NCO Financial changed it's name to Synchrony Bank after The Department of Justice and the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau fined them $3.5 million plus refunds of $32 million and an additional $11 million.

same as John. They have no record state says I am owed $1.25 with an address of a place I applied to live but backed out. Now since they own old Mervyns and JC Penney accts they said I've initiated contact and the debt is revalidated.

Got to a voice message telling me to send my dispute to:

This number appeared on a check issued to me by Synchrony bank 1-17-19 and drawn on Wells Fargo. The info for the check indicated “refund due to error on acct # ——. Research shows these checks are IAW a class action lawsuit??

    Any info would be appreciated.

No call but received two letters from Synchrony Bank saying credits were being made to my Walmart Core card. Whatever that is. Listing the last 4 digits of a card I don't have. I call the number listed in this thread to see what's up and it says this is an attempt to collect a debt.

Received a 1099C from Synchrony Bank. Called the number on the letter and it’s a damn collection agency.  I don’t owe anyone anything and they are a fraud.  Will be reporting them to the BBB as well as starting a dispute with the IRS

    A 1099C is a "Debt Cancellation".  https://www.irs.gov/forms-pubs/about-form-1099-c

What does it mean when you get a 1099 C?
    Cancellation of Debt
According to the IRS, nearly any debt you owe that is canceled, forgiven or discharged becomes taxable income to you. You'll receive a Form 1099-C, "Cancellation of Debt," from the lender that forgave the debt.

You would only want to dispute it with the IRS if it is a substantial amount you are being taxed for incorrectly.  It would also be pointless to complain to the BBB as there is nothing they could do about it anyway.

Yep, let's report them to the most worthless, toothless agency on the planet.  The one with absolutely no law enforcement powers.  The IRS is the way to go and then you should also sue them.

Got a 1099-c with a strange card number for $836. Have no clue. Not listed in my Credit monitoring service. No previous contact about it but is from Synchrony Bank. Started a case with Credit Monitoring service to hopefully resolve and possibly sue for unfair business practices.

Well that isn't going to help you with the IRS.  As far as suing, unless they also happen to have an attorney in their organization you will have to find one yourself.

For future readers, the post by "Slim" is not correct.  NCO Financial is still NCO Financial.  Synchrony Bank came into existence because GE got rid of it money lending operation and not because of some lawsuit by the CFPB.

No call received but I did receive a 1099-C from Synchrony Bank for $8,000. I called the number on the letter and the collection agency told me the debt was from 2005 and two payment were made 1.) 2006  2.) 2007.  I am pretty responsible and I pay my debts.  I did have my credit stolen during that time and worked with a company to remove fraudulent accounts and activity. So I checked my bank records and credit report I can't place this account anywhere.  I will be calling the IRS fraud department on Monday to report them.

Same thing with me. Did you give them personal info? Did they steal your identity? I'm freaked now.
