I got a call today claiming to be from American Express stating that I need to call them at 800-678-0738 and have my card ready.  The first thing I noticed on the voice mail was someone talking in the background followed by an old pre recorded message which was cut off by a the new message.  This told me that some idiot was maually dialing my phone number and starting a pre-recorded message when he got past my out going message.  The second thing that made this stand out as a scam is the simple fact that I do not have an American Express Card!  I guess some people fall for this scam anyway, otherwise they would not be wasting their time doing it.  Beware of call from a phone number originating from: 954-503-1800 wanting you to call 800-678-0738

I got one today. Same exact story. My recording even had a little "chuckle" in the message. Anyone that calls the 800 number and gives out their credit card information has got to be pretty dense.

Got a message on my home phone today from someone claiming to be AMEX, call came from 954-503-1800. Message was to call 800-678-0738 with my card handy, the message didn't sound right, feels like a scam there are lots of postings about both these numbers.

I have an AMEX card but am in good standing so no reason to call me.

    Be careful with this one.

Got a call claiming to be American Express asking to call back with my card number at 1-800-678-0738.  First thing they ask for on the voice response was my card number.  After hitting "0", they asked for my card number again.  Again, I hit "0" and finally got an operator asking for my name and address information.

In September 2008 I received a voice message from this phone number.  They said they were from American Express and said it was "very important" that I call them immediately at the 800-678-0738 phone number and have my account information ready.  All my financial accounts were up to date, but I called the customer service number I have from my real American Express account (not this fake 1-800-678-0738) and verified that they were not attempting to contact me and confirmed my account was fine.  Do not call that 800-678-0738 number.  Some people are real scum.

I thought this was a scam as well. When this ignorant sounding man called me it sounded fishy. I had them stop payment on AMEX. I won't get into the details but I did call and asked them if this was a scam. Apparently this is the department that calls to follow up with issues like the one I had. I think this division has not so bright people working for them.anyway, called american express and the phone number is not a scam.

I got the same message from 800-678-0738 today.  He sounded unprofessional.  He told me to have my AX card number ready when I call back.  He sounded fishy.  I've never had a customer call from AX to ask me to MAKE SURE I have my card ready when I call back.

Got a call from 1-954-308-5595: The guy had an indian accent, like if the indian accent means that the call is legitimate and professional! LOL!
    1) I did not answer, because I dont know who is calling.
    2) The message that he left was: THIS IS AMERICAN EXPRESS CALLING ABOUT A VERY IMPORTANT BUSINESS MATTER, YOUR ATTENTION TO THIS MATTER IS URGENTLY NEEDED BY THE END OF THE DAY, PLEASE CALL US AT 1-800-678-0738, AND PLEASE HAVE YOUR AMERICAN EXPRESS ACCOOUNT AVAILABLE WHEN YOU CALL, WE CAN BE REACHED 24 HOURS A DAY, THANK YOU.
    a) To be legitimate, the person leaving a message should leave their name.
    b) They cannot pressure you by saying by the end of the day.
    c) They dont say about "A" VERY IMPORTANT ...
    d) If its is an important business matter there will be a live person speaking NOT a recording.
    e) They will mention which American express card they are calling for, green, blue, gold...
    g) They will mention the last four digits of the card.

For more security I have called American express and I have reported this number and this scam to a Law inforcement agency.

Got same call from a ph# 1-954-804-0329. Same exact Voice mail as the above: THIS IS AMERICAN EXPRESS CALLING ABOUT A VERY IMPORTANT BUSINESS MATTER, YOUR ATTENTION TO THIS MATTER IS URGENTLY NEEDED BY THE END OF THE DAY, PLEASE CALL US AT 1-800-678-0738, AND PLEASE HAVE YOUR AMERICAN EXPRESS ACCOOUNT AVAILABLE WHEN YOU CALL, WE CAN BE REACHED 24 HOURS A DAY, THANK YOU.

I called back and they wanted my AX account number. I told them I don't have it, and they wanted my SS#. I stated what's this matter for? She just stated that they wanted to discuss a business matter. I asked whats the business matter, and she wouldn't go into detailed. I hung up. Called my AX Customer Service Number, on the back of my card and found that its a different number. I don't know, seems like a SCAM to me.

I got the same call on both my home phone numbers, one right after the other.  I called it back and heard the fake recording of the American Express sound then when they asked for the credit card number I just hung up.  Recently I also got calls with a recording of Tony Bennett singing, "I've been terribly alone!" which turns out to be the lyrics from the I Left My Heart in San Francisco song.  The latest call before this AMEX one was of a piano playing some classical horror music "DUM DUM DUM...DUM DUM DUM."  Did any of you have a relative killed by an Indian looking doctor?  Maybe that explains the Indian accent of the Amex caller.

I work for American Express. 1-800-678-0738 is a valid number to the Account Services dept. That is the credit dept. of Amex.

I returned the call to the 800-678-0738 as I knew that it was a scam.  After punching a false Amex number three times I was connected to "Gary Chapman".   We excanged a few "expletives" and I told him to kiss my ***. and promptly hung up.  I called Amex and the lady checked the phone number and said it was not an Amex number.  I checked Dex reverse and found that it is from Florida.  A rule on thumb is just don't talk to anyone you don't know, and never  give out any personal information.  Call the institution.  I contacted the FBI, and was told to contact the FTC which I will do.

I was going to respond about this, but apparently other people already have.  Therefore, I will respond to the commenter named "The Truth".  Mr. The Truth, "YOU LIE".  I called American Express, this morning, about my call.  They do not know that number.  But, their FRAUD DEPT. does now.  When you try to scam someone, at least scam a person that has an Anerican Express card.  I don't.
