'm pretty sure with all of the money they are collecting, they would have a BETTER phone system.. yikes... I rather have something in writing than to just "donate" my SS# to a stranger making a random call for kicks..

These folks keep calling at all hours of the day and into the night.  Yes, I have a student loan which currently is behind, and have told them several times that I am currently working temporary and very part time only - that can change any day.

I am making just enough to cover my other bills, while sharing a house with my parents. I have paid almost every month on the loan, just not the amount they want from me.

I have also requested that they contact me in writing only, which they have refused to do.

Unfortunately we don't have caller ID. I hang up on them - when I am working full time or more hours, I will send them more money.

I feel sorry for people who can only find work with such companies. The scripts they must read are laughable - if it's obvious that I'm only paying so much a month, why in the world would you ask me if I'm can pay the entire amount I am behind right now?

Dave, I hate to tell you that those people are in fact legit. My girlfriend is also behind in her student loans. About the scratchy automated messages, it has nothing to do with LEGIT, it just has to do with VERY POOR quality service and it is an embarrassment to any business not to be able to fix that problem. In my opinion, it shows that they just plain do NOT CARE about themselves and their reputation. Which brings me to my next point; why do they NOT know your social security #?, and this goes for you Dan, they do not want the social security # for verification of anything....they want it so that they can report you to the credit Bureau. The people that have your student loan does have your social security # but they do not supply that information to those 3rd party companies that they hire to collect or harass you because they do not have a trust relationship to that point, they are just some call centers that are paid to make harassing phone calls and hope to make you pay you debt. Those people may even be call centers in other countries. NO, and HELL NO, they are not going to be trusted with social security #s by the credit holders and non of you better give them ANY information that they don't already have. "IF THEY DON'T HAVE IT, YOU BETTER NOT GIVE IT TO THEM". That includes your employer name and work phone #, they will harass you at work, hoping to make you uncomfortable enough to pay. But those collection companies are able to report you to credit bureaus and after that you would have to PAY THEM in order to clear your name. They give themselves a long term investment this way. But they cannot do this if they don't have certain basic information about you, such as; Social Security #, Date of Birth, first name, middle initial, last name, and probably other stuff. But keep in mind, "IF THEY DO NOT HAVE ANY PART OF YOUR INFORMATION, YOU BETTER NOT GIVE IT TO THEM" regardless of what threats they make.
This is for Theresa, they don't give a crap weather you eat or not, you pay them first and then if their is any money left, you can eat. The idea is that you must take control, as far as YOU are concern, first you take care of your basic needs and if there is money left, then they get what you can afford. I am not saying to screw those nice folks that lent you the money when you needed it for your schooling, but it you got to the point that you are in financial trouble and are having to default in your student loan, then you have to set your survival priorities. And HELL NO, do not give any collection agency any information that they do not have about you. You have to be firm, tell them that you will pay what you can when you can and you will not give them any personal information, then hang up, YOU ARE IN CONTROL, not them. Keep it that way.

Harassed caller replies to Heck NO.
2nd scratchy message left on answering machine.  I never answer any no caller id calls.  1st time I couldn't even understand the message, since it was so scratchy.  I suspected it had to do with student loan, since I keep getting mail from ACS for my brother.  He is in prison and will be for at least another ten years. He never lived here, but I had mail forwarded here after he was arrested a few years ago.  I have sent every one of the letters back with his current address (prison) and the fact that they can not call him.  I have a preprinted sticker that I put on the letters now after hand writing so many.  Cannot add to caller blocking since it is a privately held number.  I just ignore them.

Yes I also get the scratch calls, NO, they don't follow the law on what time they can all and yes, I'm behind on my school loans because I am not fully and legally disabled. Correct Heck No, they care less, despite proving requested paperwork to the US Dept of Educ, original loan provider, they simply sold my loans to a company Brazos I think it was called who then were supposedly hacked and lost all 'customer' info including SSN, etc, receivd a letter to flag my credit reports in case of identity theft. Was the debt once again sold because then it was AES trying to collect. Now I get calls from this hack company.
So try what I do on a bad day, answer but let loose a string on totally non pc language. Use your imagination.

ACS is a legitimate company who handles student loans. I obtained a Parent's (PLUS) Student Loan a few years ago and they have handled my account since. They have called me when I have been behind on my payments but they have always agreed to work with me (exceptionally so). If they ask for your social security number, only offer them the last 4 digits. They are not a collection agency, they handle student loans that were issued by them as well as others. Yes, I agree that some of their recorded messages are somewhat unclear. For anyone having difficulty making your minimum payments, I would suggest you answer their call and work with them to make payment arrangements. I think you'll find they are not so difficult.

These people have called numerous times, and then they finally left a vague message to call Education Services. That's when I figured out it was about my student loan. I called them, and in less than 5 minutes I had a forbearance applied to my account. They were perfectly pleasant, the only annoying thing about the call was the elevator music I had to listen to while I waited. (Stevie Wonder, ugh)

Never EVER give you Social Security number out over the phone!  Especially to someone whom you don't know working for a firm you have never done business with.  This is likely an identify SCAM.  If this were about your loan then they would request your load ID number.

Having your name and your social security number, they are 2/3rds of the way to being able to steal your identity.  The only missing element is your birthdate.
