I believe this caller have fraudulent intentions.  With the pretense of verifying your account or the information they have on you  they ask for your social security number for a cross check.

if you called this number back you would find that it is TD Bank north collections,it is not fraudulent and federal law requires the verification of the last four of the social.  they never ask for the full number. trust me, i would know.

I agree it's not fraudulent.   I have a loan through TD Bank north and whenever they call leave leave a name and extension number.
To be safe I always call the number I have on file, not the one they leave.  That way I know who I'm calling.

If it's a credit card always call the number on the back of the card to return the call.

I'm on the no call list. They have called my home 5 times in the last 3 days, one was at 9:30 at night. I don't bank with them either. They have no reason to call my home and disturb me. I filled complaints with the Do Not Call Registry.

Again they called my home tonight, after I reported them to the Do Not Call List 5 times. The woman on the phone identified herself from TD Bank North and asked for Walter. I explained that no Walter lives here and that my number is on the Do Not Call List. She said because they are a morgage company that they are exempt from that. I told her that we do not bank with them and to take me off their list. I think it's some type of scam. The people who have responded to this list saying that it's not... Do you bank with them? Do they give you the name of a person you've never heard of? If they did, wouldn't you be wary after 10 phone calls in 4 days? Especially when some of the phone calls are coming after 8pm?

Bank collections do not fall under the statute of the do-not call registry. TD Bank north is a legitimate bank in the US and Canada.
Please do your home work before accusing of fradulent intentions.

They're a real bank, but I don't agree that the calls are legit.  My son got called at our house, though he doesn't live here anymore.  At first, they wouldn't tell me who they were.  Only when I insisted (after several requests on my part) did they "identify" themselves as being from TD Banknorth.  The caller still refused to tell me what the problem was (I'm a joint holder on the account).  My son contacted the bank in person later that day.  They said they never called and that there are no problems with his account.

I get phishing scams all the time (mostly blocked, fortunately) from banks where I've never had accounts and some where I have.  This sounds like a telephone version to me.

I'm suspecting a Phish.  I got a call from someone identifying themselves as TD Banknorth about a collection issue.  The first think they wanted to do was verify my SSN "To make sure I'm the right person".  I told them I was skeptical (since I don't do business with TD Banknorth), and asked for callback info.

They gave me 800-742-2651 and an extension.  I verified that 800-742-2651 was indeed TD Banknorth by a web search, called, and dialed the extension given, got a different voice than the previous caller, and that person verified that they didn't have anything listed under my name.

1-800-742-2651 ext 2169, name Donna, called me at work, I don't bank with them, my husband does and my name is not on the account.  When I tried to return the call all I got was a fast busy signal and then the call disconnected.  VERY disturbing that they call a work number.

    it is fraud
Don't give ANY social security digits out if you suspect foul play. What's wrong with you people advising this poor guy it's not a scam? They called my cell too, and I have no dealings with any TD Bank.

    The Guy
Td Banknorth is usually making these phone calls because you or someone who had an acct left your number. The bank is trying to recover money from an acct, they have privacy laws that restrict them from telling whoever answers the phone the full reason for the call besides a personal business matter with the bank. If you are ever curious or suspicious, take there name and number and call them back. Usaully they are trying to give you a heads up on some important bank info, so don't get all bent out of shape people.

I called this number after I recieved a message on my voicemail. When I called them back they asked for my social security number. I said that I could provide them with the last four digits of number and my name, home address and date of birth. They told me that this is not enough information and that they needed my entire social to verify. That does not sit well with me and if this is indeed TD bank then they have just lost an account.

I do not have ANY accounts at TD Bank. No credit card accounts, no loan accounts, no savings accounts, no checking accounts, nothing, EVER. I got a call yesterday evening telling me it is collections/recovery and gave me a name, extension, etc. I suspected it was a scam, as I do not owe anyone ANYTHING. The number on my caller ID was "unavailable"

I then called TD North's Customer Service line (after much waiting) they informed me this was indeed a scam, and were looking into it.

Bottom line: don't give out any information or social security stuff. Call the bank direct if you've got any account issues, don't call the number back.

I got a call from "out of area" from a TD BankNorth collections rep. I explained I was a bit concerned about security/legitimacy etc, and he gave me a callback number and his direct extension, and said that I could speak with him or to any other rep to make a payment by phone. i called him back, asked HIM to verify the loan acct #, which he did, so I processed the payment through him. Feeling extra paranoid, I then called TD's regular customer service # and received assurance that it was legit, so I am satisfied. It's the collection arm that deals with personal loans, auto loans, and other consumer loan products.

I would also like to point out that everyone I have ever dealt with at TD, whether on the phone or in person, has been exceptionally courteous, patient, accurate, careful, and helpful. True above-and-beyond customer service; and I used to critique customer service organizations for a living. Not only are these guys legit, they are real professionals. If you do get a call from them don't be afraid to put them through their paces--they expect it and are ready to answer all your concerns.
