These people called several weeks ago, and then again today, asking for employment verification on one of our employees. We gave them basic information the first time. The employee said she was also contacted, and they tried to get more personnal information from her, and also sounded like they wanted to sell her something.

These people called several weeks ago, and then again today, asking for an individual who do not reside at my address.  They stated that they have important financial information for the person they werer asking for. When they called sever weeks ago they spoke to my daughter and she told them that the person does not live there but they still left a telephone number to have the person call them back. It seems to me like a collection agency trying to locate someone who may have resided at my current address.  I chose to ignore them when they first called and I will be ignoring them now.

"Progressive" left a voice mail two days ago and then called again tonight. They wanted me to give them the last 4 digits of my SSN and my birthdate to prove to them that I was not the person that owned them $14,000 for a school loan. I wouldn't give them any information and asked them to tell me the numbers they had in their system, but they said they weren't allowed to give out that information. They were trying to convince me that their data was correct because my name and phone number matched what they had in their system. I just laughed at them and told them to call the credit reporting agency to verify their info. At one point, one of them did tell me that the birth year they had on file was 1961 - not even close.

Annoying messages directed to unspecified person. Sounds like they are fishing for the next victim and calling all numbers in yellow book. Obvious phone scam that should be reported to authorities.

"Progressive Financial" personnel keep calling and leaving a message for a person whose name I do not know. I ignored their calls to date. I downloaded call block software to my cell, but they change phone numbers and I need to keep editing the blocked call list. This is a scam; do not call them back! I will be finding out how to report them to authorities.

I received a call from Ms Vickers that is very very unpolite and does not know how to talk to people. I know that I need to pay my loan but she was very unprofessional, she went from needing to pay my student loan to I see hear that you need to pay $5,000 to another company and you need to get caught up on that too. Ms Vickers stated that your taxes are being intercepted and just consider your loan being paid and then she stated you are going to have to figure out how you are going get caught up on your other bills that I see here. She also said that I should try to get friends and family together to come up with $2,800 to pay off the loan.

This company MUST be on crack! They called me 3 times today, telling me I have a student loan out there "UNPAID" Hahahahaha, I'm a 53 yr. old disabled WIDOW woman, who is not by any means DUMB! When they called the 3rd. time, my caller ID had the # so I called them back 8 times & asked how they like it! They are rude, ohhhh sooooooo very unprofessional to say the least. I also scared the bagebees out of them when I told Miss little smart azzzzzz (AKA Miss Kobb) that I was recording the call. They need to find a New line of work!

A few weeks ago my mother received a letter from these people informing her of some student loan she supposedly had taken out thirty years ago (my mother is fifty-two). My mother never remembers having taken out any kind of loan while in school. She naturally dismissed the letter as a scam. A month later, she received another letter, with the balance shot up from $150 to over $1000, plus some incredibly rude, disgusting shrew of a woman dared call my mother at her place of work. When one of my mother's co-workers, sick and tired of fielding this freakish creature's phonecalls, said to the scam artist that my mother was "not there" anymore and that she had been "fired," the little con-woman replied with, "Good!" Strange... wouldn't a so-called debt collector *want* the debtor to keep working so they can pay?

My mother's situation seems to mirror Karen's on top. It seems they are phishing for some kind of information, and probably got ahold of details about people born in the same year as Karen and my mother.

I am reporting these people to any and all authorities who will listen, and I suggest anyone else here does the same. Put these filthy rats in jail or back on the street, where they deserve to be.

I am also receiving daily calls from these people regarding an outstanding balance they say my husband has from college 13 years ago.  My husband attended this school 5 years before he and I even met!  I have told them to not call me, as the debt is not mine, but they try to assert that they can call me all they want because it is my husband's debt.  I don't even know how they got my CELL PHONE number!  To date, I am the only person they have contacted on this matter...they have not even attempted to contact my husband!  The insist on harassing me!  They keep trying to get me to give them information on my husband, but I simply repeat my assertion that they leave me alone.  They called me twice today!  The second time they called (which was after I sent them an email telling them to cease calling me and noting all of the federal and state laws they were in violation of for harassing me), they had some guy with a intimidating deep voice call, and this guy would barely let me get a word in.

And get this...in the state of Texas, 3rd party collectors are required to maintain a surety bond with the Secretary of State in order to legally pursue collections in the state.  I looked Progressive up, and their bond was expired/canceled 2 1/2 months ago!  I pointed this out to the second guy who called, he just called me crazy.

I have proceeded to file complaints with the FTC and my local attorney general.  I also have notified the Secretary of State that these folks are trying to collect in Texas without a bond, which is in violation of Texas law.  I have contacted a local advocacy group to see if I can get information about suing these people for violations of the law and harassment.  They really messed with the wrong person, this time!

I work for progressive, so,  take it for what its worth.
The organization is a debt collection agency for the US Dept of Education, Dept of Treasury and some Utilities, state agencies etc  (http://www.progressivefinancial.com/AboutUs/AboutUs.htm) .  The US Government and Clients provide numbers as well as whatever is "skip traced" by collectors.  In the case of the Dept of Education debts, your being called because your in FEDERAL DEFAULT ( http://www.nslp.org/vnews/display.v/SEC/Federal%20Default%20Fee ) and you have incurred the penalties, interest, fees etc associated with that.  This is not a short process and is why the debts are old, they have been trying to contact you for YEARS!  That is also why they call your neighbors, friends, family, jobs, acquaintances, references and anyone else that has info  (It's assumed all info is bad to start so they call everything).  They already have date of birth and social security, and quite possibly already have your bank and your job info etc before your contacted.   They are trying to use mediation set up voluntary payment utilizing Dept of Education programs BEFORE they recommend involuntary garnishments, federal offsets of taxes/rebates/stimulus, litigation, etc and whatever else the government wants to do to force action to recover the money that was loaned.  On a side note, I've seen many folks that have already been garnished/federally offset when called, its nothing to do with Progressive.   It was already done, the SSN was already attached and processed before progressive got the account in all likelihood.   The Dept of Education loan rehabilitation program is legit, you pay 9 monthly payments without skipping and your out of federal default and then dept of education re-does your loan x-amount of years.  your also given opportunities to settle, make payments etc.    Hope this helps someone in some way.

This company called my neighbor stating that I had used them as a reference. Harrassment has been taken to a new level! Are large companies & gov't agencies so hard up for $ that they would agree to harrass innocent people such as my neighbor? It's nothing short of cold, dehumanizing evil! To make things worse, they haven't contacted ME about any loan & I have no clue the origination or how to fight.  I hope everyone from the company personnel responsible for hiring these fools to the scum that work for Progressive (& then can sleep at night!) find everything that Karma brings!

So how do you explain all the "mistaken" calls and correspondence? I have now received at least one call (Caller ID blocked--I only answered once) and letters from this company asking for someone who does not live here and never has and I have no idea who they are. According to the correspondence, the person they want to speak to owes money to a payday loan company. To clarify my position:

    A) I don't have and have never had a payday loan.

    B) Don't even recognize the name of the business.

    C) Obviously they don't just represent the Dept of Education.

And as for the supposed solution--There is absolutely no way they are getting my SS# or my name as I have no intention of them attaching my name to this account.

And WRONG   ..... Recipients of these harassing calls are NOT in any default, nor have incurred penalties, etc. WE ARE SPAMMED by unscrupulous companies CALLING WRONG NUMBERS which have NO CONNECTION WHATSOEVER to the supposed intended person you try to convince yourself owns that phone number.

"This is not a short process and is why the debts are old, they have been trying to contact you for YEARS!"

Try, THEY WILL KEEP HARASSING YOU FOR YEARS, even if you have never been in any sort of debt, never taken out any sort of loan, have clean, excellent, accurate credit reports, and maintained the same phone number for over a decade.

"They already have date of birth and social security, and quite possibly already have your bank and your job info etc before your contacted."

Uh, hardly. They can't even get a correct phone number, so instead pay employees to harass innocent parties who happen to have working phones.

"your also given opportunities to settle, make payments etc."

How about YOU'RE given NO opportunity to STOP companies like yours from refusing to accept that YOU ARE CALLING A NUMBER WHICH DOES NOT BELONG TO WHOMEVER THE BLANK IT IS THAT YOU CLAIM IS IN DEBT

I have been receiving calls from these parasites for 2 months now, re: past due child support. When I contacted my ex, she stated that she has not received any $ from these creeps. Even after you make an arrangement, they continue to call and BS you, using intimidation and fear tactics on you. I called the 1-800-510-2813 number and it the same message as
the 1-800-565-3931 number. These guys are slick and when I questioned them re: my CS case, they had my money posted as payments made, but my EX still has not received a penny.

Former student with no student loan
I received a call from this company today.  I thought it was Progressive Insurance at first but when I listened to the message it sounded like the usual collection agency mumbo jumbo.  I called the number the rep left and the moment someone answered they said, "Progressive Financial Services, what is your social security number?"  EXCUSE ME?!!  How is that a way to answer a phone?!  I told them I did not wish to disclose that information and was returning a call from one of their reps.  They again asked for the social and I told them that it is not appropriate to ask a person to disclose their social security number in such a manner, that can lead to identity theft.  I said I was simply returning a voicemail and would like to be put through to the particular extension the rep left.  I was finally put thru after three more attempts to get my social and more personal information (none of which I disclosed).  I told the rep that I believe their company is a scam and to not contact me by phone any longer, for them to use whatever information they already have on me and send me everything in writing.  They told me they were indeed not a scam, consistently tried to get me to "verify" information by saying, "Tell us your address, phone number," etc. instead of them telling me first what they had on file.  I told them, "I hope you're recording this because I want it on the record that you are not to contact me by phone, everything must be in writing."  They said they sent three letters, none of which I received, and that the debt was for an "N" student loan for books from 1999 - I never heard of an "N" student loan, but better than that, I graduated with no loans in the 1980s and haven't been near a college since!!  Unbelievable.
