I am on the Do Not Call national registry and received a phone call from 1-800-679-0336 (The Dove Foundation) on January 30, 2007 at 2:44 pm on my private unlisted cell phone number. When I asked them why they were calling me even though I was on the Do Not Call list, they said that they are a non-profit foundation so that they are allowed to evade this requirement. They were extremely rude and asked me leading questions about violence and sex on television in order to coerce me to agree to have another company call me and try to sell me a product. I said yes in order to fully verify that the company would indeed immediately and single-mindedly try to sell me their product, which they did when they called. That other company was Feature Films for Families, a business that sells ‘family-friendly’ entertainment. Basically, the Dove Foundation is using its non-profit status to solicit sales for Feature Films for Families, a for-profit organization that sells DVDs and videos. This is little more than a loophole for a company to evade the Do Not Call law and use its non-profit status in order help another company to profit.
You can do three things about this (it took me less than 10 min to do all three):
1) File a complaint with the Attorney General of Michigan (Dove is a Michigan organization based in Grand Rapids)
https://www.ag.state.mi.us/cp_division/w3cp_c01_new.asp2) File a complaint with the FCC
http://www.fcc.gov/cgb/complaints_general.html3) File a complaint with the Do Not Call Registry:
"The National Do Not Call Registry applies to any plan, program, or campaign to sell goods or services through interstate phone calls. This includes telemarketers who solicit consumers, often on behalf of third party sellers."
