I received a suspicious medical letter that urged me to contact "1-800-685-6476" for Healthcare Recoveries' Customer Service. The return address of the letter was sent from the Gibson & Sharps, PSC in Louisville, Kentucky.  This did not match up to the phone number given.  Additionally, the medical claim supposedly filed is not affiliated with my insurance company at all.  I am questioning the validity of this phone number and highly suspect that this is some type of scam used to get personal information.

I got the same letter and called the number after I was told by the Blue Cross legal department that it was legitimate. HRCS asked about a hospital visit I had in 2006 as a way to find out if Blue Cross had to pay for the procedure or in other words charge it as pre-existing say that it was the fault of an employer, my own etc and not cover the cost.

Basically your health insurance company is looking for a way not to provide coverage. Ironically (or not) they asked me about a problem / procedure I didn't have, so they don't even keep accurate records.

Kahizatan---my letter did not mention Gibson & Sharps but was from Louisville. I went ahead and sent a memo to file to my attorney. I didn't have an attorney involved before, but I do now.

I got the same letter.  Actually to my bofriend who didn't even have blue cross blue shield at the time they are saying he used their services.  Leary to call the number due to the increase in scams to collecting any information or money over the phone.

We got the same letter regarding an injury our son suffered last September. Apparently, they are not able to read medical records from BC/BS. The CSR wanted my phone number and wanted to verify how the injury happened. According to the CSR, they are hired by BC/BS to ‘recover’ claims paid if the injury were a result of an accident and can be claimed to another party. I refused to give my phone number as I believe they have no obligation to me and would sell my phone number. Thanks BC/BS for giving my information to your 3rd party affiliate!

I received a similar letter.  Unfortunately, they refer to a test that I had but from the wrong health insurance company.  In addition, they sent the letter to my home address.  BC / BS sends correspondence to me at my Post Office Box.  I suspect it is an identity theft ring.  My identiy was once stolen by a staff member at a hospital.  Anyway, since Gibson & Sharps is not licensed in Pennsylvania, I could care less about them.

I received a letter from Gibson & Sharps, PSC representing Kaiser Permanente about a dr visit that I have an authorized referral to see.  I'm contacting Kaiser but it seems like a scam to me.

Have a letter from Healthcare Recoveries.  Why should I call them even if they are legit.  The claims have been paid by the provider already I've already paid my share.  If the provider had its doubts as to what happened why did they approave it over the phone 3 months before I had the procedure done?

I rec'd. exactly the same letter.  My claim has already been paid by my insurer, this was not an accident.  So what came of your letter f/Healthcare Recoveries?  Did it just go away?

They are legit. I called Blue Cross Blue Shield and was transfered to the Healthcare recoveries dept.
All they wanted to know was if it was caused by a workplace accident. Thery didn't ask me for money.

I don't think they are actually hired by BCBS. I suspect that they found a loophole in HIPAA that allows BCBS to sell contact information that a claim was paid out but not give details of the medical condition. Healthcare Recoveries probably pays BCBS a fee to obtain the list in hopes that they can receive a bounty for any recovered funds. A recovery may not come from the individual, but maybe a insurance payout for workman comp.

It seems similar to 3rd party debt collection efforts.

The wording of the letter is slickly crafted to make you think you need to take action. I'm sure that BCBS verified they are "legit" because Healthcare Recoveries pay a fee and is a customer of BCBS.

The site below will answer all of the questions above. Just hi-it and put it in the address bar at the top of your google page. It will take you to the Arkansas BC/BS site which talks about hiring this company. It IS a legit operation although when I received the same letter, it does look fraud on first blush. It isn't. What this company is hired to do is find out from the patient, you, if there's reasonable cause for BC to have parts or all of your bill paid by another 3rd party. They will still cover your bill in the mean time. You have no responsibility in this after the payment was made by BC. And this will not interfere with your copays!
This is especially true of injuries or accidents that BC paid where possibly someone else injured you. BC will try to get that person's insurance that injured you to repay part of what BC paid out. See how it works?
Anyway, that's all it is. As for getting back to them. I'd say do what you want. No money is gonna come out of your pocket if you do or don't call them back. But, I still would not give them personal info over the phone, BC should be able to give them what they need. Here's the web site. I got 3 letters from Healthcare Recoveries representing Kaiser California North and now another letter from Gibson & Sharps representing Healthcare Recoveries and Kaiser California North, telling me to call the 1(800)418-6966 number.

I was hesitated to call at first reading all the above comments, and moreover my insurance name is Kaiser Permanente Northern California division, not Kaiser California North. But since this last letter is from an attorney company, I'm afraid I would got into some legal mess so I decided to call and see.

I called and entered the event number, then a representative answered ask for my birthday and address. I ask him why he need this personal info as I already give him the event number. He said this is how they verify the record and I can call Kaiser to verify their identity. I got scared from the conversation, since I think if Kaiser give them my record already, why would they need to ask for our personal and medical info again? So I decided to hang up.

Kaiser said they are legit just as many of the above commented. But I wonder if I should call them and give them my birthday and address to start more conversation or I should just ignore the letter again? Would I be bared with any legal matter if I igore them?

This is the way insurance companies try to recoup expenses on health care costs that are the responsiblity of another party. It is completely legit (but check with your insurance company to be sure before you call or respond to them). I got kicked by my neighbor's horse that had gotten loose and came onto my property. I had a large amount of medical bills. I got a letter from a similar law firm or company about recoving the medical bills if they were caused by someone else. I gave them all the information and they got the medical payments back. I got all my out of pocket expenses reimbursed (about $400) and my health insurance company got their money back too (well over $4,000).

This means the person responsible for the medical bills are paying and I didn't even have to hire my own attorney. Plus, I didn't have to get in an argument with my neighbor because it was a third party going after her. If you can verify from your insurance company that they have hired the third party firm or company, I would say give them them information and help them out. It worked well in my situation.

I got a letter also, and i thought that maybe some one was trying to cover there but.I feel that something went wrong in my surgery because while i was under i could hear the nurses talking,I also think because the way the letter was worded with the doctors name and date of surgery that they trying to find out what they feel i know already,The insurance company already knows that my reasons for surgery had nothing to do with any one else.can you give me yr idea on this,if any of you got letters from a lawyer and this letter i would look into it.maybe yr surgery was not what you think,

I pay for my own insurance (Blue Cross Blue Shield of Illinois) and I had surgery over a year ago.  During the past couple months I have repeatedly received letters and phone calls (I don't answer numbers II'm not familiar with) from "Healthcare Recoveries" out of Louisville, KY telling me I need to IMMEDIATELY call them (1-800-696-4573) & provide details of my treatment.  I paid my part over a year ago so who are these people?!  Do I have to call them?!  What are they going to ask me and why is it any of their business in the first place?!  The letters claim they're representing Blue Cross, so I'm worried if I don't respond Blue Cross will drop my coverage.  Please help!!!

They seem to be doing the same thing under a different number: 1-800-696-4573 (check it for yourself). This time ostensibly "representing" BCBS of Texas. In no way do I plan on responding, particularly if, as others posted, they're asking for personal information....why would they possibly want your address if' you've given them their "event number" via a letter they sent you in the mail?.......and why in the world should they need your birthdate (this can do a lot of damage in the wrong hands); your name and the "event" number as well as, perhaps, the date of service (which is printed in the letter), should be sufficient. In the past, I've occasionally received similar requests, but they have always been directly from BCBS and NOT a third party.

I've been with BCBS for almost three years and have had to have two major procedures during this time.  Neither procedure was due to anything other than good 'ole wear and tear on my body but, because of the cost of the procedures (and I'm pretty sure because of the plan-I had Zero out of pocket expenses both times) I too received letters requesting I call in.  I called in the first time and refused to give them any information until they gave me my telephone number and the last four of my ins. ID #.  I then provided my DOB and address for them.  The second time around I knew who they were and why I was receiving the letter so I had not problem talking to them.  ***Fair warning***I do Not work for Healthcare Recoveries or BCBS but I do work for an insurance company which is why I had zero qualms about demanding them giving me partial information before I gave them the information they were asking for verification.  Verification CAN work both ways!

Okay, here is the solution to take care of these annoying ambulance chasers and get them to stop pestering you: You are going to have to talk to them once. Make everything up, names, places, details of the events in question, do not provide one factual statement. After they go chasing down the rabbit hole, they will get the message full on, and will leave you alone.
