- KAY| 14 repliesGot a call from this number 1-800-555-4477 with caller ID showing "US Government" and they said they are from IRS and I own back taxes. I should pay $1986 immediately and warrant is against and if I don't comply I will get arrested in next 30 minutes. The officer provided her name was Sandra Johnson with badge ID #3138. She said there was USFed#5769001 got created on me and I should act based on my next phone call to pay the back taxes. The agent took my cell number and told that I will get the call from an 800 number and I subsequently got the call from 1-800-829-1954 which is listed as a proper IRS number when I searched. So I thought it is not a scam and started listening to the agent. This guy said his name is agent Sean Marshall with badge ID #3962 and I should not hang up the call and the everything is record. If I hung up then the warrant gets activated and I will get arrested. The said they can accept only CASH and not direct debit, Check or Certified Check. They instructed me to get permission from my superior to go out and get to the bank to withdraw the money and act according to their instructions. I got suspicious right from the beginning but they were not allowing to me to talk to any one and any body. So I ended up going to the bank and did NOT withdraw the money. Somehow made up a story of some other emergency to that guy and put the phone on hold and called another source to check out to confirm if this is outright scam. Got some confirmation that it should be a scam, I decided to go to the nearest police station to confirm if there are any arrest warrants on me. Before entering the police station the 1-800 call got disconnected and got a call with the caller id of "911" and scared to death that it is all real. The guy who talked in that line was saying he is State police he has orders to arrest me, because I was goofing around and not listening to them by withdrawing the money and pay the back taxes. I told him that I am in front of a police station and explaining the whole situation to him and said that everyone will think this is a scam and might want to verify the legality of this. He started scolding me that I did a big mistake by not obeying them and I have decided this has gone too far and entered the police station and handed over the phone call to a sergeant there. Before she started talking, the caller disconnected the phone. I explained the whole situation to them and they told it is a big scam and good that I did not withdraw or pay money to them. They also checked that I don't have any pending arrest warrant against me and I should not worry for this. They also told me that, only when we make calls for emergency we call '911' but when a call comes back from the cops it won't show '911' and it will show only the local police number, which is a big take away for me.
These scam people have become so sophisticated with their technique and also have the ability to well orchestrate a do or die situation. The hold the person on phone and not allowing them to do any background research. The ability for them to call us with a caller id matching IRS numbers as well as "911" made me to believe they are telling the truth. However at the end, I got saved by not following their instructions till the end and also going to the Police Station to get peace of mind. Please be award of such scam as this is a tax season and these scam people can rip you off easily.- Call type: Prank

He said I have been paying my taxes but I owe federal tax of $20081. When I said let me call you back and can I have a number. My husband takes care of the taxes let me check with him. He started shouting on me. We don't have that much time for you to call us back. I asked him do you expect me to pay the money on phone?. I requested him to mail the paperwork for me to look into it.
Luckily received a call from hubby and he asked me to disconnect. I disconnected and received 5 calls but did not pick up. Meanwhile I looked online and came across the above. Such people should be caught so that they don't dupe innocent people- Caller: not known

I’m an Enrolled Agent with the IRS (Inactive). IRS does not initiate contacts by phone. US mail only. IRS does not file lawsuits. Court action, if any is handled by the DOJ and all parties are entitled to legal assistance if it is a criminal matter. But--tax disputes are for the most part civil matters. 90% of all IRS tax disputes are settled administratively. IRS has absolutely no authority to call on local law enforcement for anything. Local law is never involved in IRS tax disputes. IRS does not threaten to involve local law enforcement or to arrest you for nonpayment of federal taxes. IRS has no powers of arrest. If LE is necessary, US Marshals do the job. IRS does not cold call anyone and demand immediate payment of money. IRS does not ask for financial information over the phone. IRS does not accept Green card money paks for payment in any case. No one is prosecuted for ordinary tax disputes. IRS has absolutely no authority over anyone's professional license. Professional licensing is handled by state governments. Yes, levies on property to satisfy an existing tax obligation do occur, but only after a very long period of negotiation. And yes, liens are placed on individuals but usually after a lot of negotiation and a failure to reach a settlement. All determinations of tax liability are subject to appeals. All contacts by the IRS are initiated by US mail.
. - ram| 5 repliesI had the same experience as described by Sharat above - I said why did I not receive any emails or postal mails from IRS and I am getting this call. I took my landline and called 911 and they said that there are scamsters out there doing this. Be very careful - the first call that comes is from "911" -- and when the cops call your cell they never call from 911 - it is always your local #

- Ravendra| 4 repliesI too got same call this morning. They scared the hell out of me. First call was from 911, caller said, he is calling from State police department and has a arrest warrant for me because I did not pay my taxes properly. He then said someone from IRS will call me to explain the violation of tax and violation of tax by deception imposed on me. Within a second, there was a call from 800-555-4477, and she introduced her as IRS Officer, Jesica Brown, Badge # 1407. She started explaining me about tax violation and recommended to resolve the matter over phone. I felt suspicious as usually IRS don't call, rather they would send mail or some communication. I Instantly said that I'll talk to my attorney first before jumping into any decision, hearing this word, she distressed and said that you want to be arrested. I told her that I don't trust you and there is not a single reason to believe in your words. She said, you'll be arrested soon and disconnected the call. After searching on internet, it's confirmed that it was a scam call. God, they really scared me. Guys, Please be aware of such calls.
